Raleigh, North Carolina police suspended the First Amendment Tuesday, dispersing a protest against the COVID-19 Chinese coronavirus lockdown and arresting one protester for failing to disperse. The police issued a statement declaring “Protesting is a non-essential activity” that was in violation of an executive order by Governor Roy Cooper (D) prohibiting mass gatherings. [Tweets]
Some protesters gathered in their cars, honking theor horns in unison at 15 minute intervals. [Tweets, Video]
Police cited sections 1 and 3 of the executive order.
Section 1 3.iii allows outdoor activity for exercise activities within restrictions of Section 3.
Section 3 defines mass gatherings indoors or outdoors as ten or more people with limited exceptions

Non-essential, perhaps. But Constitutionally protected. As is the right to peaceably assemble. We slid into a police state almost as if our skids were greased for it...

They need to go to court. If they just accept this, cities will continue to trample on 1st amendment rights.

Oh but I've heard it at least a dozen times in the last two days. Our rights are not absolute. Government can curtail them any time it wants for any reason it wants. History has shown that they can and will do just that, with the help of willing sheep.
So go home and do what your masters say. You have no rights unless government decides to allow it.

I wouldnt be s sure #5....... The sheeple enjoy being told what to do. The enjoy even more the government telling other people what they can and cant do. I would wager that if polled, at least half the population would agree with the police in this instance. Actually, I would bet better than half. Consider that 70% of liberal college students believe that communism is just peachy.
We, as a county are going to have to have a serious conversation about rights and where we want to go in the very near future. I have no issue, for example, of isolating those who pose a risk to the population as a whole, but not isolating the entire population. My fear, is that the lockdowns that we are experiencing now can be easily re-implemented for any health scare in the future.

Do I sense a pattern of these types of crackdown are largely being done by Democrats (governors and mayors)?

@#8 - Until the one's who agree with the police are they themselves arrested.
Do yourselves a favor in November. Do not vote for Democrats!! Their ultimate goal is to strip us all of our constitutionally guaranteed rights and to negate the Constitution. What you give up you will never get back without blood being shed............ maybe yours.

Are all of these state governors on solid constitutional footing re their individual state constitutions in order to be issuing all these draconian edicts? A lot of this crap is tantamount to the declaration of martial law. A few court challenges might be in order if the petitioners can find a courthouse that's open and a judge that's not hiding under his desk. I live near one of the biggest shopping malls in the state and it is a veritable ghost town. Thank God for WallyWorld.

Police are squandering all the good will they garnered with Blue Lives Matter. Such a shame. The lawsuits are going to be numerous.

Governor Cooper should be arrested and removed from office for dereliction of duty in not upholding the first amendment. Any police officer who enforces an unconstitutional directive should be immediately fired for not upholding their oath to protect the peoples rights under the constitution.
People need to take to the streets to protest this completely unacceptable, unconstitutional police state. The government and police can no longer be trusted with the welfare and freedom of American citizens.

#8, you may be right about the numbers and percentages of people who object strongly to tyrannical rule. Perhaps only a minority of us care enough about freedom to stand up and fight. But the founding generation may have been the same way. I was taught that the breakdown in 1776 was: ~33% Loyalists, ~33% indifferent and ~33% Revolutionaries. The moral is that those who believe in their cause need to stand their ground and fight.

I'm not surprised that Dem govs, mayors and police chiefs are embracing the role of dictator but I am surprised that so many support them and their arbitrary rules. The sheep claim it's for our own good that millions have lost their jobs and all of us are losing our liberty.

I remember back in the day when NC had a democrat governor (Hunt) for years, and NC was still a fairly conservative state. Times have changed. Too many Yankee transplants.
