Invariably, when Americans feel threatened at an existential level, they buy weapons. That's because existential threats prove the truth in the saying that, when seconds count, the police are minutes away. Americans are currently worried that coronavirus will leave America’s normal infrastructure in tatters. Just a few days ago, USA Today reported on that fear and how it’s driving gun sales. At the same time that ordinary Americans want to exercise their Second Amendment rights, government officials in traditionally Democrat enclaves are trying to prevent people from doing so. In mid-March, Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen, of Champaign Illinois, signed an executive order declaring a state of emergency,

Absolutely they are. As well as any place that sells ammo. And all 200 million weapons in the country should be aimed at the dims and msm.

Didn't go shopping for firearms when all of this started. But looked just to see what's going on. The three online gun stores I checked out had all of the pump action 12 gauges Out of Stock. If you are will to pay thousands of dollars you can get a over and under shotgun. I've got all I need. Unless there is a complete breakdown of society. When all of this madness stops you'll be able to get some bargains on used stuff.

Over the weekend NJ's Governor Murphy issued an order shutting down the NICS system effectively stopping gun sales.

They are always essential, right behind having several guns and a pile of ammunition already in your home and at least one on your person. Trust nobody.

If gun stores aren't essential (2nd Amendment), let's go ahead and shut down the press and internet (1st Amendment). Heck, let the National Guard, Army Reserve and police invade our homes and use them for a base of operations while we're at it (3rd Amendment). While they're hanging out emptying the frig and taking the toilet paper (and making sure you don't have any guns), they can go through hard drives, phones, taxes, wills, deeds, etc. etc. (4th Amendment) - just to see what you're up to.

Yes, obvoiusly.
BUT - what sort of a pink PollyAnna bubble do these folks live in that they have never even imagined that they might need to provide for their own defense in an emergency?
The time to think about exactly what guns to get, and to get some skilled, relevant instruction, and to get some significant ammunition (a couple hundred rounds, minimum) in stock, some spare magazines, is NOT when there is a government shutdown of law enforcement like Philly has announced.
Best wishes to all of them, but hope is not a plan. Hard fact, You have exactly as much security as you brought with you.
I will be sighting in a new AR pistol today at the range.

Of course #9 you are correct, but as with other supplies, people are stocking up on guns/ammo as well because we don't know how or when this will end. In PA the NICS system was shut down last week. On the Governor's edict of what are essential businesses there is no place where retail guns/firearms is listed. Sporting goods is the only thing close to this, and of course that is not essential. Amazing how there is no directive on this particular trade. You have to fill out a waiver to appeal being shut down as well as fending off locals who want to shame you into closing. They also say if you get a citation for being open you cannot apply for state relief for paying employees, etc. My husband is part owner in 2 of these businesses. He also owns a distributor in Ohio that supplies parts to companies that received letters from the government yesterday telling them they need to stay open. So he is dealing with bureaucracy in 2 states. Lord help us all.

Absolutely yes. Keeping gun stores open is a sign that government intends to stay in their lane where possible in the midst of needing to take extraordinary measures.
It's the acid test for true intentions of those in power.

Ask you local Sheriff if you should be prepared to defend yourself in times of crisis. You know, those times when law enforcement is busier than usual. Unless he is a liberal flake, like some we see in the news, he will say yes!
Police Chiefs are a little different from the Sheriffs. Police Chiefs are appointed by politicians, Sheriffs are elected. However, you really don't need to ask anyone, because you already know the correct answer.

Thanks to the panic sowed so vigorously by the democrats and media, I would say yes. But then I am of the opinion that these gun hating liberals don't care about their fellow citizens or the constitution. They want power and lots of it.

I have several friends who just don’t understand my gun safe and its contents, or my stash of ammunition. They say things like “you don’t NEED a (fill in the blank)” or “we have to DO SOMETHING about those (fill in the blanks)”. They don’t own any guns. I’m waiting until a couple of weeks from now, when they delicately inquire as to the possibility of “borrowing” a firearm and some ammunition because they tried to buy one and they can’t find any. I’ll take pleasure in answering: “sorry - they’re ALL being used,”

We have a "shelter in place" order coming in my county Tuesday midnight. Our County Sheriff has deemed gun stores and ranges as essential businesses and they can stay open.
GRIN. Go Kansas.
