There has never before come a time when I felt the need to ponder the fate of toilet paper. But here we are: the year is 2020 and the wealthy United States is running out of toilet paper.
As it turns out, toilet paper was invented by the Chinese in the 1st Century. By the 6th Century, it was in widespread use. The toilet paper roll with easily detachable squares was patented in 1891.
But in March of 2020, American retailers ran out of toilet paper because the Chinese coronavirus fear seized the sanity of our people. We have finally come full circle with toilet paper: the Chinese giveth

I agree with OP. I don't get the connection between hoarding TP and the coronavirus. It's made in the US -- Oregon and Washington State, I think.

Problem is, other idiots make a run on TP--for whatever reason--and then when you need some, there are no squares to spare. I know our local grocery is all out but we are well stocked. Thinking of setting up a stand like a lemonade stand, 5 bucks a roll.

Same here, OP! The only thing I can think of is, ask yourself what you could bear to be without were you trapped at home for two or more weeks.
And, have these toilet paper hoarders found themselves messily indisposed in the past, say after a hurricane, or a crippling ice storm?
I've heard that beef and poultry have disappeared from shelves, eggs, too.
Alex Azar just said, as far as he know toilet paper is not a defense against the virus... ha ha
But it is disturbing how lemming-like human beings can be.

I'm so glad that OP and Posters have not contributed to the shortage and are well stocked with no need to replenish their household supplies.

Today I went to Publix supermarket. It was almost out of food, let alone TP. They had one policeman at the door and one walking the isles. Crazy.

Everything is symbiotic, don’t you know? This is a respiratory disease and so naturally, at some point it will migrate to our bowels! Makes perfect sense, yes? LOL

The average person in the U.S. uses about 100 rolls of toilet paper each year. If most of it came from China, this could be a huge problem because supply chains from that country have been severely disrupted as a result of COVID-19. The U.S., however, imports very little toilet paper – less than 10% in 2017. And most of that comes from Canada and Mexico. The U.S. has been mass producing toilet paper since the late 1800s. And while other industries like shoe manufacturing have fled the country, toilet paper manufacturing has not. Today there are almost 150 U.S. companies making this product. https://theconversation.com/theres-plenty-of-toilet-paper-in-the-us-so-why-are-people-hoarding-it-133300

The author tells us "whenever there is a snowstorm, people similarly hoard toilet paper." Others have noticed the same thing. So what's the rational thing to do when we see another situation that threatens to disrupt supply chains? She says "stores and online retailers are running out of toilet paper", and probably wishes she had stocked up when she had the chance. Unless she is prudent, and always keeps a stockpile of necessities. And even so, it wouldn't hurt to top off that stockpile!

Well, there’s no such thing as a Sears and Roebuck catalog anymore. And corn doesn’t come in for a couple more months ... so no corn cobs! Cloth diapers might be going to make a come back! LOL

I also agree with OP...I can see bread and milk in event of a forecasted blizzard/snowstorm, and I can see hand sanitizer, handi wipes, soap, and face masks, but toilet paper??? Are people thinking we are going to become a Venezuela??? I don't think so....stupidity boggles the mind....

Sorry for the second post but #13 reminded me of a ditty from a long time ago..
In days of old
When Knights were bold
And toilet paper wasn't invented
They wiped their rumps
On old tree stumps
And walked away quite contented..

RE #16:
I heard it differently:
In days of old
When knights were bold
And toilets weren't invented
They left their load
Upon the road
And walked away contented.
Of course, that's life in San FreakSicko nowadays, so there you are...

We are no longer a self sustaining country. How many paper mills have closed in the US ? As someone on the radio said "You could always wash off in the shower" Duh. What is going to be really bad is the people who bought paper towels because they could not find TP You stop it up, you pay for the plumber. What I really want to know is What are the hoarders going to do with batteries and bottled water ?
