Settlements and the Smelling-Salts Brigade

The remarkable decision by the State Department to declare that Israeli settlements on the disputed territories of the West Bank are not inherently illegal or illegitimate has already occasioned the bringing-out of the foreign policy smelling salts. The New York Times’s news story instantly declared that this might “doom any peace efforts with Palestinians,” as though there are any peace efforts with the Palestinians to doom right now or in the foreseeable future. The decade-long withdrawal of the Palestinians from any realistic effort to forge a future for themselves in a land they might take as a state—following a decade of specious pseudo-negotiations torpedoed by Palestinians when and if

If he wasn't such a weasel, Podheretz might recognize that the State Department didn't change their policy, and the State Department 'DIDN'T DECLARE..." PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP, who is responsible for setting all foreign policy, made this declaration. The declaration just came out of the State Department. So, give credit where credit is due--to Donald Trump. Of course, NeverTrumper Podheritz is such a small, petty man that he can't bring himself to recognize that all this is Donald Trump's doing.

The Palestinians should contract themselves out as fireworks technicians to cities in the US since that seems to be the only talent that they possess. When treaties and agreements are made between parties, each party must contribute something to the process. The Israelis have been conceding territory, financing aid and suffering the tantrums of Palestinians led by Hamas terrorists for decades. There will never be peace with them and all efforts are futile. That is not pessimism that is reality.

Problem With Mayor Pete’s Momentum

Pete-mentum is real. Two polls within four days certified the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, as the new front-runner in Iowa. Which is good news for the Buttigieg campaign, coming less than three months before the caucuses, even if the pool of undecideds remains large. “There’s a ton of folks who haven’t made up their minds,” says Charlie Wishman, an Iowa labor union official. “Check the [Des Moines] *Register&’s poll the weekend before the caucus, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what’s really happening.” Mayor Pete’s rise also comes with a more immediate downside.

There's a bet to be placed that most people would want to hear more from former Vice President Joe Biden in the 2020 Democratic presidential debates than any other candidate. I would take it, but the problem is that Biden is scared. At the debate on Wednesday night, he didn't talk more than he was allowed. He never asked for more time. He never asked to respond to any particular candidate. He's afraid. Up until now, he's sat back comfortable that he's the rightful front-runner — he was the first black president's No. 2 — but we're about two months away from the first contest of the race.

Democratic presidential candidate Deval Patrick was forced to cancel a campaign event Wednesday night after only two people showed up. Patrick, who entered the primary field too late to qualify for the MSNBC debate in Atlanta, was scheduled to speak across town at a campaign event at Morehouse College, a historically black university. He cancelled the event after only two students showed up, according to CNN reporter Annie Grayer. "Governor @DevalPatrick was supposed to have an event at Morehouse College tonight," Grayer reported. "An organizer with the college who planned the event told CNN that Patrick cancelled the event when he arrived and learned that he would

Under pressure, Elizabeth Warren has retreated from the idea of immediate implementation of Medicare for All, but she remains committed to the progressive core of her candidacy. As she put it in a speech to Iowa Democrats on Nov. 1: If we’re going to meet the challenges of our time, we need big ideas. Big ideas to inspire people and get them out to caucus and get them out to vote. Big ideas to be the lifeblood of our party and show the world who and what Democrats will fight for. In rhetoric that drew enthusiastic applause from her supporters at the Liberty and Justice Dinner in Des Moines,

One thing that will quite possibly be achieved by the nonsensical impeachment investigation being conducted in the House of Representatives is the end of the extreme criminalization of policy differences. Andrew Johnson was impeached in 1868 (an election year in which he would not be nominated) for firing the secretary of war for insubordination, because the majority in the Congress, with not all the Southerners reinstated and Johnson a Tennessean whom Abraham Lincoln had chosen to run with him to emphasize national unity, resented Johnson’s conciliatory approach to the South. Johnson survived the outrageous allegations against him by one Senate vote, and he became (again by one vote in Tennessee),

Your fearless debate correspondent here, to tell you that once again, you missed nothing. And by nothing, I mean an empty cavernous negative space of dark matter where all intelligence, vitality, and humanity gets sucked into an endless void. You are smarter for missing this misery. Who are these Democrats trying to appeal to? Who is the constituency for their insanity? I really want to know. These are not serious people. It might not be that they’re not people at all, just ten robots put on a stage and talking word salad as placeholders. None of them act like they can beat Trump. Do they even want to?

“Operation Crossfire Hurricane,” the FBI’s code name for its investigation into Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia, blew through the United States in 2016 and did more damage to our national security institutions than any real hurricane could. The upcoming report from the Department of Justice’s Inspector General may well conclude that high-level Obama Justice Department and FBI officials knowingly lied to obtain top-secret surveillance warrants that were originally designed to target foreign spies and terrorists, and used them to monitor a U.S. citizen whose only crime appears to have been acting as an adviser to the Trump campaign.

I still remember watching Colin Kaepernick play in the Kraft Bowl which solidified him as the greatest player in the history of the University of Nevada football. His playing style was captivating, as he became the only player in NCAA history to pass for over 10,000 yards and rush for over 4,000 yards in their college career He didn’t waste any time establishing his NFL career either as he led the San Francisco 49ers to the Super Bowl in his second season. Thank goodness the Duncan, Oklahoma Walmart is not a “gun-free zone.” Because an armed citizen happened to be doing his shopping Monday morning and spotted a gunman shooting, victim fatalities were limited to two people. Immediately after, it is reported that an armed citizen, who was in the immediate area, drew his gun and put it to the head of the suspect and told him to stop shooting.

In the interest of full disclosure, I loved the 1970's Charlie's Angels. The show was about three women who were women first rather than political activists sending messages about this or that. Over the weekend, a new version came out, and it did not do very well, according to early accounts: "Charlie's Angels" ... wasn't able to entice its core audience of younger females and arrived well behind domestic box office projections (the studio was anticipating a start closer to $13 million). Though co-financing partners will help offset any potential losses for Sony, "Charlie's Angels" will now rely on overseas audiences to help recoup its $48 million production budget.

Rep. That inquiry is focusing on an alleged quid pro quo between President Trump and Ukraine linking military aid and White House access to Ukraine probes beneficial to Trump.

California's largest power utility began shutting off power Wednesday to hundreds of thousands of people in 18 northern and central counties in the state as the region faces extreme fire weather that has lasted since October. Up to 450,000 people could be affected by the outage, according to the LA Times. A virtually rainless fall has left brush bone-dry and forecasts called for low humidity and winds gusting at times to 55 mph. The conditions have raised fears that tree branches or other debris could fall on to power lines, causing sparks that may set off catastrophic fires in the region,
