Five percent of New York City's population has fled since the coronavirus pandemic gripped the city, new smartphone data reveals. From March 1 to May 1, about 420,000 residents of the Big Apple left, particularly from the wealthiest neighborhoods, reported The New York Times. While there was relatively little change in some zip codes, others such as SoHo, the West Village, Morningside Heights, the Upper East Side, the Financial District, Midtown, Gramercy and Brooklyn Heights emptied by at least 40 percent.Meanwhile, Manhattan's overall population fell by almost 20 percent. Income was perhaps the strongest indicator of how many residents in a particular neighborhood had fled.

I noted an online class mate, resident of NYC decided it wasn't safe so she , mid crisis, evacuated to her home town in Kentucky to , get this, keep an eye on her aged grand mother. NYC, is this an example of the thinking your citizens do?

My daughter's 30 year old friend stayed in Brooklyn until this past week. She lives alone, and flew home to Cleveland as she knows the lockdown in NYC is going to last a long time. I asked my daughter if her friend was "quarantining" she didn't ask.

They should go to California or Illinois, they'd be more politically comfortable there.

Well so much for virtue signalling by allthose super smart and super virtuous New Yorkers, eh? Quarantine, what quarantine? That's only for schmuck deplorables (who they're now infecting by high-tailing it out of NYC).
Time to rename it the "NYC Virus". At this point they're more responsible for spreading it than the Chinese. 420,000 disease vectors.

Using cell phone usage data as a tool to track a change in population density is interesting but there are problems. My daughter works for in investment bank in NYC. They have been working from home since early March and many of them live out of the city. They will look like they evacuated, but in fact are simply at home.

Sorry 21 … disagree … Mr. Mayor understands fully that his tax base is US. Sooner or later a federal Democrat government will ship him 200 billion or so.

interesting dynamic in NYC now .Down in Das Village mask wearing is 50/50 . Mostly females ( at least apparent females) are wearing masks . Even when no one is around .
So DM is playing the class card? well a lot of the “residents” are young , single students , new grads , young striving couples or artistic types in “the arts” . They are the ones here for bright lights , ,studies and they are the staff of the restaurants , bars , shops ,theaters etc. They had a stash to support then a lil while but warren willhelm has extinguished that hope and they have returned to Mom .
Older residents have been through 9/11and know how this mayor is NOT up to reopen any time soon .He is & dirty $$$ ,lazy .horrid man .After the WTC and capable Rudy lots of us planned alt locations .Yes the city is dem to it’s shame will be interesting to see what changes in voting patterns .
