TAMPA — The robber who shot a Brink’s guard and a man who tried to help at a Brandon credit union this month got away with about $120,000 in cash and the driver’s gun, records show. The robber fled with a bag containing the cash after shooting the guard and a good Samaritan during a struggle outside a GTE Financial branch on Dec. 6, according to a search warrant affidavit released Wednesday. The robber, who so far has managed to elude a manhunt, also took the Brink’s driver’s gun, the affidavit states. The same person is also wanted in five bank robberies in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties,

Law enforcement is up against a bank robber who likes to shoot people, bringing to mind the 1985-1986 duo of militarily trained bank and armored car robbers that plagued south Miami until the apocalyptic gunfight with eight FBI agents on 11 April 1986, two of whom were murdered and seven of whom were wounded, three very seriously. Here's the FBI's 41-minute documentary. (The .40 S&W caliber, created in 1990, [and, derivatively, its sister cartridge from 1994, the .357 Sig, firing a 9mm bullet--actual diameter 0.355--from a necked down 10mm cartridge] was one direct result of this shootout.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pE4XI1dNWk&t=310s

God bless Samaritans. But they enter the danger zone when they involve themselves in others' quarrels. In a John Murphy concealed carry seminar I saw a video of a mixed pair--man and woman--of shooters intent on ultimate evil who entered a Wal-Mart, and the man fired a round into the ceiling, getting everyone's attention. About sixty feet behind the male shooter, a Samaritan with concealed carry permit and a pistol drew his weapon and prepared to advance on the shooter. The next second he took a fatal round to the back that went through his heart. What happened? The female shooter was covering the male shooter's back door, saw the Samaritan a few feet away, facing away from her, and she killed him. Just that fast. As British football star of Tottenham Hotspur, Danny Blanchflower, liked to say, "Good thought, poor execution."

By 2017 it was obvious that the 20th century institutions were reeling under the impact of the information revolution. The old hierarchies and the authority they had wielded from prestige, authority and celebrity were, if not in a state of collapse, at least badly degraded. The leak of secrets showed how incompetent and mendacious the elites were and the MeToo and Jeffrey Epstein affairs demonstrated how venal. The last redoubt of establishment legitimacy rested on the claim that it was democratic, protected individual rights against the power of the police; kept the secrets of the ordinary people from any would-be STASI and that the Will of the People

Maybe we should be afraid of the growing level of political incivility. The Hill quotes president Trump as suggesting that what comes around goes around. "And I tell you what, someday there will be a Democrat president and there will be a Republican House, and I suspect they're going to remember it," Trump said. Rep. Will Hurd put it more prosaically. Politico says "the Texas Republican is concerned impeachment will be used as a weapon against future presidents, just like voting on new Supreme Court justices." Call it the Harry Reid effect, after the former Democratic Senator majority leader who devised a way of ramming measures

WASHINGTON — House Democrats laid out their impeachment case against President Donald Trump on Monday, a sweeping report accusing him of betraying the nation and deserving to be ousted, as key lawmakers began to signal where they stand ahead of this week’s landmark votes. What Democrats once hoped would be a bipartisan act — only the third time in U.S. history the House will be voting to impeach a president — is now on track to be a starkly partisan roll call Wednesday. No Republicans are breaking with the president, and almost all Democrats are expected to approve the charges against him. A raucous town hall Monday in the

The decisive defeat of the British Labour party strongly suggests that a fundamental shift in the politics of the world has taken place — that the non-ideological wave of unrest sweeping the world really has deeper roots than Donald Trump or Fox News. Glenn Simpson and Peter Fritsch, the founders of Fusion GPS, tried to blame the fall of Labour on Putin. "Britain needs its own Mueller report: a full, independent and public accounting of Russian efforts to interfere in its politics. Few people will look forward to this process in a country already exhausted from fighting over Brexit. But it’s essential to halt Russia’s attack

A Florida man, found eaten by an alligator this summer, died from a meth overdose before his body was ripped apart by the reptile, according to a medical examiner's findings. Michael Ford, 45, was found face down in a canal in Fort Meade on June 27 and Polk County Sheriff's investigators theorized he might have drowned before an alligator began eating the man's remains, NBC News reported. A hand and a foot belonging to Ford was found in the beast's stomach.

BROOKSVILLE — By the time they arrived in Hernando County, the burglars had refined their methods. Michael Ornelas, 56, was a locksmith and expert safe cracker, investigators would later say, while William Granims, 57, knew how to monitor police radios, and Matthew Petruccelli, 67, served as lookout. Ornelas and Granims had worked together a long time. In the late 1990s, they stole more than a million dollars of jewelry and money from stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. They got caught. They did time. They got out. They moved to Florida. From 2011 to 2012, they hit four stores, authorities say. More in the next couple of years.

The impeachment proceedings being prepared by the Democrats in Congress and the Trump administration efforts to portray it as a coup may together produce an allergic reaction more lethal than the disease each professes to cure. To senior Democrat Adam Schiff, the removal of Donald Trump is too important to be left to the 2020 ballot box. "The argument 'Why don't you just wait?' amounts to this: 'Why don't you just let him cheat in one more election?'" The current US political crisis, whichever side prevails, raises the question of whether any outsider can ever be legitimately elected again if the candidate must

Actress Kristy Swanson -- who became famous for her role as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" -- is one of the most vocal and popular MAGA stars out there. Every day, she takes to Twitter to defend President Trump and take on his most ardent critics -- especially those living in Hollywood. Fellow actress Alyssa Milano is, politically, the exact opposite of Swanson: she truly hates Trump. Day after day, Milano shares tweets and videos in which she accuses Trump of the vilest possible crimes and vices. Where Swanson is beloved by the right, Milano is the left's Hollywood darling. Aside from their political ideas, there's another major difference

Nineteen of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudi Arabian nationals, and most came to the U.S. for flight training. Three hijacker-pilots, Mohamed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi, and Ziad Jarrah flew to south Florida for fight training about a year before the horrific September 11, 2001 attacks. Lawyers close to President Donald Trump are exploring whether House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to temporarily withhold articles of impeachment from the Senate could mean that the president hasn’t actually been impeached. The case is a rhetorical one following Wednesday night’s vote to impeach the president on two articles. The U.S. Constitution grants the House of Representatives full authority over impeachment. But the argument is part of an effort by the White House and Senate Republicans to maximize their leverage as lawmakers debate when and how to conduct a trial on charges that the president abused his power to solicit an investigation into political rival Joe Biden,
