As perceived security threats mount in Earth's orbit, countries around the world are following the example of the United States and creating their own "space forces."
Nine months ago, in December 2019, the U.S. Space Force was born. The new military branch was created with a focus to protect the nation's satellites and other space assets, which are vital to everything from national security to day-to-day communications.
Now, countries including France, Canada and Japan are following suit, as leaders from those countries' "space force" analogs said Thursday (Sept. 10) during the 2nd Summit for Space Sustainability, an online event hosted by the nonprofit Secure World Foundation.

Why? Doesn't Chelsea Gohd realize all the new positions that will need to be filled, i.e. jobs? And the political appointments that will be available? Favors to be passed out, along with the expectation of them being repaid? A whole new agency to staff and run! When is Lichtenstein going to start their space force? Mali and Grenada could follow soon after.
Now do you understand, Chelsea?

Nothing is ever what they say it is. With video having been released of likely alien ships taken by navy pilots, and all the renewed interest in Roswell and similar happenings, its possible an announcement is forthcoming. That may be why they think we need a space force.

From the very beginning the exploration of space has been militarized. Nazi V1 rockets were the first into space. The space race wasn't some friendly little contest between the US and the Soviet Union. It was all part of the Cold War that could have seen the world nuked several times over. Just like the Air Force used to be part of the army as the Army Air Corps. The Space Force used to be part of the Air Force. We keep becoming more and more dependent on satellites and that makes us more vulnerable to attack not only on those satellites, but direct attack from space.

#2 is probably closer to the truth than all other reasons given. The fact that beings coming to our planet on a regular basis would probably have the technology to wipe out our new military branch in five minutes is conveniently dismissed but we have to start somewhere.

Perhaps they know something that we don’t. Trump doesn’t strike me as a man that would agree to, yet another, bureaucratic, tax-payer funded, government program for nothing.

Simply? The same reason everyone liked Star Trek.
Its nice to dream, and seeking out new things fascinates us. Dems are always to busy scraping together taxpayer money they can steal to buy new votes.

Possibly, a "Race" by various politicians to crowd onto the American First wagon?
I am reminded of a couple of lesson from post-WWII... The English Government was at that point of having spent so much capital; they were running short of funds...They sold to the Russian Govt, 'surplus' Rolls Royce Jet Engines' ,so the The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 could fly.... The Canadians, as well, scrapped what was going to be potentially, a very competitive Aviation Industry, because they too, were seemingly running out of funds.... Short sighted politicians (?) .

I'm looking for a Space Force recruiter. Haven't seen any in uniform, either. Another Pentagon expansion. #1 has it right, but those "benefits" apply to the US as well as anywhere else. Should the USA join the United Earth and the United Federation of Planets? Never to early to consider the future.

If there is a space force, they are probably recruited out of the Airforce and Navy, much as they did for NASA. They would continue serving as officers of their original branches. Support recruits would be filtered through those branches of the military as well. They would be heavily weighted toward the hard sciences in training.

If humanity is to survive as a species, we must head to the stars. Even if we dont kill ourselves, our sun eventually will. The sun will expand into a red giant and consume the inner planets. Thats the practicle reason for a space force. Exploration, colonization, defense from asteroids and a potential hostile alien force.

Go to the moon. (Not Mars just yet)
Get Helium3.
Develop fusion technology.
Develop space travel. A Space Force will be very useful.
