To say that recent events in Portland are “troubling” understates their seriousness. We are witnessing the breakdown of law and order, with almost two months of riots, which the media whitewash as “mostly peaceful.” It is hard to know from a distance what is really happening on the streets of Portland, but certainly rumors are circulating, and being widely believed, that federal agents are arbitrarily arresting innocent people and brutalizing them. This is reported as fact without any attribution or source by people who should know better, including Fox News’s Judge Andrew Napolitano. But even more disturbing than mostly peaceful protests that occasionally turn violent and destroy property,

Had Lincoln followed this guys advise, well, we wouldn't have to worry about BLM and Antifa. Instead we would have two nations and one probably would be less pleasant for blacks and Antifa types.

Well, Elliott, I consider several states to be in full rebellion and we know what happened to the southern states when that happened. So, no, do not pull back federal troops. Consent of the governed does not mean mob rule.

What to do about Portland? Change the name of the city to Hell and paint it red. Send in Clint Eastwood and let him take care of business.

The essayist seems to think everything is super groovy now that there is a little fence around the federal building.

The only people who don’t want the troops are the liberal crazies who voted in the mayor and council. It doesn’t bother them that Portland is going to hell in a hand basket. Protect Federal property! It belongs to everybody. Remember Governor Reagan sending in the Guard to clean out the protesters ravaging the inside of buildings at USC over the protests of Chancellor Clark Kerr. Reagan said that those were State buildings and he was putting an end to the riots. I don’t worry about Trump. He’s already figured this out. This author is a milquetoast and not really looking ahead.

Let the damned place burn. Offer asylum in another state for those who need to leave for their safety. Require the City of Portland to reimburse every dime of damage done to local businesses and private property. Let the city government go screw itself!

I have come to the conclusion that many parents (woke and otherwise) will be burying some of their offspring before the militant left can be made to understand reality. That reality is that while there are three ways to resolve issues (the soap box, the ballot box, and the cartridge box) only the first two are tolerated in this country.
There was relatively little crime about a hundred years ago. People were too busy just scratching out a living to put up with anti-social folks, miscreants, and criminals. Which is why large oak trees were so popular.

Wait just a minute. I live in Portland and I, along with thousands of other US citizens who live here, demand that the Federal Agents stay! Mayor Wheeler and city council and the Governor do not have the authority to take away the rights of a single one of us under the US constitution. The Democrat/Marxists are allowing the laws to be flouted by violent punks who are being paid to destroy property and to harass and attack the police purely as a political strategy to try to destroy Trump. The the Democrats and their news media lie and lie and lie about it and then lie about the lies.

So the author's take is that we should let Federal courthouses burn to the ground whenever some local anarchists choose to do so. Don't make the local anarchists mad by protecting government property from their depredations. He is writing about Portland but his philosophy applies nationwide.

In Seattle, Portland and elsewhere "federal agents" are getting their butts handed to them.
I'm a staunch supporter of the president, and I'm confident that he will be re-elected-- unless he seems too weak to put down this insurrection (it is well past the disconnected "riots" stage). Citizens are being attacked, beaten and killed across the country. Their homes and businesses are being burned down. If a collection of DHS, DEA, ATF agents cannot crush the thugs, he needs to send in an overwhelming force of troops to stop all the destruction "in an hour," as he promised.
The very worst possibility for the rule of law in the USA would be if the president seemed unable to put down the mobs.

Yes, move federal offices (and federal officers) out and let cities sort it out by themselves. Yes, it will be a disaster for the cities but they do not want to be saved.

This essay contained a lot of words to make an inconclusive, fearful, uncertain, and redundant argument that convinced me of the opposite conclusion.
For one, the consent of the governed. That is not the mayor or police chief. Ask the business and property owners what they consent.

Send the mayor an invoice for one federal building and the cost to relocate every office. Empty the building, move outside city limits and leave a hulk behind. Let the city become the western Detroit.

The President needs to declare Portland and Seattle in a state of rebellion. He needs to arrest both Mayors and charge them with sedition. Then he needs to send in overwhelming force be it federal law enforcement or military troops to quell the rebellion. Also he should authorize the use deadly force and all involved that are arrested are considered terrorists. These terrorist are an existential threat to our country as are those that support them.

One thing that I've learned out of this situation is that the voters of Portland are extremely ignorant and that the Chief of Police should be terminated for dereliction of duty.

Keep our federal officers out of Portland. If the federal buildings are burned to the ground, send Portland the bill. Not worth one officer being blinded let alone three.
