There is an excellent reason why the media largely are ignoring the bill that President Trump signed on Monday: when voters hear about it, they will want to vote for him out of sheer gratitude.
Simply put, one of the most annoying aspects of life at home, robocalls, are now subject to federal legal sanction. S. 151, the Pallone-Thune TRACED Act (snip) The bill requires voice service providers to develop call authentication technologies.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) shall promulgate rules establishing when a provider may block a voice call based on information provided by the call authentication framework,
If I get a call, and you aren’t in my contact list, it doesn’t get answered. If there isn’t any voicemail left, I block the number. If there is a voicemail, and I don’t know you, that number gets blocked.

Polititians must have started getting robocalls. They didn't do this for us.

Glory Be. Boy, am I looking forward to the disappearance of the robo calls. But, until they in fact disappear, calls on my contact list do not get answered and number gets blocked.

Call me skeptical. How can you prosecute scammers in third world countries where there is no incentive for authorities to stop it? Almost every call comes in from a different number so blocking doesn't help much.
This may work as well as the Do Not Call List.
Kudos to DJT for trying, though.

Get these calls all the time on my cell and land line. Incredible the number of people who want to buy my house. Have they seen my house? Even I wouldn't want to buy it. Kudos to PT. He gave us back our economy, our light bulbs, and our phones. PT gives. The dims want to take. Hope we win in 11 months.

I do hope this policy applies to calls from politicians who are running for office and their campaign committees.

WOW! EVERYONE complains about robocalls. I especially hate the ones that call multiple people at once. The first person to answer gets the line, everyone after is left talking to dead air. That happens almost daily to me. Yes, I have stopped answering them. Blocking numbers doesn't work because they post fake numbers that keep changing. That is what this legislation FINALLY addresses. Such calls are too lucrative for the phone companies to identify on their own. Now the law will force them to and anyone without a "verified" number can be blocked. It will take a few years for this to be completely resolved but at least an end is in sight.
This is a real winner and is the kind of thing that you would expect the big on "consumer protection" dems to have gotten around to while BO was in office but it took Republicans and Trump to get it done. WINNING for We The People.

Don't get too excited #6. I'm sure they have exempted themselves as usual.
These calls got so bad for me (5 to 10 a day sometimes) that I installed a call blocker gadget on my home phone. Now if you are not on the "accepted" list and you are a robot you get a message saying you must dial zero to continue. Since robocalls don't listen or do that, my phone is much much quieter these days.

I got a call this morning, warning me that they're worried that the warranty on my 2000 Chevy Avalanche is about to expire. Still have for the calls about saving my non-existent credit card debt and helping me with my student loan debt. Seems to be a daily occurrence and they're now calling from local numbers. I was voting for PDT anyway, this is just icing on the cake. And, of course, CNN will have to spin this some way, against the President!

I keep it simple. I live in an area with a specific area code. Not the code? I ignore it. I have seen calls coming from Russia, Egypt, Cambodia, and the United States!

FTA: "The bill requires voice service providers to develop call authentication technologies."
Another demonstration of lawmakers' hubris -- the conceited conviction that if they pass a law requiring something, then it will happen.
Just pass a law outlawing disease, disability, disappointment, distress, despair, or death, and we should have Utopia by tomorrow.... (smfh)

Remember that phone number portability totally disconnected area codes from physical locations. A call coming from an area code that used to be SF only could be Cambodia now, and there's no way we can tell. Spammers and robo-callers will find ways to circumvent whatever obstacles we erect to keep them out.
And recall how the Do Not Call list worked pretty well for a few years, until junk callers realized that they vastly outnumbered the resources of those responsible for policing the callers and the lists.

One of my roles is "tech support" for some no longer supported broadcast equipment as well as having to deal with manufacturers, vendors and customers of current projects.
Wish I had the option of not answering.

The strangest thing happened with my phone. Getting calls all day and trying to figure which ones were about medical appointments. One day I answered, only to have someone from another country insist they were willing to pay cash for my house and me screaming "Shut up" while in the middle of a store. I changed my voice mail to say "It's a message line. My house is not for sale and I have insurance" Suddenly, I get very few calls. My lender sold my number and the HOA management company gave my number and address to her investor friends.
