A top British official condemned Saturday’s arrest of the U.K. ambassador to Iran during anti-government protests in Tehran, calling the detainment “a flagrant violation of international law.” Rob Macaire, who has been Britain’s envoy to the Islamic republic since March 2018, was arrested as he stopped at a barber shop for a haircut after attending a vigil for the victims of a Ukrainian jetliner that crashed in Tehran last week, the BBC reported. Macaire left the vigil after it became a demonstration but was later accused by Iranian authorities of helping to incite the anti-government protest, The Independent of Britain reported. He was released after three hours but the arrest infuriated

Comments:

The Iranians are afraid to take on President Trump right now, so they go after our "older" brother and then let him go. Let's see what happens.

As anti-government protests swept Iran in the aftermath of the downing of a Ukrainian plane, students from Tehran avoided walking on massive American and Israel flags placed on the road in front of them. (Tweet) Videos circulated on social media showed Iranian students parting as they approached the large flags, taking pains to avoid stepping on them. A few people who did walk over the flags were booed by protesters in the area with chants of "Shame on you." Some reports said that the protesters near the flags chanted "Our enemy is in Iran, not America." (Tweet) Hillel Neuer, the executive director of NGO UN Watch, tweeted in response

Kandahar, Afghanistan - A roadside bomb hit a convoy of U.S. troops on Saturday in Afghanistan’s southern province of Kandahar, a NATO spokesman and an Afghan official said, but there were no immediate details of casualties in a blast claimed by the Taliban. A senior Afghan military official in Kandahar said the incident took place in the district of Dand when the device hit one of the armoured vehicles of the U.S. forces. Foreign troops cordoned off the area and kept Afghan forces away from the scene, the official added. The NATO spokesman said it was assessing the situation but declined to give details. A New York high school student can put “planet discovery” on his resume after finding a new world during his NASA internship. Wolf Cukier was working at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland last summer when he uncovered TOI 1338 b — a planet orbiting two stars instead of one — while examining information captured by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), according to a release from the space agency. “I was looking through the data for everything the volunteers had flagged as an eclipsing binary, a system where two stars circle around each other and from our view eclipse each other every orbit,” Cukier, 17, said in a statement.

Donald Trump has sent a 'happy birthday' message to North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. Chung Eui-yong, South Korea's national security adviser, said Trump gave him the message to pass along to Kim during a meeting in Washington on Wednesday. Chung told South Korean media that Trump wanted President Moon Jae-in to relay the message, and believes it was delivered the next day. Chung did not reveal the exact contents of the message, and did not say how it was received by the North Koreans. Kim's birthday is on January 8, and he is thought to have turned 36 years old. Rep. Jody Hice said the most crucial principle to remember about America is that here, in this country, individual rights come from God, not the government, and that deviating from this path leads to cultural degradation, Big Government, socialism and, ultimately, utter governmental and societal collapse. He’s right, you know. The Republican from Georgia nailed it. “The more we kick God out,” Hice said, in an interview with The Washington Times for the podcast “Bold and Blunt,” the more frequently, the more habitually — the more frustratingly — “we see more and more intrusive government at the same time.” Hello socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Doctors and other healthcare practitioners who write prescriptions bear ultimate responsibility for improper distribution of opioids to patients, not pharmacists who are obliged to fill those prescriptions, a series of pharmacy chains argued in federal court. The filings, which were submitted Monday to the federal judge in Cleveland who has been overseeing the national opioid lawsuits, asked the judge to rule in the pharmacies' favor and reject claims brought by some Ohio counties. The counties, including Summit and Cuyahoga, have sued CVS, Rite Aide and Walgreens, claiming they are party to blame for the addictions and overdoses among their citizens because they filled 'excessive' prescriptions.

The Ukrainian flight that crashed just outside the Iranian capital of Tehran was struck by an anti-aircraft missile system, a Pentagon official, a senior U.S. intelligence official and an Iraqi intelligence official told Newsweek. Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752, a Boeing 737–800 en route from Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airpot to Kyiv's Boryspil International Airport, stopped transmitting data Tuesday just minutes after takeoff and not long after Iran launched missiles at military bases housing U.S. and allied forces in neighboring Iraq. The aircraft is believed to have been struck by a Russia-built Tor-M1 surface-to-air missile system, known to NATO as Gauntlet, the three officials told Newsweek.

Washington - The White House on Thursday introduced major changes to the nation’s benchmark environmental protection law, moving to ease approval of major energy and infrastructure projects without detailed environmental review or consideration of climate change. Many of the changes to the law — the 50-year-old National Environmental Policy Act, a landmark measure that touches nearly every significant construction project in the country — had been long sought by the oil and gas industry as well as trade unions, which have argued that the review process is lengthy, cumbersome and used by environmental activists to drag out legal disputes and kill infrastructure projects.

Hollywood celebrity is tough to shuck, at least for Meghan Markle, last seen in a starring role as Duchess of Sussex. Instead of marveling at her fairy tale ending with her marriage to Prince Harry in the U.K., she's made it clear she wants to go back to the Hollywood celebrity circuit, that "b" list group that makes loud leftwing noises to get attention -- and movie roles. Harry can come along for the ride if he wants, but he's probably going to get chewed up and spat out in the long run. She'll dump him when he gets inconvenient. Harry and Meghan don’t know how good they have it. They want to bust out of their gilded cage and roam free, but they’re so naive they’re like fluffy kitties who have never crossed a busy road before and are likely to get squashed if they try. A key motivation to the shocking Megxit announcement this week — even as the Queen warned Meghan and Prince Ginger Whiskers against going public with their moronic plan — was their fury with the media. They hate the “Royal Rota” system, in which a designated royal reporter and photographer cover their events as representatives of the entire media and the royals

For most of the twenty-first century, the world’s oldest surviving democracy has been led by a chief executive who received fewer votes than his opponent in an election for the position. The first of these executives started a war based on false pretenses that killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. The second — a serial abuser of women who hired as his campaign manager a lobbyist for violent dictatorships - authorized an immigration policy that forcibly separated migrant children from their families and indefinitely detained them in facilities described as “concentration camps.” Democracy, as they say, is messy.

The New Jersey Democrat's announcement came a day before six presidential candidates will participate in the CNN/Des Moines Register's debate in Des Moines, Iowa. He did not qualify for the event. It also came as the Senate gears up for the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
