AUSTIN, Texas (KTRK) -- Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued executive orders Friday that outline how to reopen the state amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The announcement from the governor has been long awaited, with Abbott adding that the state must be guided by data and doctors, and all decisions will be based on that.
He started Friday's press conference with hope, noting that, "We are now beginning to see glimmers that the worst of COVID-19 may soon be behind us," and that Texas has the second most recoveries of all the states.

Won't happen soon enough for my daughter. She and her husband are working from home with a 2 and half year old and a 4 month old. "Fortunately" her brother, an unemployed lawyer, is working as their manny. He even mows their yard.

Schools will remain closed through the rest of the academic year (end of May/early June). My teacher wife is thrilled. She figured it would be a royal mess -- they are getting "in the groove" of distance learning and then to go back in early May -- it would take about a week to get back "to normal," maybe a week of review/instruction, and then finals. It'd be worse than a Chinese fire drill (pun intended). But it isn't a great thing for parents who may have to head back to work and deal with child care.

When it comes to data and doctors, a little skepticism is in order.

Gov Abbott disappoints. Looks like he just punted to buy time and look like he was doing something. We need more. Hope he does better going forward.

I just wanted to slap that one idiot reporter.
Gov. Abbot made it clear that they were going to reopen medicine for certain high-need things, like cancer treatments. So the idiot reporter had to go to "will you also allow them to restart doing abortions". I thought Gov. Abbot handled him very "diplomatically".
However, I wish that had been President Trump, who wouldn't have hesitated telling that reporter that he was an idiot and that killing perfectly healthy unborn babies was not the same thing as dealing with a disease like cancer!!!!!

Disappointing news. Nothing being done essentially, except appointing more bureaucrats to study, opine, discuss, and dither.

Mandating masks when people are at state parks????? Oh, yeah, I can see the runners and joggers keeping the masks on. That's gotta be dangerous, making it difficult to breathe.
That's a rule that is going to be flaunted. Masks up when some official is looking, masks down when not. Why not just ask people to use their best judgment?

Big fat nothing burger. I appreciate how he really changed the food handling rules to try and help the small restaurants keep going and reduced the grocery store supply chain. His swat team has all the "right names" but lets see how they coalesce and deliver. Anything tied to testing is wrong.. the entire world is now fighting for the few materials available to develop test kits. It is the flu... move on. If you think otherwise, please stay home, that is your right,. the rest of us have bills to pay.
