Since the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 25, crowds demanding racial justice have surged into public spaces across the country and throughout the world—with solidarity actions springing up in South Korea and South Africa, Argentina and Australia. Domestically, demonstrations have materialized not only in major cities, but also in small-town America, including places with deeply conservative populations. As several political scientists noted in The Washington Post, "The United States rarely has protests in this combination of size, intensity and frequency; it usually has big protests or sustained protests, but not both."
When will the protests end? And what will it mean when they do?

I read as much as I could, in-depth. About 1/2 through, I resorted to a very broad SKIM of the paragraphs. The writer was enjoying his intelligentsia and academia wordsmithing a bit too much. (A LOT of noise, signifying nothing, except some history of protests.
And then his conclusion: “America has awakened to patterns of structural racism and the systemic nature of police abuse.”
Idiot.

It should be called "How Journalism Ended".

I have worked at a university for a long time. I LOATHE academic wordsmithing so much I can't even find the words to describe my loathing. And it's slipping into journalism as well.

These "protests" will come to an end right after the General Election in November, after Trump wins in a landslide.

They will end when there is a price for their criminal behavior. A few homeowners emptying mags into a mob or 18 wheelers refusing to be Reginald Denny would be a great start.

Never read the Atlantic, but it is obvious to anyone that the answer is: Diminishing Returns.
No one likes to see what they have done.

fta" "..crowds demanding racial justice..."
I thought the issue was about police brutality and over use of force.....
Oh wait, it was about toppling statues...
No, it was about "white supremacy" "inherent racism" "white priviledge" "social justice" "systemic racism"
I was wrong, it was about socialism and income inequality...
It has now evolved into "we need to break up the country by repudiating the Founders, many of whom were slave owners, so WHATEVER they came up with has to be NO GOOD"
What happened to the issue of police brutality and over use of force???

The riots will not end when Trump wins in a landslide, they only end if Trump loses.

The article's premise: There is always an undercurrent of dissent, which flares up into mass melee after a trigger event such as a death (in this case).
It was Gandalf who explained that evil is never permanently defeated, but slinks away and changes shape to attack another day.

The 'protests' (read: Looting, killing, rioting, and mass intimidation) will not end with the election. The last one taught us that. Also, IMHO Chauvin was overcharged and the autopsy says that following an approved procedure was not the cause of death. I think he'll be found not guilty. Ditto the cop in the Rayshard Brooks death. There'll be more protests after that (but hopefully, we'll have the brains to settle those in February... because... Cold outside).
I agree with one of the posters above... this will end when protesters are ONLY allowed to protest. Laws against destroying public property needs to immediately, swiftly enforced. Ditto looting. Ditto rioting. And if ANYone beats down ANYone, they need to be hauled off with visible speed. A few testimonials from basement dwellers that they are anguished about having to spend a decade in a federal facility would help.

I don’t think it will matter whether or not PDJT wins or loses - this Frankenstein monster will continue to grow and destroy - though it will happen quicker with the left in charge of everything.

All lies and propaganda but then you knew that. I live in one of those small towns and my town along with a list of others in the area was targeted by an outside organization for protests. The local radio station was an accomplice in getting the news out that a protest would be held. A couple of white nerds showed up but nobody else. The popularity of the BLM movement is being forced and imposed upon people who do not care what those idiots want. America is being suckered into believing that "systemic racism" is a problem other than a fantasy in some peoples' heads. It's a huge annoyance but it will die under its own lack of substance and support. Then black people will suffer from the actual racism that their fanatical handlers have created.

I seem to recall that the mass protests and riots by the left in 1968 ended with the landslide election of Nixon. It seems that most voters (at least the ones who pay taxes) are not particularly fond of endless rioting and looting by left wing extremists.

This is typical Atlantic leftist drivel. They once more tell us about the fraud of 'systemic racism' and 'systemic abuse by police'.
Both are frauds. The only systemic racism is affirmative action - that is systemic racism against whites and in college admissions, against asians, too. Yes, there is systemic racism, deeply embedded - and if favors minorities in schools, hiring and promotions.
End systemic racism - end affirmative action.
