President Trump Friday awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Jim Ryun, a three-time Olympian and former GOP congressman from Kansas, calling him a "legendary runner" and "true American patriot. He's a giant of American athletics and dedicated public servant and a man of charity, generosity, and faith," Trump said in a White House ceremony where Ryun was joined by his family.

Ryun was a fabulous runner - - and a wonderful man - - but - - - - he didn't have the killer instinct which all great-achieving athletes do. He choked twice on the big stage of the Olympics - - allowing much less talented runners to take down the gold medal. Paraphrasing Leo Durocher - - nice guys don't take home the gold.

I can attest personally to Jim Ryun's humility as late one afternoon getting ready to go to the SF Examiner Indoor Track Meet at the Cow Palace, I was doing my daily run on Lake Street in San Francisco and fell into pace and talked with a tall, lanky man with whom I ran for a couple of blocks before saying, "Say, aren't you Jim Ryun?" to which he only replied "Yes," and then went on to ask me about MY running. You're a class act, Jim.

Well done Mr. Ryan! I got to meet him and his wife as they were invited runners to our local 5 mile road race back in 1991. I got a picture of him holding both my daughters, who were 5 and 6 at the time. Great gentleman and even greater Christian.

My nephew's wife worked for him as a Congress aide before my nephew and his wife were married. Valerie stopped working for Ryun in 1998. In 2000, Jim and wife took the time to visit with Valerie and Steve at a bridal shower hosted by her Congress aide friends.

When I was in high school, Jim Ryun was one of my heroes. Even when Marty Liquori beat Ryun, he marveled at Ryun's courage and tenacity. Shortly after outrunning Ryun in one enormously big race, Marty was standing before a gaggle or reporters, catching his breath. Marty admitted that, while he had beat Ryun, Ryun had more heart. Marty said something to the effect of, "Look at me. I just ran a mile in under four minutes, and I'm feeling fine. But Jim is back there puking his guts out. Jim has heart."

GQ Magazine was forced to issue a correction after one of its columnists misidentified former segregationist Alabama Gov. George Wallace as a Republican in an effort to smear the GOP as racist. Laura Bassett, who also writes as freelance political reporter, wrote a Wednesday op-ed titled “The Anti-Abortion Movement Was Always Built on Lies,” attempting to chronicle evangelical efforts in building up the pro-life movement. The crux of Bassett’s piece rests on the foundation that the pro-life movement was “bought and paid for the Christian right,” to morph the Republican Party into the pro-life party.
