Oh, how Americans love to hate hypocrisy!
[Snip] A most frequent target for hypocrisy, naturally, is members of Congress, who as a group routinely earn low job approval ratings from Americans, often in the teens. Now, come to find out, Americans are hypocritical about hypocrisy. Gallup’s just done a new survey. It found that voters, who routinely disapprove of the job those clowns on Capitol Hill are doing, really like the job their own congressman is doing. Fifty-nine percent say

This is rather a dumb observation. Why is it surprising that I approve of MY congressperson that comes from my state and district and probably shares a lot of my values? Meanwhile, I might not share much at all with a Congressperson from California, even a Republican.
If we all saw things the same way, we wouldn't need government at all.

The East and West coasts are almost hopeless. Here in CT, we had 8 years of Democrat Dannel Molloy, the worst Gov in CT history. Raised taxes after he got elected, raised taxed after he got re-elected. You'd think with Trump and the Repubs rising up that people here would be eager for a change. Well we elected another Democrat-who immediately tried to get tolls on the major highways in CT. Ned Lamont first said it was only for trucks, then only for out of staters, then for CT residents-his target all along. It took a huge grassroots effort but the tolls are dead (for now). I can say that I'm NOT pleased with my state Reps, except for the outnumbered Repubs who at least try to keep the Dems from taxing us to death.

Garbage. 59% can’t even name their Congressman. Would bet the house that less than 10% know the number of their district.

That poll question is stupid. Often an additional question is "Do you approve of your congressman?" neutralizes the generic one. Shouldn't bother.
Most of the time, polls measure the effectiveness of media propaganda.

It slays me that congress has an approval rating of, at most, 15% at any given time. That means that, at least, 85% DISapprove of what they are seeing. Yet 90%+ of voters RETURN their guy or girl to office at election time. Until voters don't think so highly of their own judgement and admit that THEIR guy or girl is just as ineffective as all the others...we will continue to have a large group of do-nothings determining the course of our nation.

My congressman, Andre Carson from Indiana inherited the seat from his Grandma. I'm not sure he can spell congress. When she died, a group of local black ministers did all they could to keep him out to no avail. Voting against him, and I do every two years, is futile

The answer is simple. 90% of the Congress persons don't appear on camera most of the time. Look at any talk show line up, and it's always the same people. Most people never see their own Congress rep, or for that matter how their own Congress representative has voted on any particular bill, or how that representative feels about any topic. Other than the election time mailings or the occasional emails from time to time, most voters don't know squat about their Congressman. For all they know, the rep may be doing just the opposite of what they say their doing on an important issue.
