An eight-year-old boy came into my office the other day. He sat on the examination table while his father waited in an adjacent chair. The boy had a mask on — you know the type, homemade with a cute design on the front. His father had no mask.
The boy had been brought to my office to have his injured ankle evaluated, twisted while playing basketball with his friends in the park. "You can take your mask off if you would like," I told the boy. He glanced over at his unmasked father. "It's okay, son, you can take it off," said the boy's father.
I made a trip recently to Cleveland, TN, and made a stop in a Target store for a couple of items. Everyone in the store was wearing a mask. I let my bandana slip onto my neck once I was past the Door Monitor, and a maskless older gentleman came up to me and said: "At least there are two of us here that aren't sheep."

People are past the point of getting comfortable with fear. Now they are addicted to it. Its like a Linus security blanket.

#1, I understand your point completely but I also want to point out to you that there are people who are "high risk" or "at risk" and discounting them is not smart. After all, people with serious medical conditions are the ones coming down with the COVID.

Wish my old church didn't put fear over faith. They keep doubling down on the protocols™.

The good doctor is right. "Consider just this: adults across this country have caused a lot of unnecessary harm to their children during the pandemic. We have taught them to be afraid; we have indicated that they should not question authority; we have shown them how to be obedient to the government. We have suggested to them that any sacrifice in the name of community health is acceptable. We have even modeled a path forward — the easiest way to get along is to go along, to shut up and obey." Just like that old song "The Hokey Pokey," that is what it is all about.

The high risk or at risk folk can wear a mask if it makes them feel better. If your mask prevents covid from flowing out then it should also keep the virus from flowing in, and visa versa. There is no need to go after someone not wearing a mask, as long as you are wearing a mask. That is, unless you do not think masks work. If that is the case, why wear one.

Number 3 you are correct, there are high risk people out there. I know some. A friend who is a heart transplant survivor, a neighbor whom we consider family who is a double lung transplant survivor, a sister who has received treatment for stage 3 cancer for the last 12 years (there’s a remarkable story!) and a granddaughter who is medically fragile. All four could be killed by the common cold at vulnerable times in their lives. They have all had to walk in public wearing medical masks to safeguard their health and even stayed home when some particularly contagious bug was a afoot, especially during flu season. That was before Covid. Now everyone else has to wear a mask to protect them. Covid isn’t the only virus out there that is dangerous to them, yet until now all four took their own precautions to stay healthy. Now it is society’s responsibility to keep them alive? Yes, I understand Covid is particularly contagious - but so is the common cold, which is a serious danger to both of the transplant survivors (both on life-long immune-suppressing drugs.)
I don’t know. It seems manipulative and exploitive to me.

#3, if masks work then the people who are high risk and are wearing them are in no danger from others who are not wearing them. The problem is that they don’t work. If they did, the virus would have died out back in April from lack of the hosts they need to survive. Those who are high risk and are terrified of a virus with a 99.6% survival rate should probably just stay home and let the rest of us get on with normal lives.
I’m in the “high risk” group due to my age, but I have no comorbidties and am much more concerned about the dangers of the vaccine than I am about the virus. And I just suffered through two weeks of a sinus infection due to - wait for it - wearing a mask. Even though I only wear one when I am forced to and put it on at the door, then take it off at the door when I leave.

This is really sad. That poor little boy, scared to death of something that is only about as real as the monsters under his bed, and imagining that some damned, useless piece of cloth is a magic talisman which will keep the monsters away.
