Turkey's Hagia Sophia becomes a political battleground

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wants to turn Istanbul's world-famous tourist site into a mosque. He is trying to score points with Turkish voters, but his plans have encountered considerable resistance. Hagia Sophia is the symbol of Istanbul and Turkey's most popular tourist attraction. Every year, millions of visitors take in its gigantic brick dome and elaborate frescoes, which have earned the building UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site status. But Hagia Sophia is more than just an architectural masterpiece: It has always been a political symbol, as well. The monumental structure was built by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the sixth century A.D.

Comments:

It broke my heart to see this amazing church turned into a museum. At least one could see some of the exquisite mosaics. What will happen to them and so much else if Erdogan’s plan goes through?

Turkish law is clear - it was supposed to be for public use and a historical site. Turning it back into an active mosque is just a stunt.

The Hagia Sophia had for centuries been both a church and a mosque. Attaturk brought Turkey into the 20th Century by westernizing the nation and, in an act furthering national unity, turning the architectural wonder into a museum. Even today, you can still see both islamic symbols and crosses within the frescoes. Now Erdogan wants to make it a mosque again as he takes Turkey back to the 7th Century.

Isn't it already a mosque with all the paintings covered over in muslim phrases?

Turkey and Greece exchanged harsh words on Saturday over the conversion of Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia into a mosque, a day after Islamic prayers were held at the ancient site for the first time in nine decades. President Tayyip Erdogan, who attended Friday’s ceremony that sealed his ambition to restore Muslim worship at Hagia Sophia, did not name Greece but said critics of the move were simply against Muslims and Turkey.

A United Nations expert’s report calling the January U.S. drone strike that killed top Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and nine other people a violation of international law is being called “spurious” by U.S. officials, who continue to defend the deadly operation. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement Thursday that the Trump administration rejects the report, which was presented to the Human Rights Council earlier that day by Agnes Callamard, UN special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions.

President Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order on law enforcement reform and said "chokeholds will be banned except if an officer’s life is at risk" as the nation reels from the death of George Floyd in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department and the ensuing unrest -- which has sparked calls for changes in policing nationwide as drastic as dismantling entire departments.

Venezuela's National Assembly on Thursday ratified opposition leader Juan Guaido as legislative speaker, defying a Supreme Court ruling approving a rival opposition figure more favorable to President Nicolas Maduro. The endorsement for Guaido continued a months-long stand-off with opposition rival Luis Parra, who Guaido has dismissed as "an accomplice to dictatorship".

After spending most of the pandemic crisis on vacation, an ice cream-fortified Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi finally emerged from her magnificent kitchen to propose a behemoth mess of a spending bill to allegedly save America’s faltering economy. Her 1,815-page proposal forms the “War and Peace” of legislative monstrosities. In fact, the endless big-government wish list contains generous payments for illegal immigrants, tax credits for wealthy residents of high-tax states, massive grants to fiscally irresponsible states, a national prohibition on identification for voters, and even federal loans for lobbyists.
Michael Flynn case should be dismissed to preserve justice 5 replies

Previously undisclosed documents in the case of former national security adviser Michael Flynn offer us a chilling blueprint on how top FBI officials not only sought to entrap the former White House aide but sought to do so on such blatantly unconstitutional and manufactured grounds. These new documents further undermine the view of both the legitimacy and motivations of those investigations under former FBI director James Comey. For all of those who have long seen a concerted effort within the Justice Department to target the Trump administration, the fragments will read like a Dead Sea Scrolls version of a “deep state” conspiracy.

When universities abruptly shut down last month because of the coronavirus pandemic, many students returned to their parents’ homes, distraught over having to give up their social lives and vital on-campus networking opportunities. Graduating seniors lost the chance to cross anything but a virtual commencement stage. But the campus closures have created much greater calamity in the lives of the more than a million international students who left their home countries to study in the United States. Many had been living in college dorms and were left to try to find new housing, far from home in a country under lockdown.
On Easter, a nation clings to hope 6 replies

After a 40-day period dedicated to fasting, self-denial, and prayer, Christians begin a new phase in their calendar: a 50-day celebration of Christ’s resurrection, which ends on Pentecost Sunday. It is deliberate that the celebration of Easter lasts longer than that of Lent. And now, at a time of suffering in which hope is more difficult than usual to maintain, it is a good moment to keep that lesson in mind. For all the pain and loss that the world’s peoples are enduring, a brighter future awaits.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo called on the federal government to take control of the medical supply market. Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker demanded that President Trump take charge and said “precious months” were wasted waiting for federal action. Some critics are even more direct in demanding a federal takeover, including a national quarantine. It is the legal version of panic shopping. Many seem to long for federal takeovers, if not martial law. Yet like all panic shopping, they are buying into far more than they need while not doing as much as they could with what they have.

A densely populated neighbor of China, Vietnam has a weak health care system and a low budget for combating the coronavirus. So how has it managed to keep its COVID-19 infection rate so low? As the coronavirus pandemic rages in wealthy European countries, more than 10,000 kilometers (6,000 miles) from China where the outbreak began, Vietnam has widely been spared. In Germany alone, the latest numbers from the World Health Organization (WHO) show more than 30,000 people have been infected with COVID-19, resulting in 149 fatalities.

The Trump administration unsealed sweeping indictments against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and members of his inner circle on narco-terrorism charges on Thursday, a move that dramatically escalates the U.S. bid to force the authoritarian socialist from power. The indictment, which officials said was a decade in the making, comes as supporters of the U.S.-backed Venezuelan opposition movement to oust Maduro is fading, particularly as the outbreak of the coronavirus has effectively halted calls for citizens to turnout in the streets.

Despite the occasional looting, chaos, property damage, trespassing, rioting, graffiti, assaults, arson and general mayhem, the media consistently assure us that antifa “protesters” are “largely peaceful.” And since the majority of buildings in Portland, Seattle and Denver haven’t been looted yet, who am I to argue?Of course, it takes only a sliver of the population to transform downtowns into a mess and create quality-of-life issues for thousands of law-abiding citizens. And the mayors who surrender parts of their cities to left-wing “protesters” are tacitly endorsing lawlessness themselves. There’s little doubt that if alt-right activists

It was Meghan and Harry against the palace “vipers.” Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were so popular internationally that they were eclipsing the rest of the royal family — so a coterie of snake-like royal courtiers, the so-called “men in gray suits,” worked to thwart them, according to excerpts from a new biography that is very sympathetic to the famous couple. “Finding Freedom: Harry, Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family,” which is being serialized by the Times of London starting this weekend, said the palace “establishment’’ lived in fear of the couple’s global appeal. So courtiers worked

Leftists in Portland are routinely committing violence in the downtown area. This week, the rioters have set their sights on the Hatfield Federal Courthouse, which is a mistake since vandalizing federal property isn't handled by the pusillanimous officials of Portland but by folks at the U.S. Department of Justice. U.S. Attorney Billy Williams announced on Friday that 18 individuals arrested during attacks on the Hatfield Federal Courthouse this past week are now facing federal charges. Court documents say protests in downtown Portland have been followed by criminal activity that includes assaults on law enforcement officers, arson, looting, destruction of property, and vandalism.

The coronavirus pandemic has been great for streaming services as consumers quarantine at home and watch more video. The same can’t be said for regular TV. AT&T reported it lost another 886,000 cable and satellite TV subscribers in the second quarter of 2020. The telecommunications giant—the second largest TV provider in the US behind only Comcast—lost about the same number of TV subscribers in the previous quarter. Its total subscriber base has eroded 18% in the last year alone. If sports were still on TV, AT&T and other providers may have been able to temporarily slow down the acceleration of cord-cutting. But without sports, expensive TV bundles don’t offer consumers enough value.

Law school is a notorious scam. In the course of three years, young victims pay for courses in property law but don’t learn how to buy a house. They take courses in contract law but are never taught how to write one. They take courses in litigation procedures but in a courtroom they literally don’t know when to stand up and when to sit down. In fact, it’s common for students to graduate without having seen the inside of a courtroom.
