Virginia’s special history commission on Wednesday picked Barbara Rose Johns, a lesser-known civil rights pioneer who led an early school desegregation effort, as the figure it wants to send to Washington to replace the state’s current statue of Robert E. Lee in the hallowed halls of the U.S. Capitol. Brushing aside suggestions of founding-era heroes such as James Madison or Patrick Henry, and 20th Century statesman George C. Marshall, the commission said it wanted someone schoolchildren would identify with—and Johns, who was a teen in 1951 led a strike at her Virginia high school to demand facilities like white students had,

Robert E. Lee the best general in American history, noted in the Mexican war and great in the Civil war with limited resources, a gentle man, and a leader of men. Current VA governor, you are nuts.

If you have to explain who and what someone did they are not a hero that should be put on a statue. Everyone knows R.E.L. and what he did, good and bad, he is part of history. Of course the left is always trying to re-write history so to them this makes sense.

If they’re going to remove all references to General Lee, they’ll soon run out of negroes to replace him.

Someone schoolchildren would identify with?
If it’s Virginia, might as well be a gangsta rapper

They need to rename the whole state since it was named after the colonist Queen Elizabeth. How about Utopia?

Take it from someone who knows first-hand, as the Soviet Union conquered and took over countries, they took down and replaced statues, renamed places and streets, forebade the use of the native language, and rewrote the history of each country as quickly as they could. The fact so many are content to watch this in slow motion and just write scathing or clever comments on websites instead of taking to the streets and marching on government/judicial buildings to retake their fraudulently stolen country is a nightmare replayed for those like me who escaped the first one.
Be forewarned...you cannot ride this out until the next stolen election.

Over 50,000 Union and Confederate veterans met at Gettysburg on the 50th anniversary of the battle. The gathering was called The Great Reconciliation. Veterans met again on the 75th. YouTube still has the videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVgIFjwPGrw and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ce5WpM-JMYg
Better view them soon before they're erased from history.

Good deal because, through Barbara Rose Johns' efforts, everyone's lives have been enriched.
Black America has gotten with the program thanks to her.

You can't change history. Virginia was the capital of the Confederacy. And Northam posed in either blackface or wearing KKK garb for his yearbook. Politically Correct whitewashing will have no affect on the truth.

I wonder what our liberal media would say if we started defacing, tearing down or removing statues of MLK JR . After all, he was both a womanizer and and plagiarizer.

Why don't they send a statue of Alfred E Neuman instead since this has turned into a total joke.

I'm a northerner raised in the south. I find the attempts to besmirch great men of the past because they don't match the politically correct sensitivities of today to be a large pile of BS. If you want to put up a civil right leaders statue fine and good. But to slime Robert E Lee is to denigrate a man who was always a gentleman and who eased the way for the south to regain its rights after the Civil War.

Freakin' VIRGINIA does this, claiming rights to what should be in the capital? DC was originally supposed to be on land donated by both Maryland and Virginia. Guess where it is. All on formally Maryland land. Virginia didn't give up a square foot.

Nothing but the best. Does the New Dominion not have a hot social media influencer they could memorialize in bronze? Better still, why not a statue of Ralph Northam, Virginia's very first blackface governor?
