New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy may have caved on closing all the gun stores during the pandemic, but there’s one place where he’s drawing a bright red line in the sand. You people simply can not be trusted to pump your own gas. This has been a bone of contention in New Jersey for ages, and some proponents of doing things the way that virtually the entire rest of the country does it hoped that the current, dire conditions might move the Governor to reconsider. One such group is the New Jersey Gasoline, Convenience, Automotive Association (NJGCA).
Sal Risalvato, NJGCA Executive Director, surveyed his members on the issues

You give some people a little authority and they go crazy with it. Strangely enough they all seem to be democrats. You can't physically force people to stay inside, you can't stop them from shopping for supplies and who on earth would have thought to stop them from getting gas. At least states now know who not to elect next election.

Meh. It is, of course, a silly job-protecting concession to some union - I mean 'Associatiion' - but it is still quaint and cute and let's face it - these people probably couldn't get a job doing anything else. Don't you know they're 'special'?

What???? Is this for real? Will someone please let this Governor know that people do know how to clean their hands after they pump gas. This is beyond crazy.

A bit of local perspective, since most Garden Staters actually love full serve.
1) You don’t get your shoes and hand smelling like gasoline;
2) Most locals keep the car running while it’s being refueled, so it’s warm in the winter and cool in the summer. And no, the cars don’t all blow up as a result, even though it’s a really dumb practice.
3) Everything else in NJ is either expensive, decrepit, or corrupt. This is one small pleasure that everyone pays for that makes life easier.
Anywhere else this wouldn’t work, but NJ is truly it’s own world.

OK, I'm in my late 70's and have never pumped my gas. I wouldn't know how and I have trouble handling the vacuum cleaner, so I appreciate the one station in my town that has someone pump the gas. I always tip them because I really appreciate the help. They are not going to get or give the virus. The attendant has gloves on and a mask.

I am pumping my own gas. I do not want to wait for an attendant to get off their cellphone with personal calls to finally shuffle out and pump my gas, then try to sell me on windshield wipers, adding oil, or some other sham.

70 YO here, I live in NJ, sorry not interested in learning how to pump gas. When on the road the husband does it, I guess if we are separated for some reason, I will have to learn.

The NJ Governor seems out of touch with reality with how modern gas pumps actually work in relations to paying at the pump. There is no need for human interaction when paying at a gas pump with the capacity to accept credit cards as most pumps do today. Perhaps the Governor is too used to being chauffered around and has never needed to fill a car's tank up with gas. Also, mist gas stations (at least the ones near me) all have hand sanitizer by the pumps to help get rid of germs. If you pump your gas correctly, you do not gas gas smell on you hands or shoes.

I'm old enough to remember when gas station attendants came out to pump your gasoline, then checked your oil, and squeegeed the windshield. Then they'd return to the station with your cash payment and return with your change and a complimentary drinking glass--free with fill-up.
I wonder if New Jersey also still has elevator attendants to greet you and press the floor buttons at your request? Maybe that went out with the manually-operated elevator doors and scissor-fold elevator gates.

I ran into this bizarre law out in Oregon a few years ago. I drove up to the pumps with a rental car, and there were some really scuzzy tattooed freaks hanging around and one headed for my car, as I headed for the pump. He said, "I'll pump the gas", and I told him I didn't need that. He said it was the law and got between me and the pump in a bit of a territorial pose. I was surprised and asked about this law, and he explained that pumping your own gas was illegal in Oregon.
Another strike against that state, IMO.
