Police officers for the San Francisco Bay Area commuter train system disproportionately target black riders with citations for eating and drinking, according to new data that has renewed concerns about racial profiling.
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (Bart) data was released following a viral video showing police handcuffing a 31-year-old black man who was cited for eating a breakfast sandwich on his way to work. The new records show that more than 81% of people who have been stopped for eating and drinking on Bart since 2014 were people of color, and that the vast majority of them were black.

96% of actual offenders are 'black' ('of color'.... whatever)
81% of those cited are 'black'
I would say 'blacks' are treated differently - - as usual, the are given a pass

The article says they are cited when they fail to comply with the train personnel’s polite requests to put their food away.

A real investigator would go out and see for themselves who is actually doing what and report that.

FTA: "Of 55 people cited for this offense over the last five years, 33 were black passengers, representing 60% of the citations." If there's discrimination, I oppose it, but if you have to go back five years to find this stat, when BART ridership is 125,000,000 passengers per year, I must be missing something. (BART stats on the site: data is called "Annual Exits".

White people are scared to death of riding BART, so most don't. The author knows it, but wants to do a hit piece. Try honesty. It would be new to you.

Oh no, you can poop and pee and drop used needles on the streets of San Fran, but by God, don't eat a breakfast sandwich or anything else....these people are ALL brain dead...

I ride BART occasionally (about 1-2 times per month), and my empirical observations is that most people aboard these trains smoking dope, drinking alcohol, jumping fare gates, etc. are non-caucasian.
This is not a scientific sample, but just my observations.

So what are the numbers of blacks, whites, hispanics, illegals and other races that ride the train. If ther are far more whites than blacks, this might be a clue. But if not, well, another prevarication by the Kneepads.

Eating a breakfast sandwich on a commuter train while riding to work is a crime? How about putting on make-up or texting or reading a book? Ban everything and the fine monies will be rolling in.

Wrong interpretation. My bet is that whites are more likely to follow the rules posted and therefore not get crosswise with the law. Blacks more often have an attitude of "rules don't apply to me" or "catch me if you can", "too cool for rools".
But, it's the Guardian, a leftist rag, not to be trusted.

The alternate and probably more likely truth is that Whites have better manners.
The disproportion also extends to speeding, fighting, drinking, talking loud in public, shoplifting, foul language and woman beating. We sure don't treat those folks fairly, do we?

#10's got it. One must compare the percentage of offenders vs. the percentage of riders for each race. If 81% of the ridership is people of color, then that's would you should expect. As usual. journalists don't understand numbers - probably why they're journalists!

Ah, BART... only 2 types of people ride BART: workers with no other option to get to work and scumbags. The system is filthy, depressing, slow, runs off schedule regularly and charges too much. Commuters who need public transit take the Cal Train and then Uber to work. Everyone else drives or is stuck on BART.
I've seen countless people eating on BART, leaving their trash behind, spilling drinks, soiling seats, mucking up the floors, etc. The numbers of people cited are ridiculously small given how much eating and spilling is going on. It is certainly not an effect of racism.
The article was written because some Guardian writer was on dead line and needed to generate some column inches so they tossed this silly bit out there.

55 citations in 5 years = 11 people on avg. per year = much ado about nothing. A poster above tells a different story about food spillage, wrappers, etc., and no police notice. It seems as if there is a whole lot of very casual observances, if the poster is right (and I don't doubt it) then cameras should be installed to catch the miscreants.

I ride BART several times a week. I would guess 90% or more of the riders who eat are black or Hispanic. No, it usually isn't fast food. It's usually a bag of chips or occasionally Chinese take out. Now, if you count people drinking tea or coffee out of a travel mug also, then the ratios of people eating or drinking by race is roughly the same, especially on a weekday morning.
I also travel on Amtrak regularly. Ironically, even though Amtrak allows food, and even sells food on the trains, the trains are far cleaner than BART trains. I suspect it's because Amtrak is a lot more expensive and BART is free for the fare jumpers, who tend to eat on the trains a lot. Amtrak keeps out the riff raff.

And who made a law that says you can't eat something ? Let me see …. Oh, this is San Francisco where you can S### in the street but you'd better not eat. And they wonder why we vote against Democrats ??

Silly white newspaper people. Don't you know that rules and laws don't apply to inner city non white people. It's racist to think they would.

Perhaps only 9 of those actually doing it were white? When asked to stop, did they? Statistics without context are just convenient lies. What exactly are the numbers of whites riding BART as opposed to minority?
