Virus Heroes and Zeros

We’re probably at the end of the beginning of the great Chinese coronavirus insanity, and in not-to-long, we’ll be back to work, despite the people screaming that Trump wants to kill all the old people to please Wall Street fatcats because of course he does. We’ll also soon be assessing blame. There’s lots of blame because there are a lot of stupid people and institutions who should be blamed. There are also heroes. I wrote about them the other day. But most of the people you recognize from the idiot box were zeros. The list of zeros must begin with the media, as if that’s a shock.

The MSM who hate Trump should understand that he is working night and day over this. Before the unproductive gotcha questions start in the virus conferences, acknowledging this, would be basic class and would bring credibility to themselves. I'm not sure who raised these kids but their lack of any class and respect is on display to all of the US and their kids will one day watch it too without a political eye.

I read the title of the article and then saw the author and immediately started to chuckle. Although I am in lock step with Kirt, I could never write as pithy or clever as he does. He’s a master in turning a phrase. (I think I’ll read it again.)

some of this went right over my head, but I enjoyed it. Little Andrew Cuomo is a nasty duplicate of his father. he is not an acceptable version of his father, Mario. the networks, including Fox, are pimping out little Mario, for no good reason, in my opinion.

Funny guy! “ The Atlantic has sucked up to the Chinese so hard that if you read one of its Xi-fluffing features, a half-hour later you’re ready to read it again.” The problem? It takes a day to read an Atlantic article (slight exaggeration).

If the demonrats switch to Cuomo, the Republicans need to ask, every time he is in front of a microphone, what happened to the $6 billion which went missing from HHS while he was running it. They also need to run ads featuring his gleeful signing of his “abortion up to the moment of birth” bill and his lighting of the Empire State Building in pink to celebrate it. He is thoroughly corrupt scum.

Good commentary, as usual. Lots of zeroes, mostly the usual folks. But in many ways, the USA was better prepared than most countries for this, in spite of the socialists. There is a good article on Fox that reports on an international commission saying that the US was the most prepared country before this pandemic. The Global Health Security Index ranked only US, Canada, Australia, UK, France, Sweden and Finland as "Most Prepared" for a pandemic. An interesting map of pandemic preparedness before this event at the GHS web site: https://www.ghsindex.org/

Whatever you think about President Trump and his response to this global pandemic that sparked from a Chinese “wet market” selling wildlife, you cannot exactly be heartened to behold the response offered by Democrats. The party’s presumed nominee, former Vice President Joseph R. Biden, finally mounted the barricades this week to personally combat the Wuhan virus by — what else? — setting up a television studio in his Delaware home to offer “counterprogramming” to the president and his crisis team of doctors, public health officials, industry leaders and economic experts. Watching Mr. Biden stumble, mumble and dodder through a simple speech in his living room

It shows, for one thing, how far COVID-19 has to go before it equals the average seasonal flu mortality, worldwide. If I had to predict, I would guess that it will eventually reach the average level. Will it get to 2x the average number of flu deaths, worldwide? Looking at current trends, I don’t see how that will happen. But time will tell. Cockburn attended Joe Biden’s virtual press conference on Wednesday afternoon. As he struggled to keep his eyes open, he noticed a small piece of paper by Biden’s elbow — a list of names, written in a shaky hand. So Cockburn screenshotted it, then turned his desktop upside down. Here’s Joe Biden’s shortlist for America’s first female vice president: Eleanor Roosevelt Why sandbag the Senate when you can handbag it? Mrs Roosevelt is a rising star of the Democratic left’s woke wing. She’s never seen in public without her handbag, and it’s crammed with big plans for the post-COVID-19 bounce-back.

Epochal events like the coronavirus pandemic can change an awful lot of things in politics, as in other areas of life. Some pols lucky (or unlucky) enough to be in the spotlight are going to get a lot more public exposure than you could buy with a billion dollars worth of ads; some will do very well with all that exposure, while others may not. One who has done conspicuously well is suddenly appearing in prediction markets for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination:(Snip for tweet)And that has led a few conspiracy theorists (mostly conservatives, who figure anything negative about the presumptive presidential nominee

The Moralizing Cuomo Brothers 15 replies

Turn on the TV these days and you are bound to catch one of the Cuomo brothers inveighing against the “selfish.” Chris Cuomo on CNN harangues any one who dares suggest that America restart its economy, while Andrew Cuomo delivers lectures on the importance of staying home lest one expose the elderly to illness. Both brothers have inherited their father’s penchant for high and moralistic rhetoric. They have also inherited his incoherent moral philosophy. Mario Cuomo was given to flowery denunciations on many subjects, but not abortion. There he would fall silent and simply say that he is “personally opposed” to it.

A piece published in The Atlantic made the argument this week that the "idea" of former Vice President Joe Biden is enough to defeat President Trump in November and that in order to do so, Biden would simply have to "stay alive." "Democrats need little from the front-runner beyond his corporeal presence," Atlantic contributing writer Alex Wagner wrote on Tuesday in a piece titled "Stay Alive, Joe Biden." Wagner suggested that Democratic voters are so eager to oust Trump that Biden's ongoing campaign has less weight than his decades-old familiarity.

In the middle of the bill's hundreds of pages are details regarding exactly who can expect to receive money and how much they can expect. Here is a breakdown. Who is eligible? The bill makes clear that everyone is eligible except for nonresident aliens and those who can be used as the basis for deductions for another person. "Seniors, veterans, the unemployed and low-income Americans would be eligible too," Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley said Wednesday.

Even before the coronavirus pandemic forced the nightlife industry to go dark throughout the country, strippers and other adult entertainers were among the first professionals to see their bottom lines take a hit as customers dwindled and practiced social distancing from the stage, as well as its performers, out of Covid-19 concerns. Unsurprisingly, however, strippers and sex workers have also proven particularly resourceful when it comes to reinventing the industry amid a crisis that seems tailor-made to destroy it. Last weekend, Las Vegas strip club Little Darlings began hosting drive-through strip shows and nude hand-sanitizer wrestling. Now, a strip club in Portland, Oregon is putting its dancers to work

The Senate's $2 trillion coronavirus relief bill may be the largest rescue package in U.S. history, but it doesn't provide nearly enough for New York state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday. The bill, tentatively approved early Wednesday, "would really be terrible for the state of New York," Cuomo said at his daily briefing in Albany. Cuomo's criticism came as White House officials made clear that President Donald Trump plans to sign the massive relief bill into law as soon as Congress sends it to him.

Undocumented workers have long filled thousands of jobs in Massachusetts on construction sites, in restaurant kitchens and on cleaning crews. But there's one crucial difference: Undocumented immigrants can't access unemployment benefits. Three people who call the Boston area home, but have no legal status, shared their fears with WGBH News about surviving without a paycheck and, during a worsening public health crisis, being fearful of accessing medical help.
