The Bureau of Land Management on Friday said it was removing 10 tracts, encompassing nearly 475,000 acres, from its Jan. 6 oil and gas lease sale in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge’s coastal plain.
The federal agency also said it will begin receiving bids for the remaining available tracts on Monday.

President-elect Joe Biden and his nominee for Interior secretary, Rep. Deb Haaland, D-N.M., both oppose oil development in the refuge, although a lease sale could make it harder for them to halt it.

475,000 acres is only 743 square miles - - roughly a 27-mile square - - barely a dot in a state the size of Alaska.

The days of scarce oil are over. The days of growing demand are largely over with the efficiency of use, whether automobiles or other applications. Why drill Alaska when the entire process is made simple in the lower-48 or in foreign countries? The "oil shortage" days are over...and they aren't coming back.

To the average person, 475,000 acres is huge. In Alaska, it's the size of one's backyard.

Lease sales typically include provisions that the lease will be developed within 5 years, or some time frame. Right now, the oil industry is unlikely to make any capital spending for the next several years, so these lease purchases could expire without development due to the world decline in oil usage. We will see. There is a lot of uncertainty in the world today.

#1, agree, and if anyone ever watched "The Last Alaskans" you'd see how remote the Arctic Reserve really is, and how big (roughly the size of the state of South Carolina), so 475,000 acres is not very much in the scope of the Reserve.
#3, because you have to ensure the options are open and available, just in case you need it. Plus, it's good for the State of Alaska economy.
If you remember when Bill Clinton removed a section of Utah that held rich mineral deposits, the price around the world, particularly for his Riady buddy in Indonesia, skyrocketed due to the lack of access to the Utah deposits.

#2 Why would Trump rescind it on Jan 21? National Security concerns on that patch of land.

a big reason to drill new wells in alaska is to keep enough oil flowing through the pipeline. old fields are slowing down and at some point not too far away, there will not be enough flow to keep the pipeline operational. there is a minimum flow required to keep it working. if the pipeline drops below that flow rate it has to be shut down and it's not something that can just be started back up. it will need to be decommissioned.
