Save Taiwan

The fate of Hong Kong should make us worried about Taiwan. China’s introduction of a new security law for Hong Kong — which hollowed out the spirit of the ‘one country, two systems’ notion — is a powerful reminder of the importance of sovereignty for the Chinese Communist party. We should ask whether Taiwan is next on the list. In the past few months, as the world battled to control the COVID-19 pandemic, Beijing indulged in increased military activity across the Taiwan Strait.

Face it, war with China is coming. Even if Xi doesn't want it, if he doesn't go to war with the US (or make the US submit) at some point, he will be overthrown by his own generals, who want war. So when do we want to fight? When Taiwan is attacked? Or Pearl Harbor, or Los Angeles? Xi has to be made to realize that we aren't kidding, and we WILL nuke them.

Interesting that they are also using We Can’t Breathe. Not cool when it comes to the USA. Taiwan is not parallel situation to Hong Kong. Everyone knew for a very long time that Hong Kong would be returned to China. The UK did nothing to ensure that China would keep its agreement about autonomy. Taiwan is just a vulnerable little country. Why its being in the useless WHO is important is beyond me. I am not in the mood to go to war over either Hong Kong or Taiwan. I am becoming somewhat of an isolationist. America First.

There is nothing that the UK could do to save Hong Kong, as if they did not turn Hong Kong over to Communist China when the lease ran out, the result would be Communist China militarily invading Hong Kong causing massive casualties. That's in the past. If Biden, a Communist China lover, and whoever Obama picks as Biden's VP are elected, Taiwan will be in mortal danger of a military invasion by Communist China. Its that serious, and what the future may well portend.

Friday is the official start of the 80th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, where 250,000 people are expected to gather in the South Dakota town of that name for nine days of defying proven precautions against the spread of COVID-19. “Nobody is social distancing and none of them are wearing masks,” local psychologist Michael Fellner told The Daily Beast. “None.” Fellner is originally from Brooklyn in New York City, which was once the nation’s COVID-19 epicenter but has just reported three straight days without a single death from the virus. The transformation is almost certainly the result of the same precautions the bikers in Sturgis are ignoring.

The Congo River is a long, arcing river with a basin that spans nine countries in West-Central Africa. This extensive body of water provides food, water, medicine and transport to about 75 million people in the surrounding basin, according to Yale University's Global Forest Atlas. The Congo River zigzags across the equator twice as it flows from eastern Africa, through the Congo rainforest, all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, according to Mongabay, a nonprofit environmental science and conservation news site. From its tributaries to where it meets the Atlantic Ocean, the massive river includes rapids, wetlands, floodplains, lakes and swamps.

About 45,400 new cases were recorded Monday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, the first time since late June with two straight days under 50,000. There were about 47,500 on Sunday. U.S. cases averaged about 60,000 per day in July. The university has recorded 4.718 million U.S. cases since the pandemic began and 155,400 deaths.

In the midst of President Harry Truman’s controversial firing of General Douglas MacArthur during the Korean War, Air Force General George Kenny, who brilliantly led MacArthur’s air force in the Southwest Pacific in World War II, wrote that when the histories of the Korean War are written, they will "add still more to the luster of MacArthur's reputation as a military leader." General Kenny was wrong about historians, who have largely taken Truman’s side in the debate over how to deal with China’s entry into the war. But in a larger geopolitical sense, General Kenny was right. China’s rise in the 21st century

Former President Barack Obama recently spoke at civil rights hero John Lewis’s funeral, and if you read Slate you will learn his eulogy was literally “perfect.” Back in the real world, Obama raised a lot of eyebrows for using a funeral service to deliver a political jeremiad. While Obama previously earned some measure of respect from his political opponents calling out “woke cancel culture,” what Obama said at Lewis’s funeral was a full-on endorsement of exactly the kind of left-wing radicalism that seeks to discredit and bully opponents rather than persuade them. The big news from Obama’s speech was that Obama came out in favor of eliminating the filibuster.

Every July, Jim Koehn used to pack his silver Jeep Liberty with three duffle bags—one each for himself and his two daughters—along with hiking gear and a cooler with drinks and snacks. Koehn ran an events business in Houston, and in midsummer things died down, making it the perfect time for a great American road trip. He’d empty out a coffee can of cash that he’d carefully socked away over the course of the year, counting it to see how many days they could afford to spend on the road. With gas, meals, hotel rooms, and national park entry fees combined, the single dad spent about $200 a day

A consensus has formed about this presidential election: it is Joe Biden’s to lose. As long as his vice-presidential nomination doesn’t backfire, or he does not spectacularly bungle the debates, the soon-to-be-confirmed Democratic nominee will be in the White House by the end of January. Just look at the polls. Well, do look at the polls, and you’ll notice that Biden is losing ground. He’s still ahead, and comfortably, but the race narrowed in July, just as the media started to discuss a Biden presidency as if it were a fait accompli.

When Olivia de Havilland, the grande dame of the Golden Age of Hollywood, died last week at age 104, the tributes and memories for a life well lived poured in. She was the last surviving cast member of the epic Gone with the Wind. She won two Academy Awards. She was romantically pursued by everyone from Jimmy Stewart to Howard Hughes to a young Jack Kennedy. She challenged and helped change punitive film-industry practices toward performers. But one chapter in her life was missing from almost all the tributes. In its 3,000-word obituary the New York Times failed to mention the key role she played

On Aug. 1, 1945, 12-year-old Hideko Sudo went to bed fully clothed and full of worry. For days, air raid alerts had left the coastal city of Toyama on edge, prompting her school's closure. More alarmingly, earlier that day, American planes had rained down leaflets warning of an imminent attack. Hideko's fears proved well-founded. Despite a sophisticated alert system and a decade of air defense drills, the arrival just after midnight of a wave of B-29 bombers plunged Toyama into chaos. Superfortresses — 173 of them — encountered only sparse antiaircraft fire as they released around 1,500 tons of incendiaries onto the city's center.

A few years ago, three things happened in the course of a single week in my life. First, a friend told me about a letter her daughter, then 11, had received from her closest summer-camp friend. The girl had some big news: She was now a boy. Then, another mother told me she and her daughter were sitting at a synagogue lunch when they were joined by a man who “presented” as a woman. And I received a lengthy email from my daughter’s swim coach at the local YWCA—a man whose missives had never included anything besides practice times and requests for volunteer timers—

So far, this year’s subscriber loss has accelerated over past years. The sports network was down 4.5 percent in the first quarter, off 5.5 percent in the second quarter, and down a whopping 6 percent in the third quarter.
