Our hypocritical leaders refuse

Wearing a mask is important. For you and those around you. For elected officials? Not so much. Actually, all the COVID rules are for us, not them. COVID-19, and the accompanying lockdowns, have made it painfully clear: We plebes have to follow the rules; the elites do not. Start with California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who last week groveled for forgiveness after being caught attending a large birthday dinner at The French Laundry restaurant in Napa Valley. When pictures from the event surfaced, the hypocrisy was glaring: The governor was seen with his wife at a large table full of maskless lobbyists, all sitting in close proximity.

First of all, I dont agree that masks are helpful with this virus. The only thing these masks are good for is to show who will comply with an order to wear them & and who won’t. I’m fed up with these face diapers! My hubby got the virus a month ago. Spent a couple days in the hospital. Is doing much better now, but it’s a slow recovery. Did wearing a mask help him? HELL NO!

How much more evidence do we need that the whole thing is fake? If it was even remotely real, those quivering cowards would be sleeping in their masks. As it is, as soon as the cameras are off, so are the masks.

This is why you don’t swallow conspiracy theories whole-cloth without waiting for evidence to be presented. Amazingly, it appears that Trump’s own campaign is now disowning Sidney Powell’s fairly out there claims about German servers and millions of switched votes. And I don’t say that as someone who wouldn’t want to believe it if there was proof, but there was obviously no proof and plenty to the contrary. Here’s the Trump campaign today essentially telling Powell to go jump in a lake, which is probably the most surprising development of the last several months. Well, this is awkward.

Today the latest shutdown order by Governor Tim Walz took effect in Minnesota. COVID cases have been rising across the Upper Midwest, so our “emergency” continues. This time, the shutdown applies to restaurants, bars, gyms and youth sports. Of course, that COVID cases are rising is no mystery, even apart from the fact that vastly expanded testing naturally generates more cases. COVID is a seasonal flu bug. When it declined during the Summer in Northern states, it wasn’t because shutdowns and mask mandates were working. It was because the weather got hot. It was entirely predictable

Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son, tested positive for coronavirus earlier this week, a spokesman confirmed on Friday evening. “Don tested positive at the start of the week and has been quarantining out at his cabin since the result,” the spokesman told CNN. “He’s been completely asymptomatic so far and is following” quarantine guidelines. The diagnosis comes weeks after President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and the president’s son Barron all contracted the illness. The president was briefly hospitalized after his oxygen levels dropped, but returned to the White House to recover.

Noah Rothman’s excellent piece in Commentary, “The Dumbest of Coups,” deserves to be widely read. I’ve been writing about conspiracy theories for a while now — QAnon, the Flat-Earth gang, etc. — and one of the things you quickly learn about conspiracy theories is that every conspiracy theory is, in some part, every other conspiracy theory: They all overlap, in part or entirely. Donald Trump has always been a conspiracy kook — vaccines, 9/11, Obama’s birth certificate, etc. — and he came into the presidency retailing a conspiracy theory: Let’s not forget that he also claimed that the 2016 election was illegitimate

The request comes after a Phase 3 clinical study showed Pfizer’s vaccine to be 95 percent effective in preventing the disease associated with the coronavirus. “Our work to deliver a safe and effective vaccine has never been more urgent, as we continue to see an alarming rise in the number of cases of COVID-19 globally,” Pfizer CEO and chairman Dr. Albert Bourla said in a statement Friday. “Filing in the U.S. represents a critical milestone in our journey to deliver a COVID-19 vaccine to the world

That might be coming in handier for Swan’s sources than for Swan himself in the meltdown over the election. They’re beginning to practice that well-trodden path of the protective leak, hoping to ironically stay afloat while Donald Trump’s ship sinks, especially after yesterday’s Rudy Giuliani-Sidney Powell presser. According to Swan’s sources, even his family wants to distance themselves from it: Most of President Trump’s closest advisers have completely distanced themselves from his legal effort and are avoiding his lawyers to avoid being swept into their courtroom dramas. As Texas shattered a single-day record with 12,000 new coronavirus cases reported, Republican Governor Greg Abbott on Friday ruled out another lockdown and accused local leaders of not enforcing existing restrictions. His rejection of a lockdown comes as other governors across the US take aggressive new steps to curb record-shattering spikes in Covid-19 cases that are pushing hospitals to the limit. Texas is on the verge of surpassing 8000 hospitalised Covid-19 patients for the first time since a deadly summer outbreak, which back then Abbott met with orders that closed bars and limited restaurant occupancy.

On Tuesday, we covered the news of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s edict stating that no more than ten people could gather in private residences for Thanksgiving and the response he received from numerous law enforcement agencies around the state. To put it kindly, none of the police departments or sheriffs were enthusiastic about taking on the job. To put it more bluntly, a lot of them flatly refused, pointing out the impossible scope of even attempting such a task. The Governor was asked about that response in a press conference yesterday and it’s obvious that his famously short temper had gotten the better of him again. (NY Post)

When President Trump refused to concede the election to Joe Biden in the immediate aftermath of Nov. 3, we argued that he had the right to mount legal challenges if he believed there had been irregularities, mistakes, fraud, or all three. Democratic objections and outrage were as hypocritical as they were inevitable, coming as they did from a corps that refused to accept the 2016 election result not for days, weeks, or even months, but for four years. But although fair-minded people know there are legitimate procedures for litigation, and that these should be allowed to play out, there is also wisdom in the phrase, “put up or shut up.”

Cuomo said the sheriffs who have vowed to ignore the mandate he issued last week are “arrogant” and “frightening to democracy,” the Democrat & Chronicle reported. The governor claimed that his executive order is no different than a codified law, and that he issued it in order to force people to stop the “living room spread” of the novel coronavirus.
