Isn't it convenient how the Kenyan Wonder Boy delayed everything that he did so he would not be in office when the worst of it was implemented? He tried to avoid the horrors of Obamacare but that catastrophe struck earlier than anticipated. Good move on Donald Trump's part, car sales have been dwindling for about a year and a half. People do not want to pay for the efficiency mandates nor the whiz-bang electronics meant to override poor driving skills and inattention and to allow Big Brother to track movements. Keep your cameras and sensors too.

The article author won't say what should be said that being the C.A.F.E. standards have outlived their time. Time to revoke this stupid law. Simple market pressure will insure that cars with good MPG characteristics will be available to those who want them. I will support any law that does away with the extraordinarily stupid 'Stop/Start' systems being installed in autos today. S/S technology adds about $2,300 to the sticker and does nothing to improve mileage for folks that are not in a stop and go driving environment.

“ In fact, America’s fuel-efficiency standards got their start in 1975 as a way to mitigate the impact of the 1973-1974 Arab oil embargo. At the time, with oil prices surging, inflation raging and increasingly worthless dollars flooding global oil markets, it seemed like a good idea.” Richard Nixon was responsible for this federal nightmare. Since Nixon imposed price controls on oil, gasoline prices could not reflect the reduced supply, giving us long lines at gas stations and odd/even days to buy gas. So, Nixon had his newly formed EPA impose MPG standards on new cars to show that he was solving a problem he caused. As with all federal regulations, the mileage requirements grew worse, reaching the delusional level under the equally delusional Obama. With all of these mileage rules passed by regulators, not Congress. Ultimate madness was in 2009, when Obama and Pelosi gave $15 billion of our money to the car companies so that they could build engines and transmissions to meet the increasing MPG standards Obama imposed. I still recall Ford’s boast that it didn’t take bailout money while never mentioning the $6 billion auto plant that taxpayers built for Ford. A plant Lord Obama briefly toured to take credit for his folly.

I had hoped that this would have been done sooner, but I'm sure that all the evil fake investigations and sham impeachment held this up. This was the most destructive of the laws written under The Zero which daily impact the average American, via their cars.

FTA: "Of course, everyone likes clean air. But our fuel-efficiency standards didn’t start out with that as their goal." Nothing ever does. There are those INTENDED side-effects that evolve, and this is an example. Traffic deaths have generally decreased for years, even with more per capita miles traveled. 50,000-plus was common decades ago, when cars were heavy and made of steel. The toll today is under 40,000. The "danger" scare doesn't play out in the real world. Ethanol is going to be a component of "gasoline" until hell freezes over. It is incredibly profitable to farmers and key to the economy of some states that play a big part in Presidential politics.

These fuel efficiency standards were just one more "turd in the punchbowl" that Obama intentionally left behind as he we leaving the White House (with the silverware) in order to screw things up for his successor.

The Feds should have NOTHING to say about fuel economy. It should be whatever the customer chooses to purchase. Want a 700hp pavement burner? That should be just fine. If you want a silly little Prius, fine by me, just don't try to force me to have one. My everyday car is an Accord which gets 42 mpg on flat ground at a steady 65 mph in warm weather. I have the biggest V8 in my F-150, too, because I haul stuff sometimes and need the power in the mountains. MY CHOICE, keep the Feds out of my business.

Count me as one of a diminishing number of "coronavirus response" skeptics. My vantage point is that of a working-class person (service manager in an auto repair shop). My state of Virginia has joined the growing number of states that has ordered its citizens to remain in their homes except for essential reasons, and a shutdown of non-essential businesses until at least June 10th. The good news for me is that auto repair is classed as an essential service and I have enough diverse skills to make me the kind of employee who will be the last to be laid off.
