FORT WORTH, Texas - A former Whataburger employee is filing a discrimination complaint against the fast food company after she says she was told her Black Lives Matter mask was inappropriate for work.
The employee says she’d worn the mask to work before, but she says it didn’t become a problem until a customer complained and threatened to notify corporate.
Makiya Congious says she was told her BLM mask was inappropriate for work after a customer complained at the Whataburger on Brentwood Stair Road in Fort Worth in August.

Sounds as though they were justified in terminating her for more reasons than the mask. Troublemakers show themselves to the door in any company I’ve ever known...

If Congious doesn't like Whataburger's policies, she should start her own company and wear whatever she likes. I wouldn't be optimistic about her chances given her pathetic attitude.

Here's a simple rule that works both for employer and employee.
If the employer wants the employee to wear a rainbow apron [as Kroger has done in some locations], then the employer has opened the floor for political and social statements, and employees should be able to wear MAGA hats, or blm insignia, or anything else they want to.
If the employer has not allowed political / social commentary, then that applies both to the employee and the employer.

Makayi is the kind of person that would object to a MAGA hat, I'll wager.

Her complaint is that because one, count ‘me, one customer complained she was told to take off the blm mask. Isn’t that exactly the same thing that happens when someone wears a MAGA hat and someone complains? Suck it up honey, good for the goose, good for the gander.

#1, she quit. She was not fired. The policy is clear. No slogans of any kind except Whataburger logo. No discrimination. If she sues, she will lose and in a sane world would be forced to pay court costs and legal fees for Whataburger. She in perfectly free to start her own company Black-Lives-Matter Burger and were anything she wants as the uniform.

I will assume since you have filed a lawsuit against Whataburger......you have been fired? Maybe you can wear your BLM marxist hat around your house since you will not be working anymore!

The customer is always right, darlin' and that's how it works in the white world too. Go apply at Starbucks.

I can say this without fear of being wrong If I was a customer and she was wearing a BLM mask I would have walked out without buying a burger.

Stuck on STUPID can't hold a job in the Fast Food Industry. The only career choice left for her is the Community Organizer.

We went there a few days ago to pick up an order from curb-side pickup. The black lady who brought out our order was very polite and was wearing a Whataburger face mask.
My husband and I both wanted one. I still think wearing a mask is stupid, but since you have to at certain places, it would be nice to have a cool one!!!

Undoubtedly there are rules for what sort of masks are acceptable for workers and how they need to be worn. Maybe management at that particular place had given their employees more leeway before, but were put into a position requiring them to enforce the rules?

Keep your politics at home. No one wants so see them or hear about them in a business situation.

I believe that it doesn't matter what kind of mask one wears or whether one is worn at all. The chances of the virus being in a particular fast-food joint in flyover America are infinitesmal. However, political messaging for a terrorist group is not welcome anywhere and can cause a lot of harm.
I took an out-of-town trip yesterday and stopped at a Wendy's that had black workers behind the counter. The order was completely wrong but I walked out shaking my head and ate it anyway. Maybe they have their own word for a "double cheeseburger" these days?

I work retail. I wore a clear face shield for 2 months, Then the corporate gods decided that face shields were not acceptable.
I had to get my homemade facemask approved. (Shh. It doesn't cover my chin.) Political/social statements are not permitted.

I can't post the Star-Telegram front page writeup because of a paywall, but further info from that article is that she asked about quitting and giving 2 weeks notice. She was told she should leave right now and would be paid those two weeks. The ensuing yah-yah resulted in the police being called.
