A research scientist believes the US is in the middle of a 'Pig Bomb' - where feral hogs are increasing in huge numbers. Dr. Jack Mayer, a zoologist whose been researching wild pigs for 40 years, has warned that the population could keep growing unless there is a swine flu epidemic. His comments come just a week after a caregiver was mauled to death by wild hogs in Texas. Christine Rollins, 59, was attacked and killed outside the home of the elderly couple she was looking after in what the local sheriff described as 'one of the worst things he has seen'. It's unclear

Comments:

On dark night drives along rural Texas highways, constant alertness is required. Hitting one of those big hogs is like hitting a locomotive. Nobody survives.

Wait! Is this idiot HOPING for a swine flu epidemic? Look, I know wild hogs can be dangerous, but so can rattlesnakes and skunks and copperheads and alligators and . . . . ! This kind of hysteria is STUPID to the max. Yes, please let's eradicate EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM--after all, they're just a food source that keeps on reproducing. Ever heard of wild hog hunts? Or trapping and butchering them? There are ways to deal with this issue--and make a lot of money doing it, but the only thing you ever hear is hysteria and the need to wipe them out completely. It's both short-sighted and utterly stupid.

Both wild hogs and Canadian geese over population are a result of welfare. People used to hunt both of these for food.

We have Javelina out here in Arizona. Granted, they are technically rodents, not hogs and they don't get very large. But, I've seen rather large groups of them in both the Phoenix area and in Tucson of late. I don't recall such large "herds" - or whatever you call a group of javelina - when I was growing up. They are scary when in groups! And they don't like dogs and dogs don't like them. This article makes me think.

There are wild hog hunts going on constantly in Texas, there's a bounty for them in some areas. They are smart and are pretty hard to kill -- and their families are huge. I've sat on a back country road while thirty of them run across in front of me, usually in the morning on my way to work - I have no gun with me. They run through neighborhoods all over, in Houston, Fort Worth -- and you can't use a rifle where houses are so close together because it's just not safe shooting. Sounds easy to kill them all, but it's not. Get your AR-15 and come to Texas and have at them!

FTA: "Authorities said Rollins' cause of death was 'exsanguination due to feral hog assault' or bleeding to death." As the hogs mature they develop the "cutters" on either side of the lower jaw that could and occasionally does inflict fatal injuries on humans. Farmers hate them; a few sounders can wipe out a year's crop production in less than a week, even on a large farm. Mature hogs can easily grow to 400 pounds, occasionally over 1,000 in a few with abundant food and no hunters or trappers to dodge. Texas has the most feral hogs--over two million presently--but they're all over the southern half of the Lower 48, completely blanketing most areas south of the Mason-Dixon Line and spreading most everywhere else. Their population probably exceeds 10,000,000. Hunters must have a hunting license for most indigenous species such as white tail deer, in season. In most states hogs, a non-indigenous, invasive species like the Burmese python, can be hunted 365 days a year without a license. Hunters, unless they're going for one at a time with bow and arrow, don't even refer to shooting them or trapping them as "hunting." The aim is eradication, in whatever numbers you can kill them because they're a physical menace, not only to property but potentially to life. Trapping and shooting are the best methods of eradication. I have seen panoramic--and depressing--videos of literally hundreds of hogs of all ages and sizes strewn across several hundreds of acres of farmland with not nearly enough hunters to shoot them. Each sow can get pregnant at six months of age and have three litters of piglets, ten at a time, per year. Feral hog populations are exploding nationwide. There is now a weekly cable show, JAGER Pro, about trapping hogs (and shooting those who avoid the traps) on RFD Channel. Pretty interesting television. The best way to shoot them, by far, is to hunt at night by thermal scope, employing a group of experienced hunters, perhaps as many as ten shooters in a coordinated line, each armed with a modern sport rifle like an Armalite (AR-10 or AR-15), a Ruger Mini-14. or a semiautomatic Israeli Galil or Kalashnikov (AK), with large capacity magazines of between twenty and forty rounds, still legal in Free America. Machine guns* would be better, but they're mostly illegal. *The last cable television technician to visit here was an Iraqi War veteran whose favorite weapon in Fallujah (and elsewhere) was the M240B aka "240 Bravo," a fully automatic machine gun. A Florida pig hunter in his spare time, the tech said he hunted different pigs in Iraq, but wished that just once he could turn the Bravo loose on a sounder of pigs over here. After several hunters had wiped out a sounder of some twenty fleeing hogs in about twenty seconds of furious shooting, the sounds of gunfire and squealing had ceased, and the hogs lay still and dead on the ground in front of them, one of the shooters remarked, "That was pretty Western."

If only there was a way to match Florida's apex predator, the male Burmese python, with this four-footed apex pack predator as part of a controlled, managed experiment. Chip the snakes so you know where they are at all times and let them gobble up the small ones. Let hunters deal with the adults.

Start paying $50 or $100 per carcass and then butcher them for homeless shelters and soup kitchens. I suspect the problem will go away. I’d be really surprised if it can be done without starting a gargantuan federal feral hog bureaucracy, and similar organizations with good jobs at good wages in each state, but bounties could work.

This is where the AR-15 is an excellent answer to a hard question. Deadly accurate at 400 yards if one is trained and has the correct scope that is zeroed in! The little .223 round is propelled out of the beauty at over 3,200 fps or faster than sound! Hits like a ton of bricks and takes down any problem oikster!

Based on everything we know about the committee’s past oversight efforts, statements by Republican committee members and the president’s defense team, and the details of the panel itself, one thing seems clear: Compared with the staid and productive fact-finding work conducted by the House Intelligence Committee over the past few weeks, this hearing will almost certainly be a disaster.
