Gaffes, lies and missteps — how much
will voters forgive in presidential politics?

Quietly, with little public notice, Americans seem to be changing their standards for judging presidential candidates as people and as potential chief executives, at least the older ones. Gaffes, health issues, behavioral traits do not have the same significance they once did. In fact, such faults and missteps seem to glide right on by voters’ consciousness like a leaf on a stream. And this holds true regardless of party. Examples of such statements or behavior by

I am tired of the repeat of the falsity of the 'Trump grabs women's crotches' story. The context was Trump stating the obvious - some women will throw themselves all over you if you are famous and let you do anything to them'. It was not a confession of what he had in fact actually done. Nor have any of the many, many women Trump has known ever claimed he did such to them. Some writers like to show that they are even handed journalists by writing of both sides of a question but it doesn't help if you repeat a tired lie to claim you are legit.

Hit the road, Joe: Biden tries a
bus tour to salvage Iowa

Looks like Joe Biden is taking the Democratic primary campaign seriously for a change. David Axelrod, who worked closely with the ex-vice president during the Obama administration and both campaigns, says Biden’s handlers have had “him in the candidate-protection program.” 1) He’s old. And 2) You may recall Biden is prone to gaffes, like earlier this fall when he asked an Iowa audience how the infrastructure was holding up there in Ohio. But finally this weekend, 32 weeks after he launched his campaign and just nine weeks before the Iowa caucuses, Biden
Anyone else sick of investigations,

Just gonna lay this right out front: I’m so sick of investigations in public life. Everyone is so busy investigating just about everything these days that they’re not getting their regular work done. In fact, that may be the point of so many inquiries. So busy doing them, they can escape their duties, like I did a few years ago finding chores that required immediate doing to avoid algebra homework. Which, by the way, I’ve

Fall term exam: The mounting number of Republican House members already announcing retirement a year before their next election is a seriously ominous sign for President Donald Trump’s reelection hopes. Or, the unusual number of announced incumbent departures this early is a sign of the encouraging regenerative capacities of our democracy as an upstart president continues draining the notorious Washington swamp. You have 800 words. Discuss. There are, of course, numerous reasons why
This partisan impeachment inquiry is more

Let’s be honest here. These impeachment hearings are a total waste of time. Even as a show trial. Not because President Donald Trump did nothing wrong. Actually, these days that doesn’t really matter anymore, does it? People know they know everything they want to know. This so-called “impeachment inquiry” is a waste of time because most Americans — especially House Democrats — have already made up their minds. Who needs evidence now when the real verdict on Trump won’t come down until
On Iran policy, Donald Trump is following

One of Donald Trump’s major — and accurate — criticisms of Barack Obama was that his predecessor had become predictably soft enforcing foreign policy threats. No matter what he vowed, opponents knew Obama wouldn’t carry them out. [Snip] Trump said it would take time and tough, prolonged follow-through for the next president to rebuild credibility in U.S. foreign policy, especially the threatening parts. Surely aware that any new foreign military engagement would threaten his reelection, almost three years into his first term, Trump is now following pretty much Obama’s path of restraint. If Trump was

The best time of any political campaign is announcement day, so full of sunny promise, hope, optimism and certain success. [Snip] We’re now at the stage where financial and political realities crush the hopes of more. The pace of casualties will increase. Already a third of the overweight field has given up. Most recently, it was Ohio Rep. Tim Ryan. Soon, it will be Julian Castro, then likely Sens. Kamala Harris and Cory Booker. And of course, Robert Francis O’Rourke, who famously

Understanding what the president of the United States is thinking should not be this difficult. [Snip] As you may have noticed, Donald Trump is not only commander-in-chief. He is also his own communications director and in effect his own press secretary. He routinely expands upon and ad libs prepared speeches. The 62,984,828 Americans who voted for Donald Trump 155 weeks ago got pretty much what they wanted — or deserved, depending on your politics. They got an unorthodox chief executive who
It’s the money, stupid: Donors decide to

Turns out, the scramble for political money has become far more decisive in the Democratic primary races than any of their policy papers or tedious TV debates. And in that money contest, former Vice President Joe Biden has also become the former front-runner for 2020. He’s now lagging far behind the new frontrunners: Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and — wait for it — Pete Buttigieg, the fresh-faced Indiana mayor. [Snip] Fresh third-quarter campaign finance reports indicate donors are already picking winners in the still-crowded field. And they’re also picking losers, some of whom may not even make it to the first voting. And then there’s

As if President Donald Trump didn’t face enough trouble of his own making, he announced 10 days ago what appeared to be a peremptory withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria. [Snip] What shocked many was Trump’s cold-hearted abandonment of the Kurdish troops who’d done virtually 100% of the deadly fighting to fulfill his loud campaign vow to crush ISIS, and do it quickly. The U.S. departure leaves another vacuum with ominous implications for the

Crucial trade talks involving hundreds of billions of dollars, global prestige and political fortunes are scheduled to reopen this week between China and the United States. They will close soon after. Nothing much will come of it — again. “This is a trade war, trade battle, call it anything you want,” says President Donald Trump. [Snip] “China would love to make a deal,” Trump claims, as he likes to do with sparse evidence. “We’ll see what happens.” We certainly will. The grand dealmaker won’t admit it, but

The impeachment nightmare that House Democrats are so eagerly plunging the country into now is merely another outbreak of that party’s inability to accept the voters’ verdict of 2016. [Snip] Realistically, neither of these impeachment inquiries will accomplish anything. That is, beyond drowning out other attempts at newsmaking to impress voters. And they will allow Washington’s cast of characters on both sides to perform their standard political theater for countless weeks while shirking their day jobs. No wonder the national job approval rating for Congress is barely a third of that for the president it seeks to oust

It’s one of the questions you’re not supposed to ask in public but everyone talks about in private: What’s going on with Matt Drudge? For conservatives, the Drudge Report was a one-stop shop for news on the Internet starting in the late 1990s. When Matt first broke the scandal involving the President of the United States and an intern, his place at the top of alternative media, as it was called then, was secured. As always, imitators followed. But none came close to combing as many news outlets and boiling down the essence of stories like Drudge. That was his magic – he’d plow through stories and

A viral video published by Deseret Sun photojournalist J. Omar Ornelas shows two men using a ladder to defeat the replacement border fence that President Donald Trump said “can’t be climbed.” In September, Trump visited the Otay Mesa border site to extol the virtues of the replacement barrier that’s being installed there, and went on an extended riff about how difficult the fence would be to climb. Trump said the wall had been tested by “world-class mountain climbers,” and referenced “pictures of young people climbing walls with drugs on their back--a lot of drugs.”

His comments come just a week after a caregiver was mauled to death by wild hogs in Texas. California Sen. Kamala Harris should never have run for president in the first place. Her ambition far exceeded her ability. She hadn’t yet established herself in the U.S. Senate. And she hadn’t exactly excelled in her previous job as California’s attorney general. There wasn’t much of a record worth bragging about on the campaign trail. After being elected to the Senate in a 2016 cakewalk, she should have spent the next three years focused exclusively on representing Californians in Congress, helping the state on such vital issues as water development, environmental protection, healthcare and homelessness. But people around her — political advisors and her sister Maya Harris

According to a report Tuesday in Out magazine, the South Bend mayor has several times participated in Red Kettle Ring Off for the Christmas season in the Indiana city. Out linked to reports of the annual charity in local South Bend media from 2015 and 2017, and at least one other photo from 2016 surfaced on Twitter. In 2018, he held the annual Mayor’s Night Out — an open-listening event to let residents quiz city officials — at a Salvation Army community center.

George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who was acquitted in the 2012 fatal shooting of unarmed black teen Trayvon Martin, is suing Martin's family and Florida prosecutors, claiming that they engineered false evidence in the homicide trial. The lawsuit to be filed Wednesday in Polk County Circuit Court seeks $100million in civil damages for defamation, abuse of civil process and conspiracy. It alleges that the prosecution's key witness in Zimmerman's 2013 murder trial, Rachel Jeantel, was an imposter coached by the family and their lawyers.
