An article published in the Los Angeles Times Tuesday said that the “Star-Spangled Banner” should be replaced by Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me.”
LA Times contributor Jody Rosen cited “viral posts on social media” which said the anthem is racist, then argued it is aesthetically a bad song in the article. Rosen concluded saying the message of “Lean on Me” can be a foundation for a “decent” society.
“If the point of a national anthem is to provide a mnemonic, a reminder in music and words of the ideas and values that this place is supposed to stand for, you could do worse than ‘Lean on Me,’” Rosen wrote.

Great song to really jive to. Clapping hands would liven up the rendition, swaying back and forth, snapping fingers, etc. Might as well pick Da Camptown Ladies, though.

Oddly enough, when I see the flag the last thought I have is to 'lean on it'.

I can hardly wait to watch the palookas and bare-knuckle brawlers hold hands and lift their hearts towards heaven while singing "Lean On Me" at the start of the next Yankees/Mets game.
Imagine the United States Armed Forces standing crisply at attention as "Lean On Me" is wiltingly tooted by the United States Marine Corps band.
The lunatic left has always been a circle-jerking joke but they've managed to build up a bit of steam lately, mainly because of the circle-jerking schnorring republicans who are pretty much totally afraid of their own collective shadow.
This is what happens when you don't lay traps at the sight of the first rodent on your property.
That was Rose Royce, #7.

So take the anthem based on fortitude, tenacity, bravery and total commitment towards freedom and liberty and replace it with a ditty about emotional support when you are sad and need a hug. Please spare us from these dimwits.

California is moving up first it was Kumbaya nw Lean on Me in another month they'll come up with something else. They should try the trumpet tune of the Mexican Delguello.
I'm with the poster that when I see the American flag the last thing I want is someone leaning on me.

Are they going to have Jim Bakker's daughter sing it?
Just asking.
Or maybe she was Tammy Bakker's daughter.
I really don't remember.
But it was awful.

Lean on me. The rest of the world has been leaning on the US for many years, we don't need to request they continue it when we play our National Anthem

That would be popular worlld-wide... since that is what many countries have been doing for decades... leaning (imposing) on America's generosity and concern for people. Those of us who actually pay taxes are feeling the pain more and more.

I don't need to lean on anybody, well, maybe in my old Navy days while on liberty, and I certainly don't want anybody leaning on me. If you are a greedy, helpless drain on productive society maybe suicide is a better answer?

Have to recognize Bill Withers was a great man, born in Slab Forks West Virginia, served in our military before starting his music making, which is wonderful but not National Anthem material. More for late evening, like “Ain’t no Sunshine” etc.

The last time there was a serious discussion for the selection of our National Anthem, the alternates to the Star Spangled Banner were America the Beautiful, and The Battle Hymn of the Republic. I'm surprised they haven't pushed for some gang-banger rap song.

I nominate "Once in a Lifetime" by the Talking Heads.
It's silly, has nothing to do with anything, but we're just being downright silly now, aren't we?!!
Good Lord - there is no brain-dead depth to which leftists will not descend and wallow.
Jody Rosen's parents should now be humiliated they birthed it.

Americans are not leaners. We are pillars. Everyone needs a friend or relative to lean on at some point but it is not a way of life for us. Taking care of our own is a given for most people.
The Star-Spangled Banner is a testament to a battle well-fought and how the flag, still flying when all was said and done, was a symbol of American toughness.

The Defense of Fort McHenry
20 September 1814
Verse 3
Oh! Thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust".
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
I wish people would sing this verse, especially when our troops are in harm's way across the world.
