Nixon’s Resignation Reconsidered

Original Article

Richard Nixon resigned 45 years ago, on August 9, 1974, in the face of certain impeachment by the House of Representatives and probable conviction following a Senate trial. It also seems that he did so to spare the nation further agony from the Watergate scandal. While two other presidents have been impeached and stood trial in the Senate, neither Andrew Johnson in 1868 nor Bill Clinton in 1998 was convicted. Nixon remains the only living president to have left office before completing his term. There is no question that Nixon was on the ropes and that his voluntary departure helped heal a badly wounded nation,

If Nixon had had the internet to fact check the WaPoo, I think he would not have resigned. One of the reasons the media is so frustrated right now. They want to go back to these heady days, where they had the power of political life or death for politicians, and the voters could not stop it. They complain on the Left that we want to take the nation backwards, but it is the Left who wants to do that for real. They mourn the loss of their power.

Once Nixon realized that Mark Felt, the #2 guy at the FBI, had conspired against him to remove him from office (and cancel the 1972 landslide election), he understood that they'd probably shoot him before he could mount a defense. He walked away from the job, along with his safe holding his secret slush fund (which was about $15 million). Oh, and he walked away with his life. Note that The Donald now wears even more body armor..... something the Democrats on the discussion threads tease about saying "he's fat".

Nixon could have easily avoided involvement in the Watergate break-in and was stupid to resign. His own guilt in attempting a cover-up was what bit him in the butt.

For those of us that lived through the 1960's election, Vietnam, Watergate --- nothing but lies. Many of us were removed from the center, and never imagined some people could possibly be so evil and corrupt. Alas, nothing we were told was true.

Interesting piece, but his defense of Nixon seems a bit thin. First, he says that the (secret) accusation of paying hush money to Hunt was not proved, and could have been refuted, despite the circumstantial evidence supporting it. But he doesn't say how it would have been refuted. Second, he says the cover-up revealed in the "smoking gun" tape was a different cover-up, not related to Watergate, but nobody realized it at the time. Really? Not even Nixon?

Nixon's resignation gave Democrats and the media a feeling of invincibility and confidence that they could destroy any elected Republican. It's why they are so over the top at Trump. They are ENTITLED to take him down, and he's just not cooperating. They can't even hurt his popularity.

One issue that he left out, unless I missed it. There was never any evidence that Nixon even knew about, let alone authorized or ordered the Watergate break-in. I buy the argument that it was that lying weasel John Dean's operation all the way. Google Maureen Biner

During a question and answer session on NBC’s “Today” show, former vice president and rumored presidential 2020 contender Joe Biden said the hero who stopped the Texas church shooter earlier this month should not have been allowed to carry an AR-15. “With the tragedy that just happened in Texas, how do you justify the Democratic view on gun control when the shooter was stopped by a man who was legally licensed to carry a gun?” a young woman in the audience asked Biden.

BROWNSVILLE, Texas -- Salvador Castillo was yearning for tranquility when he became enchanted by a one-acre homestead close -- but not too close -- to the city, a place where cows graze beneath whispering mesquite trees on the property's edge. Castillo, an Afghanistan war veteran, and his wife bought the home using military benefits and grew their family into their new neighborhood -- about half a mile from a bend in the Rio Grande. They never imagined a border wall could dissect their property someday. But the first letter, stamped with an official government seal, arrived about a year ago. Their neighbors, the Carrascos and Trevinos, got them too.

My tween will never know the sound of me calling her name from another room after the phone rings. She'll never sit on our kitchen floor, refrigerator humming in the background, twisting a cord around her finger while talking to her best friend. I'll get it, He's not here right now, and It's for you are all phrases that are on their way out of the modern domestic vernacular. According to the federal government, the majority of American homes now use cellphones exclusively. “We don't even have a landline anymore,” people began to say proudly as the new millennium progressed. But this came with a quieter, secondary loss—the loss

On Monday, December 9, New Zealand's White Island volcano erupted seemingly without warning. Within two minutes, a violent cloud of steam, ash, and rock—called a pyroclastic density current—tumbled down the volcano’s flank. A cloud of volcanic ash stretched thousands of feet into the sky. At the time the volcano erupted—just after 2:00 p.m. local time—47 tourists were scattered along the crater’s edge and down the volcano’s slopes. At press time, eight people have been confirmed dead, 28 are currently being treated, and nine are missing or presumed dead. Joe Biden Still Can’t Answer Basic
Questions About Hunter and Burisma

When Joe Biden was America’s point man for Ukraine policy, an allegedly corrupt Ukrainian gas company, Burisma, started paying his son Hunter $50,000 a month to sit on its board. By Hunter’s own account — and that of another board member — Hunter would never have been offered this lucrative gig had he not been the son of the U.S. vice-president. There is no evidence that Hunter ever lobbied his father on Burisma’s behalf, and the elder Biden reportedly made life harder for his son’s employer by helping to oust a Ukrainian prosecutor who’d taken a hands-off approach to corruption. But this much is beyond dispute:

As a former U.S. attorney general, I am reluctant to publicly criticize my successors. I respect the office and understand just how tough the job can be. But recently, Attorney General William P. Barr has made a series of public statements and taken actions that are so plainly ideological, so nakedly partisan and so deeply inappropriate for America’s chief law enforcement official that they demand a response from someone who held the same office. Last month, at a Federalist Society event, the attorney general delivered an ode to essentially unbridled executive power, dismissing the authority of the legislative and judicial branches — and the checks

In March 1933, Herman J. Mankiewicz, a respected Hollywood screenwriter and producer, took a leave of absence from Metro Goldwyn Mayer to write a screenplay about Adolf Hitler. The former New York newspaperman, playwright, theater critic, and Algonquin Table habitué was known for his sophistication and irreverent wit. But Mankiewicz was also deeply political, and as he watched the Nazis tighten their stranglehold on Germany, he understood the implications and felt he had to act. Abandoning his usual ironic detachment, he wrote The Mad Dog of Europe in a desperate attempt to awaken the American public to the danger of Hitler’s rise to power. ie

Harvey Weinstein’s bail was increased from $1 million to $5 million on Wednesday over allegations he violated bail conditions by mishandling his electronic ankle monitor. But Judge James Burke rejected prosecution calls to put the disgraced movie mogul in jail over the alleged violation. Weinstein, 67, arrived at court in the morning using a walker, and his lawyer said he will be undergoing back surgery on Thursday. In his last court appearance, he hobbled into court and looked more pained than usual. On Wednesday, Burke warned that he would revoke his bail and issue a warrant for his arrest if other issues crop up.

The analysis of the report by Justice Department inspector general Michael Horowitz greatly depends, as is often the case, on which cable news channel you watch. Indeed, many people might be excused for concluding that Horowitz spent 476 pages to primarily conclude one thing, which is that the Justice Department acted within its guidelines in starting its investigation into the 2016 campaign of President Trump. Horowitz did say that the original decision to investigate was within the discretionary standard of the Justice Department. That standard for the predication of an investigation is low, simply requiring “articulable facts.” He said that, since this is a low discretionary standard,

ExxonMobil won a first-of-its-kind climate change fraud trial on Tuesday, as a judge rejected the state of New York's claim that the oil and gas giant misled investors in accounting for the financial risks of global warming. New York Supreme Court Justice Barry Ostrager said the state failed to prove that Exxon violated the Martin Act, a broad state law that does not require proof of intent of shareholder fraud. “The office of the Attorney General failed to prove, by a preponderance of the evidence, that ExxonMobil made any material misstatements or omissions about its practices and procedures that misled any reasonable investor,”

Begin with the premise that there’s no good way for presidential candidate Joe Biden to address the issues that arose from his son Hunter’s work for Burisma Holdings. The former vice president isn’t going to throw his son under the bus, and Hunter can’t resign from his position as a Biden offspring. In mid-October, Hunter Biden did a defiant television interview, declaring he had “no regrets” about anything he did with Burisma. Joe Biden can’t contradict his son and admit that Hunter shouldn’t have taken the position on the company board. Wherever you stand on the political spectrum, you have to pity Hunter Biden.

The comedians Bud Abbott and Lou Costello did a routine about baseball that is a cult favorite.
