Pharmaceutical giant Gilead has announced pricing for its coronavirus drug remdesivir, and it’s just short of an arm and a leg. Gilead said the drug will cost $520 per vial, or $3,120 for a six-vial treatment, for private insurance companies. And that’s for the short treatment. The long treatment will cost $5,720. The price will be different for government health care programs in developed countries, such as Medicare. The cost: $390 per vial, or $2,340 per patient on a short, six-vial treatment. “In normal circumstances, we would price a medicine according to the value it provides. Correction*

The authors name , Eric A. Blair, was George Owells real name . And , it's always been about the money. Ask Fauci, he makes hundreds of thousands a month ( yes. month) from drug patents.

Soros is just the top of a long list of Billionaire Communists. They know that peasant level financial “equality” will never apply to them. This ridiculous pricing for a drug is just another stab wound to capitalism. They developed it to treat hepatitis C and isn’t approved for any indication, just emergency (your going to die anyway so let’s try everything) use. Same thing was done with it for SARA and MERS and it failed completely. This isn’t a story about a savior drug, it’s another straw-man argument against us. Nothing new here.

Please consider what it costs a company to develop a drug, to establish its effectiveness through expensive clinical trials. That is the price of a drug. And it is huge. If it is a life saver...$3000 is not too much. You could compare it to the cost of heart triple bypass surgery. Anybody?

Dr Marc Siegel announced this morning that HHS has bought up the entire supply so that anyone who needs it can get it. It will be covered by Medicare.

Patents give drug companies limited monopolies. If the price is too high for the R&D involved, another company will have an incentive to develop a cheaper alternative.

#6. I am curious. What was the cost of Remdesivir when it was used to treat malaria? The same or has there been a price increase when used to treat COVID-19? I would suspect the latter.

#10: well, do your homework. The company had to go back into the investigative phase to determine safety and effectiveness.
#7: Then that drug will win.
#9: yes indeed.
#8: Right.

HCQ/Zpack is no longer recommended. There is a reason for it. It doesn't work. Remdesivir and Decadron have been shown to improve outcomes. So what would we want? Spend money on cheap drugs that don't work and pay for a 6-7 week stay on a ventilator in an ICU (at several tens of thousands of dollars)? Or use a more expensive drug that works up front and avoid a prolong ICU stay and expense? Oh, and improve outcomes.

I am not a conspiracy theorist but it's amazing that chlorofluoroquine with zinc and a couple of other additions showed promise in various places and seems to have been shut down actively and arbitrarily and this drug, which doesn't even do that much for a victim, is approved - chlorofluoroquine costs almost nothing - patents expired long ago - and this drug costs huge amounts when it only lessens symptoms and only for some people. Bad examples like this are one of the reasons the Medicare for all people gain any traction at all.

I am probably in the minority, but I get so sick of people bashing pharmaceutical companies all the time. And, no, I don't work for a pharmaceutical company or even own any stock in them.
Pharmaceutical companies spend tens, or hundreds, of millions of dollars developing each new drug, and well over 90% of those drugs never see the light of day. And when they do get a new drug that is released, they only have a period of I believe it is 10 years where they have exclusive rights to that medicine. After that it become generic and anyone can make and sell it. So they have to price the drugs that do get released high to recover not only the cost of developing and producing that drug, but also of developing all the failed drugs, and still make a profit for their stockholders (which is the ultimate reason that most companies exist).
If the government ever listens to all the criers and stops pharmaceutical companies from charging the prices they do for their new drugs, they will stop trying to develop 90% of the drugs they otherwise would. Very few new drugs or cures will be developed. And that is not a good thing!!!
For most of my life, I would get migraines, and would be stuck in bed for 2-3 days at a time waiting for them to pass. That meant I would sometimes loose 8 or even 10 days out of a month where I was basically useless. Then a pharmaceutical company invented Imitrex, and now when I get a migraine it maybe puts me out of commission for an hour at most, and usually not that long if I take an Imitrex as soon as I feel it coming on. I read once that they didn't think Imitrex had a good chance to work, and almost didn't develop it. Clearly, drugs like that would never be developed without the possibility of profits on the drugs that the pharmaceutical companies do get to market.

Except #14 at the same time Americans and their insurance are being charged exorbitant prices, you can go to Canada and Mexico and get the exact same drugs for pennies on the dollar.

There's a saying in the pharma business that for a given drug, the second pill costs half a dollar to produce. The first one costs half a billion dollars.

So now you know why the $15 HCQ / Zpack combo has been declared "ineffective" against Kung Flu! It cuts into the profits of Big Pharma and its swampy investors and lobbyists!!
