Boeing is seeking to increase black US employees throughout the company by 20 percent and mandate benchmarks for hiring people of color, Chief Executive Dave Calhoun told employees in a memo on Friday reviewed by Reuters. US corporations have become more responsive to complaints related to racial equality following a summer of sweeping anti-racism protests over the slaying of black people by police.(Snip) “We understand we have work to do,” Calhoun said in the memo, which was released on the 57th anniversary of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have a Dream” speech and included references to the police shooting of Jacob Blake

Maybe just hire the best available and let the race thing wither away.
Merit is how race issues dissolve, when an engineer or a wrench turner is hired based on skill the product is improved and jobs flourish.

Racial quotas guarantee more incompetent employees, which lower product quality and increases product cost.
Brilliant move, fool.

Gives me warm and fuzzy chill bumps all over my body to think pilots and mechanics will be chosen on the basis of skin color. What next? Hire people because they can't speak English or because they wanna sleep with little boys? What a great idea! I'll just drive thank you.

There's nothing wrong with affirmative-action programs to rectify past wrongs, which give less skilled and less talented Americans the opportunity to achieve great success and wealth without having to work hard in life. I applaud the NBA for leading the way in this Social Justice fight, and I can't wait for the league to implement hiring programs based on the general population of this country and not on ability. It just isn't fair that impoverished and melanin-deficient ball players have to sit in the stands and not be permitted play on the court just because they don't have the skills.
Consequently, I'm expecting the NBA to hire players, solely based on their skin color. It's time for White players to represent 70 percent of the active players in the NBA and Hispanics to represent 15 percent. After all, Jose and Paco want to play in the big leagues, too!
Hey LeBron, we're all waiting for another one of your elegant and thought-provoking speeches on the subject.

How about just hiring the best and brightest, regardless of color?

So the Big Losers Mob scores a “social justice” hustle on Boeing. Were there in the past so many qualified black people Boeing discriminated against and only now they’re making amends, or will being black be their most important job qualification? It’s a good thing I don’t have to fly anywhere anymore.

Race or gender should not play in hiring someone for a job. It should be the best or the most qualified person is hired. Saying that you are going to hire 20% of a certain race is pure racist. OR is this another affirmative action handout. This needs to stop NOW.

A 20% increase in the current number of black employees. What's the current number? I worked for a company that had a goal of minority employment based on the percentage of minorities in the local workforce. That's an admiral goal and they stated that they've never quite reached their goal because they still only hire people who meet their qualifications. That's to the benefit of any minorities who are hired.

Given Boeing's record of incompetence, maybe, just maybe they should hire COMPETENT employees with Skills, not hiring because of skin color alone! I'm sure lots of Blacks will gladly work there and that's great...but only if fully qualified!

Good luck with that! Try to find that many with a work ethic, likearriving for work on time, not when you feel like it and follow the rules of the work place and actually work. Those quality control inspectors are going to be real busy!

My dad retired from Boeing 40+ years ago. It still built decent planes back the, not so much now. Two years ago, we drove from New Orleans to Yakima, WA because I don't like the treatment and attitude of airline personnel, the dictatorial TSA and the idea of being captive in a long metal tube full of who knows how man sick people. Now I can add affirmative action built planes to the mix. I never thought, as an old AF veteran, that I'd hate the thought of flying. President Trump needs to hang on to the current AF1 as long as he can, even with the AF maintaining it. It should be good for 5 more years.

he should invest the shareholder's money in better education, training and apprentice programs for ALL Americans. Blacks who value opportunity over handouts will take advantage. THEY are the ones you want. Hiring blacks just for the color of their skin and then having them work on building I or my family will fly in is not a comfortable feeling.

It was the white male Engineers who built the company and still keep it going. Boeing's 737MAX problem is due to handing off the system design to India, and we all know how that worked out for them. This corporate "virtue signalling" needs to stop, as the CEO is harming shareholder value by doing such useless stunts. Open the doors and start hiring the BEST qualified Americans to fix your company's pervasive problems there, Dave.

Nothing new. I was laid off from Boeing in 2002 when NASA negotiated a new contract. I was a Principal Engineer, and the new contract called for only one. They laid me off and kept their AA Nigerian. He made principal because he kept accusing everyone else of racism, and management was scared of him. My department had a black boss who was biased, and that is the only reason this Nigerian still had a job, even before the contract ended.

Now every black employee there will be looked at with suspicion. Was he one of the affirmative-action hires that was only hired for the color of his skin, or was he really the best person for the job?!?!?!?
And, yes, there will be lawsuits as more qualified non-blacks are denied employment so that less-qualified blacks can fill these affirmative-action positions.
So Boeing, lets see just how bad you can make race relations. Logic, reason and facts would tell them that. But, as with all lie-beral initiatives, it's not about facts, but about feelings. And this just "feels" like it is the right thing to do!!!

I don't give a rats who builds them as long as they are the best at what they do. I want to fly in a safe airplane, not one built by a "diverse" workforce.
