Results of the 2018 Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) found American teens showed no actual improvement in reading, math, and science compared to the 2015 results.
Though the ranking of U.S. students improved among those of other countries, scores were statistically unchanged compared to those from 2015, when the assessment was last conducted. The ranking of U.S. students improved only because the scores of students in other countries dropped.
“In all of these cases, reading, math, and science, other countries’ education systems that were scoring higher than us, are now scoring comparable to us or below us,”

Time to stop indoctrinating and start teaching.

I'm not a bit surprised. Prospective teachers are all indoctrinated that teaching facts is BAD. Only diversity is good - all hail diversity!!

One item of note: These reports about the terrible state of our education always assume the third most populous nation in the world is a monolithic block with one type of student... a dumb one. I'm willing to bet that if your could partition the student body into rural and city, or by ethnic group (especially taking out the kids of illegals who really can't speak English yet), you'd get different numbers. How else do you make sense of numbers for a nation of 330 million people in comparison to, say, Norway which has only 8 million?
I remember during the '94 health care debate (which year was near the height of the crack epidemic and all the murders and injuries THAT caused) our health care system was given a disparaging rating vs 'world' standards. The fact was, if you took the inner city, gang violence, out of the numbers, we wound up 3rd or 4th in the world. Given the fact that we (can) choose to have lifestyle health problems, I thought those numbers were pretty good.
I'm waiting for a report that can be honest about where our education problem is.

So we look better because everyone else is doing more poorly? Far more illustrative is that current US students do worse than did their parents and grandparents on basic measures of educational competence despite (or perhaps because of) having enormous tech advances which in theory should make learning easier.

Houston is the 4th largest city. HISD is a huge district, and had to be taken over by the state, due to corruption and not doing their job. A total disaster. Property taxes are next to the roof top and expanding. What we get in return for all the money is failure, teachers that hate our country, and students brainwashed to hate us and our country, but unable to do anything, like work.

This is exactly what the left wants and is working toward. Without a dumbed down electorate the democrats cease to exist.

Propaganda and indoctrination can only carry you so far - say to the ability of a Community Organizer, say.

Once our students submit to the proclamation that they are all in doubt about their sexuality but are probably leaning the opposite way from their assigned-at-birth gender and the white ones admit that they have been taking advantage both financially, in social status and in career placement and when they admit that diverse and inclusive classes and corporations run circles around the primarily white ones and they accept the fact that there was no Holocaust and the Civil War was secretly fought to kill all blacks or send them all back to Africa so we owe each and every one alive today at least a million dollars and there is no god except for Barack Obama... Only then will they be able to focus on what the liberal academics and government says they should learn.

Public education is failing. There are, of course, still pockets of excellence but for the most part, indoctrination has taken over. Combine that with teachers' unions, dumb students managing to graduate with a degree in education that's dumbed down to make sure the minorities can pass and you end up with lousy teachers and uneducated children. Except for the STEM majors, most of our colleges are graduating poorly educated but indoctrinated men and women who are not capable of getting ahead in the business world and useless to most employers.
