The Commission on Presidential Debates announced a major change to the second presidential debate scheduled for Oct. 15: it will take place virtually.“The second presidential debate will take the form of a town meeting, in which the candidates would participate from separate remote locations,” a statement said. The moderator, Steve Scully of C-SPAN, will be located at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County in Miami, Florida, along with participants.“The White House Pool will provide coverage of the second presidential debate,” the statement concluded.

FTA: ~~ "UPDATE II: Instead of debating, the Trump campaign announced they will hold a rally instead.
Bill Stepien, Trump’s campaign manager, said Trump “will have posted multiple negative tests prior to the debate" so there is no reason to hold it virtually."~~

President Trump will debate if the debaters are on the same stage. The TV people are screaming at the Debate Commission: "What the heck are you doing?!!! We TV folks will lose millions!!! Hold a usual debate if the President tests negative!!!"

Trump is giving Biden exactly what he wants....no debate. Biden would rather coast to the finish than risk being asked hard questions from Trump. A rally is worthless. Will only be seen on Fox, watched by all of us who are voting for him already. Why can't Trump and his people understand this?

Maybe it’s an error in judgement, maybe not. It is possible a Trump is holding out for the type of debate HE wants. The fat lady ain’t sung yet.

President Trump is not giving Biden wants, and this decision is no mistake. This decision by the commission is not in President Trump's favor, that's why they want to do it that way.
It would be a nice setup for Biden, who could read answers from a teleprompter, even though he would be given the questions in advance. Also, the democrats were saying that the moderator should have cut off President Trump's microphone when Chris Wallace stepped in to help Biden. This remote setup would be ideal for that. Cutting off President Trump's microphone, while allowing Biden to keep talking just won't do.
I would much rather see a rally, and so would most Americans. We know what the ''debates'' are worth: Nothing! They are not even debates. They are Q & A, with the softball questions going to Biden, and the loaded, lie based, ''gotcha'' questions going to the President.
Good decision President Trump!
MAGA!

The mistake would be for Trump to go through with this virtual sham of a debate. How does it help Trump to have everyone saying he lost the debate after having all questions be loaded against him and be interrupted or cut off every time he tries to get a good answer out while Biden is given ample uninterrupted time to read out his coached answers. The fact is that these debates have morphed into a political commercial for the dirty Dems.

The intent of the change to a virtual format is to give the commission the kill switch to censor the President. He does not play by their rules when it comes to getting out his message and the attempt to gag him is a blatant political scheme. If they try to hold the debate without the President it would be and illegal in-kind contribution to the Biden campaign and violates the rules that both debate participants need to agree to. The President's lawyers should go to court and block any attempt to run a Biden campaign commercial and call it a neutral debate.

THEY hold the power in a virtual debate, can cut him off instantly, control his time. Nope. Same stage, or nothing.

This is one of the best decisions President Trump has made during this election period. He has taken control and doesn't need to participate in these stupid one sided events. This is what his base loves about him.

I noticed something else that would probably flow over from the VP debate to the presidential debates. The candidates’ sitting on chairs behind desks. Would this be done in the presidential debates to give Biden a break?
These things are so one-sided. I’d have opted out from the beginning and let them call me names. Or I’d have had my own town hall with journalists from both sides to ask questions. Assuming that a conservative journalist could be found! :-)

The mistake would be to participate in this charade called a virtual debate. Due to all the publicity, Trump's first post-Covid rally will be a must see event. By the way, why would he care if never Trumpers and the dedicated left don't watch. Also, I doubt anyone that is undecided at this point is actually a likely voter.

Trump ain’t stupid. I am glad he didn’t agree to the changes since they did not ask him what he thought should be done to continue.
It is evident to me that the debate was a set-up to control the outcome. There is no way a question would be asked to show what a wonderful job he is doing.
I have a feeling that the fireworks are about to go off. A lot can happen. Be prepared to be entertained. Who needs a debate?
On a side note, my opinion is that Trump feels that not only have they come after him but that they exposed his loved ones to danger. He won’t allow that to happen. The gloves will come off. He loves his family and America more than his wish to be elected to be our president for 4 more years.

“The White House Pool will provide coverage of the second presidential debate,” the statement concluded.
The same white house pool that has been sandbagging Trump since 2016? Viewers would be watching the debate through a White House pool filter. How biased is that? What happened to general network coverage? None of this even remotely passes the smell test.
If Trump attends, he gets sabotaged from beginning to end, and very likely would be unable to respond. His team would have to adjust to the new circumstances. Not sure they can since nobody has an idea how the debate would actually be run.

#11, do you think people who test negative can spread the virus? How would that happen? And I assume your mother wouldn't be attending the debate. People at risk should take appropriate measures. The rest of us adults should be free to decide for ourselves, also.

What Trump should request is instead of townhall type, they allow questions from each candidate to the other candidate.
No need for any in-person audience, just the two candidate and their immediate handlers.
Joe, it seems, wants to ensure they can manage the questions by using off-site and ability to have the potential answers available quickly to read his response.
The Obama campaign used remote townhall to control the message, and avoid follow up questions. They bragged about it after the election how they fooled people into thinking they had access but it was all show.

Most of the commenters on this post miss the point....Just who the heck does the Presidential Debate Commission think they are to impose new rules on debates midway through? Who are they to tell the President of the US these new debate rules,...take it or leave it?
It is plainly obvious that a "Virtual Debate," with the candidates separated and the moderator at the control table to shut off sound/picture is advantageous to Biden and his supporters, who conduct the debates. It will absolutely hide Biden's mental and physical weaknesses, like the Media his FDR's wheelchair.
This is a stacked deck against Trump, and he should challenge the Debate Commission's authority to unilaterally make changes during the process.

Seriously, how many voters' minds are changed by a debate anyway? Good for Trump. No need to have a "debate" with a Biden-friendly moderator (his former intern) asking questions Biden has been fed in advance, and then having Biden read answers from a teleprompter. And then the media will run stories the next day talking about how well Biden performed during the debate.

The rats are changing the rules to make it even easier for biden to be cued up for his lies and deflections. The President is only enforcing the rules that were agreed to before. After 7 months of China flu protocols, even a High School principal would know how to secure a venue for a debate. The President should also insist on a member of his team frisking biden for a wire this time. It's OK, he would do it in a Hazmat suit to protect elderly Joe.
#11, don't you watch the news? President Trump volunteered to be the highest profile test subject ever of a tested and trusted antibody vaccine. He just SAVED your mother. The best thing that could happen to her to protect her from the China flu would BE a visit from President Trump where he could hand her doctor the antibody vaccine that CURED him in less than 72 hours. You can believe the entire medical staff at Walter Reed hospital or you can continue to get the 'facts' from any of the network news. ALL of which have been caught and proven to be intentionally lying about news reports. But please keep posting here. Sooner or later you will run down a comment and learn the facts of a story months before one of the networks meekly admit they lied.

I hope this contributes to the death of these phony media ambushes against the GOP.
No GOP should agree to any debate that
1) has a moderator.
2) does not have published topics beforehand are that are required to be addressed by all candidates
3) does not have a strict timekeeper
4) does not mute the microphone of the other party during the speaker's allotted time

Trump co-hosting with Rush tomorrow is going to be epic. Just saying, and it will have many more listeners than one of his rallies or town halls, effective as those have been.

#24, Trump has done everything his DOCTORS have said he must and that is one reason he is looking so robust. To say this President has not demonstrated by policies and behavior the utmost care for the American people is just a lie. You want to see untrustworthy and cold hearted, vote for the guy who has to be led around by his wife.
