A passenger plane bound for the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, has crashed a few minutes after taking off from Tehran’s main international airport, killing 176 people.
Iran’s Red Crescent said there was no chance of finding survivors, and Pir Hossein Kulivand, an Iranian emergency official, later told state TV all those onboard had been killed.
Victims of the crash included 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans and three Britons, according to Ukraine’s foreign minister, Vadym Prystaiko. Most of the passengers were en route to Kyiv, transiting through there to other destinations.

Coincidence that trigger happy Iran fires a bunch of missiles and a passenger get engine mysteriously catches fire... maybe.
The Iranians have strongly deny it, so...
Suggestion: if you are looking at an international flight that has a layover in Iran, North Korea, Syria, ... etc.
Book a different flight.

Interesting that the Iranians are refusing to hand over the black box.

The timing on this crash is very suspect coming right behind the Iranian ballistic missile attack from Iran against two airbases in Iraq where US forces are based. Since the Iranians obviously expected President Trump to retaliate inside Iran with missiles in the hours after that Iranian attack, so who is to say at this point if some Iranian element did not put a bomb on that aircraft, that is owned by Ukraine, a country currently friendly with the USA, with the thinking that the aircraft would takeoff about the time of the expected American retaliatory counterattack against Iran, with the diabolical Iranians then falsely blaming President Trump and America for shooting down that aircraft.
But when President Trump unpredictably did not immediately attack Iran about the time the aircraft took off, with the bomb still going off causing the aircraft to catch on fire and crash, the Iranians had to fall back and make a butt covering announcement that the aircraft crashed because of mechanical failure before any investigation of the crash was even initiated. Now we are finding out that about half the passengers on that aircraft were Canadian citizens!

An engine fire should not bring down an airplane. Something else happened. Interested in fact that several 737-800s have crashed in the past few years. Possibly Boeing is overdesigning what was a very successful aircraft.

This is what happened in my opinion: The Iranians, fearing a counter-attack from the Americans, thought this was it and shot the plane down by accident. In any case, what the heck were the Ukrainians thinking flying a commercial aircraft out of Tehran during a time like this?

The Canadian's were being evacuated under government order. #8 may be right. Or the plane was struck by an Iranian SAM missile intentionally.

I am glad to see #9 show up.
Here is the Ukraine Airlines’s website. Interesting to read about this airline, which notes that it is a low-fare network airline. The passenger list is also linked here.

Refusing to turn over the black box should be grounds to blockade any air travel in and out of Iran.

I think the odds are very high that the aircraft was shot down by Iranian air defenses. My bet is 90% probability.

Just the fact that the Iranians will not turn over the “black boxes” or flight recorders to the manufacturer of the aircraft, Boeing, or other competent authority able to figure out why the aircraft crashed should be a big indication to anyone about moron level that there was probably gross Iranian malfeasance involved causing that aircraft to crash.
Also by doing that, the Iranians may be essentially hiding some other sort of fault with the aircraft design that could effect other such aircraft flying anywhere in the world, thus putting the lives of many other innocent people at risk. Those are big reasons that no airline should be flying their aircraft to or over Iran.

I suspect the "Canadians" were really Iranians with Canadian passports/citizenship. They were probably trying to get to safer ground closer to Trump.

#13 has it.
They shot this aircraft down, intentionally or by incompetence, and no way in hell will they risk the black box proving that it was shot down.

Interesting comment #16, but AFAIK, Canada does not have any nuclear weapons, never had any.

#18 is correct. Canada is under the protective shield of the U.S., so they spend little on defense. Sort of using the neighbor's wi-fi, I suppose.

Why are we still reliant on recovering 'black boxes' when modern satellite capabilities should easily permit real-time transmittal of the same information to secure storage for review?

About all Canada with their current Prime Minister, who President Trump calls Justin from Canada, can do is hit Iran with a wet noodle. You got to remember both Canada and Ireland have something in common, while Canada is located within the US defensive shield, Ireland is similarly situated within the U.K. defensive shield. That’s why the armed forces of either of those two countries is a high government priority, and are more attuned to peace keeping in third world countries then actually fighting wars these days.
