A family thought thought their home had been ransacked by burglars — but it turns out it was an inside job.
A Cocker Spaniel puppy named Dory trashed the joint while her humans were out shopping, turning the “when the cat’s away” cliché on it’s head. (Snip) That’s when they noticed the “nibble marks” on everything — and realized Dory had quite the afternoon. The 11-month-old pup had emptied the kitchen cupboards and garbage can, littering the home with trash, biscuits, assorted chocolates and cooking utensils. “Dory is just a full-time nutcase who enjoys causing havoc,” Dylan, a 21-year-old medical biochemistry student, told Caters News.

Ah, cute pup! We never had much of an issue with our 3 dogs. Only our first, which we got as a puppy, chewed things a bit—like our wood deck. She used to steal my son’s stuffed animals off his bed but never hurt them, until I bought her one, problem solved. She grew out of it. The last 2 were senior adoptions and they were too old to cause mischief. Our cats cause much more damage...one just chewed through the new prelit Christmas tree lights and my husband is not amused. Son and I warned him it would happen. Things happen with pets—must have patience and a sense of humor about it all. Love them unconditionally.

Cats are lots more destructive because they're acrobats. I had one who knocked an antique clock off the mantle and cost me $600 (more than it was worth) to repair. Another climbed the Christmas tree, got trapped and took a flying leap to the Venetian blinds, breaking them. She also broke several dishes and a butter dish over the years. Not being satisfied with her first Christmas tree adventure, she made a point of undecorating the Christmas tree every year and dragging the ornaments up to my bedroom during the night.

When my husband and I were first married we adopted miniature schnauzer littermate pups. Oh the joys of house breaking two dogs at once! I lost ten pounds.
One time they got hold of a wallet and shredded five hundred dollars in cash. Another time they commandeered a pile of highlighters and colored each other’s faces, their white hair turned to neon pink, green and orange. Oh, and then there was the time they were backing out of the bathroom pulling the end of the toilet paper roll, pushed their bums up against the door and locked themselves in. Their screaming was so loud a neighbor called the police.
Good times! Lord, I miss them. RIP guys. Hope I see you again some day.

These are all the reasons I love and pet other people's dogs, but these behaviors and having to clean up after they do their duty is why I don't have one.

Authorities are blaming the family for watching holiday movies, in particular "A Christmas Story" (the Bumpus hounds) and "Christmas Vacation" (Snots).

We have a year and a half old German Shepherd who hates when we leave him. I don't think he would trash the house, I'm pretty sure he would not, but I put him in his kennel. Never had a single problem.

I had two cats for 20 years and now I have a Chihuahua and none of then ever trashed anything at any time. My Angus the cat could leap up onto a 12 foot x 1 foot mantle and walk across it when it was filled with seasonal decorations plus an antique calendar clock and never move one object. He was a great cat. I loved him dearly. I got him after my husband passed and he helped me get through my grief.

Cats are much more trouble than pups !!! I had a pair of rescue Siamese in San Francisco. Grocery shopping I got a whole chicken at my favorite place where they wrapped everything in butcher's paper. While unloading, somehow those cats go their paws on the chicken and went off with it. When I found them, they were tearing up the paper, having dragged it up the thirteen steps of my Victorian's staircase !!! That's teamwork !!!

That's no Cocker Spaniel. Maybe one parent is a spaniel, but the other is a black lab. Dogs are great with people who know how to take charge of them and manage them properly. In the hands of owners who let them have their way, not so much.
I've had two Springer Spaniels--bird dogs, not house dogs.
