‘Screw COVID’: 250,000 Bikers to Defy
Common Sense for Nine Days at Sturgis Rally

Original Article

Friday is the official start of the 80th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, where 250,000 people are expected to gather in the South Dakota town of that name for nine days of defying proven precautions against the spread of COVID-19. “Nobody is social distancing and none of them are wearing masks,” local psychologist Michael Fellner told The Daily Beast. “None.” Fellner is originally from Brooklyn in New York City, which was once the nation’s COVID-19 epicenter but has just reported three straight days without a single death from the virus. The transformation is almost certainly the result of the same precautions the bikers in Sturgis are ignoring.

Lazy and fake “journalism”. I was struck by how the author cited a psychologist, not a medical profession but more or less a philosophy, who once lived in Brooklyn as his expert on the wisdom of the convention. Well, today I interviewed a stoic who was born in Vermont, where COVID cases are rare, who believes the maskless Harley convention is just peachy. We should all go out and enjoy our lives.

Hey, Abbott Idiot: We're having a social gathering of more than 10 people, and some of us will NOT be wearing masks or social distancing. Take that and stick it where the sun don't shine!

Riding a motorcycle is inherently dangerous and thousands of people die every year. Freedom is making your own decisions about your life. Your life, your risks. If you chose not to take any risks you won't live your life at all. No statistics need on that one. It's 100% guaranteed.

The Case for Trump 6 replies

Americans who want to remain citizens of a united country that at least makes some desultory attempt to protect them and further their interests have no choice but to stay the course. As the saying goes, the only way out is through. I know that some readers will lament that the Trump Administration has been a disappointment. “Where’s our wall?” I’d like to have seen more progress by now, too. “Why wasn’t he tougher during the riots and their aftermath?” I don’t know. But it does seem clear that a few of the things we thought all along are actually true.

The appointment of Senator Harris as Democratic candidate for vice president is a suitable final step in the increasingly goofy Joe Biden campaign, prior to next week’s virtual Democratic convention. She was a catastrophic candidate for the presidential nomination, starting out as a strong rival to the Marxist senator Bernie Sanders, and like Mr. Biden himself and all the others except Mayor Pete Buttigieg, her candidacy sank like a rock. Almost every policy question was answered with a pious assertion of the need for “a national conversation.”

Word has just reached me of the death of Wilford Brimley, a fine character actor and a friend of liberty. Brimley died Saturday in a St. George, Utah hospital of a kidney ailment. He was 85 and had not worked in films since 2017. The news saddens me as I’ve enjoyed Brimley’s pleasing screen presence over the decades. He specialized in playing cranky but smart characters, often with a soft heart behind the bluster. Readers may recognize the portly guy with the walrus mustache from The China Syndrome, Cocoon, The Natural, Tender Mercies, The Electric Horseman, and Absence of Malice.

Because the coronavirus is still spreading rapidly in much of the country, not every school district can bring children and teachers back safely and equitably this fall. But among those that can is Somerville, Massachusetts—the city of about 80,000 just northwest of Boston where my family and I live. After a biotech conference in late February spread the coronavirus in the Boston area, public officials in Somerville reacted quickly. The city shut down bars and required masks before most other communities did. Residents stayed home. Playgrounds closed. “Avoid playdates,” urged Mayor Joe Curtatone, a progressive who prides himself on making data-driven decisions

For nearly four years, Washington foreign policy experts and Obama administration alumni warned that the Trump administration was jeopardizing any prospects for Middle East peace. By withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal, we were told, the U.S. would alienate itself from its allies. By moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem, it would inflame the anger of millions of Arab Muslims. By recognizing Israeli sovereignty in the Golan Heights, it would estrange the Arab states. By maintaining close relations with the Israeli government, it would imperil the lives of Palestinians.

Joe Biden took his time selecting a running mate, which seemed prudent. But he came up with Sen. Kamala Harris of California, which seems anticlimactic. And, worse than that, weak. Let’s set aside what sort of vice president and president Ms. Harris might make — the campaign will reveal the best and worst of her and voters will decide for themselves. What does it say about Mr. Biden as a leader? It does not say much, or at least much that is good. Mr. Biden started the vice presidential selection process by putting himself in a box. He pandered. He said he would pick a woman.

One of the ringleaders of the Democratic Party’s attempt to destroy Brett Kavanaugh’s life in 2018 has been named Joe Biden’s running mate for the 2020 presidential election. Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., used the Kavanaugh nomination in 2018 as a springboard for her failed presidential campaign. Focusing on her support for abortion and position on the Senate Judiciary Committee that handled the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings, Harris strongly opposed Kavanaugh’s nomination within moments of it being announced, and long before she had a chance to review his record. She joined other Democratic presidential hopefuls on the steps of the Supreme Court the next day

T he New York Times contends that Joe Biden’s vice-presidential pick Kamala Harris is a “pragmatic moderate,” which is either the usual misleading bias or a sign that the Overton Window is about to fall off the edge of the political spectrum. To judge Harris by her own words and deeds is to be confronted by a candidate who is more antagonistic towards the Constitution than perhaps any to appear on a presidential ticket in modern times — and maybe ever. The fact that Harris will say and do anything for power is evident in her very acceptance of Biden’s offer. It’s going to be fascinating to watch Harris explain

It started with a false story on social media about police shooting a black “child.” Within minutes, hundreds of young black men and women filled the streets, targeting businesses along the Magnificent Mile, in River North, and in the Central Business District. This was the scene playing out in Chicago on Sunday, August 9th and continued through the early part of Monday morning. People sat in idling cars as looters calmly brought them merchandise. The thieves cleaned out high-end stores like Gucci, Dior, and Hermes, taking everything, including the mannequins. The Americans who confess other people’s racism absolve themselves inexpensively by a moral mechanism common to humanity: the more I profess to hate evil, the more I showcase my own goodness. (Snip)Today, as in the Middle Ages, the mobs, the fires and desecrations, the ever-present focus on “the Jews!” have nothing to do with any truth or with the details of any particular event or accusation. What sense does it make for a mob in Brussels, Belgium, to tear down a statue of Julius Caesar in protest against four U.S. policemen’s killing of a black man whom they were arresting?

Anthony Williams single-handedly revived Washington, D.C. through strong leadership, pro-business policies, a dedication to better schools and an understanding that he had to get control of crime. Muriel Bower, the current D.C. mayor, is steadily but surely, reversing every one of those accomplishments. She bows to the teachers’ unions and keeps schools closed. She does little to stop the crime spree that is erupting in the city’s toughest neighborhoods. She seems intent on destroying restaurants and other small businesses that made D.C. great again. Bowser isn’t the only weak mayor who is harming our nation’s great cities. Say what you will about Rudy Giuliani, but his toughness led to New York’s revival.

It is no secret but public knowledge that Kamala Harris slept her way up into California political life by being a very public escort and mattress for California Democrat Kingmaker Willie Brown. Willie Brown is 30 years older than Harris and was very married at the time. It was public. It was an embarrassment. With Joe Biden’s photo metaphorically the definition of the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, voters will decide in November whether they want Harris to be their president some time in the next four years. Of almost equally significant concern is what Harris represents to hard-working women across the country who devote years to their careers

President Trump continues to be his own worst enemy: On Thursday, he stooped to calling presumptive vice-presidential nominee Kamala Harris a “mad woman.” That doesn’t promote his agenda. It doesn’t help him with women. It doesn’t shore up his image as worthy of the nation’s highest office. It’s just, as Trump would say, mean and nasty. Sure, Harris isn’t the first target of Trump’s ad hominem attacks or over-the-top language. But making everything personal is unbecoming.
