Good riddance to Obama's
'joint employer' rule

For all their triumphalist talk of ascendant demography and permanent majorities, Democrats have never really come to terms with the slow death of the labor movement. Unions have never been less relevant than they are today in the modern economy. Where they have not been obviated by workplace health and safety rules, they are being left behind in the race away from traditional employment to the so-called “gig economy.” Hence the recent attempts by various liberal state legislatures to block economic progress by making contract work, including that of freelance journalists, impossible. Hence also the many attempts by the Obama administration to slow the bleeding

"By working so hard to put the brakes on the labor economy, Obama made Trump’s job too easy." While true in terms of action required, it was an enormous act of political will because it will tick off the unions. Probably not that much but it will be in the mix. What mix? That Trump, by sparking more good jobs and rising wages, has been enormously good for labor. Plus, most members are keeping more of their money from Trump's tax cuts. The members of the unions KNOW it. The union leadership was knee jerk dem. Recent court decisions have greatly weaken the leadership's grip on political control of members and their money. Now that union members have had 3 years to see the benefits of Trump as president, if the union leadership squawks, the members probably won't care much. Plus, if the estimates are right, it will free up $11 billion for wages. "Unions" don't vote. Their members do. They also question their leaderships monolithic support for the dems and Trump has given them a LOT to think about.

On Thursday, constitutional law professor Jonathan Turley said Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) had made a "huge blunder" by insulting the senators who would decide whether or not to convict President Donald Trump. In a follow-up op-ed on Friday, he advised the House Democratic impeachment managers to accept that their case was essentially dead on arrival and to slice their articles of impeachment in half. Only by dropping the "obstruction of Congress" impeachment article can they hope to get the Senate to agree to have witnesses in the trial for the "abuse of power" article. The House impeachment managers "lost this case before it began — not because of the Republican majority
A meaningless tape recording of Trump 0 replies

The latest impeachment related story — a non-story in my view — is about a tape recording in which President Trump (according to reports) instructed associates to fire Marie Yovanovitch, the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine. The recording apparently was made at a dinner party in April 2018 by Igor Fruman, one of Rudy Giuliani’s main Ukraine operatives (along with Lev Parnas). Yovanovitch wasn’t fired until May 2019. Thus, there is less to this story than meets the eye. Nor did much meet the eye to begin with. According to reports, Trump demanded that Yovanovitch be fired after he heard she was bad mouthing the president in Ukraine.

President Donald Trump has succeeded because he has a sense of what normal folks believe about a range of issues. In one area, however, he has gone seriously awry. He constantly subordinates American interests and values to Saudi Arabia, a brutally repressive and aggressive regime that has promoted Islamism and enabled terrorism worldwide. Most recently, the president claimed that Riyadh had “already deposited $1 billion in the bank” for American forces deployed to protect the royals. Other officials said that $500 million so far had been paid. The Pentagon would not confirm any particular amount, but spokeswoman Rebecca Rebarich said, “Discussions are ongoing to formalize a mechanism

The governor of Oklahoma has banned all state-funded travel to California after officials there placed a similar ban on travel to his state. Oklahoma’s Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt, who is in his first term, announced the ban in an executive order on Thursday, barring all non-essential travel by state employees to the Golden State, with exceptions for business recruiting trips, college sports games and trips by schools to participate in out-of-state programs. “Enough is enough,” Stitt said. “If California’s elected officials don’t want public employees traveling to Oklahoma, I am eager to return the gesture on behalf of Oklahoma’s pro-life stance.”

With Bernie Sanders tied up in Washington at President Trump's Senate impeachment trial, a couple of his high-profie supporters filled in for him Friday at a campaign rally in Iowa. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and liberal filmmaker Michael Moore shared the duties for the 2020 presidential candidate in Iowa City. But in her speech closing out the event, Ocasio-Cortez -- who first endorsed Sanders back in October -- never once mentioned his name. The Iowa rally -- in the home city of the University of Iowa -- was held one day after Sanders faced backlash from many Democrats after tweeting support for controversial podcast host Joe Rogan.

Clearly, in their eyes, his election is proof that half of their fellow countrymen should not be allowed to vote.(Snip)Meanwhile, across the pond, the prince of England has the good decency to impeach himself and spare his fellow countrymen all the tedium and stupidity of a rigged-up impeachment show trial.

Perhaps for the first time in many years, politicians are directly competing for black votes. This goes hand-in-hand with signs that black America is no longer monolithically supporting Democrats. For example, President Donald Trump’s approval rating among black Americans is in the mid-30s. Enter Democratic presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg, who just launched his new plan for black America, the Greenwood Initiative, named after a site of both incredible black achievement and pain. Bloomberg, speaking to a mostly white audience of only several hundred in Tulsa, Oklahoma, unveiled his plan’s three points. The plan is a perfect example of the failure of center-left policy concoctions

Imagine you heard that someone got a “direct diploma” from Harvard but didn’t actually have to do four years of papers and tests. The term “veteran” wields a strange talismanic power in American politics today; the military is almost the only institution in American life that has maintained very high favorability ratings over the past 30 years. Invocation of the sacred words “military service” invariably grants a presumed license to make ad hominem arguments: “Oh yeah? What do you know about it? Did you serve?” A military past, regardless of how extensive it was, tends to be seen as a shining jewel on the résumé of a politician.

President Trump on Friday becomes the first U.S. President to attend the annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., a march he previously addressed via video, a march sure to be ignored by the lamestream media or downplayed as a gathering of white supremacists. Since then, Mr Trump has acknowledged that the Americans had been injured, but downplayed their significance. As the drama of Harry and Meghan unfolds, it becomes ever clearer that Harry is not a figure of tragedy, but of self-interested hypocrisy. The prince is not only dull, but the cause of dullness in others, more a figure of betrayal than of sacrifice. The psycho-drama of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is one of spoiled individuals shedding crocodile tears over their fate. In his final speech on January 18, 2020 in London, Harry delivered what was in essence an address about himself, mentioning as always the impact of his mother Diana on him but never mentioning his father, Prince Charles, who has been financing him.
