Never Trump Republicanism isn't quite dead, but it sure is getting close.
Ever since President Trump burst onto the political scene and quickly shot to the top of the polls months from the start of the 2016 primary season, mainstream Republican politicians and pundits have been forced to respond. First there was dismissal and condescension. Then, once the voting began, there was concern mixed with certainty that Trump's support would soon collapse. This was followed by panic when it didn't.
By the summer of 2016, the institutional GOP was deeply divided between those who favored rallying around the unorthodox nominee and others who favored sabotage —

Don't waste your time reading this article. It could have been written by Jonah or Kristol or Will or Romney or any other Never Trumper. I wish I had my time back.

They either get with the Trump program or wander forever as exiles, unwanted by either party. Unless they really, really want to be Democrats.

Just like the overly confident bully at school, the Never Trumpers picked on the wrong kid. Now their noses are all bloodied.

I don't know Damon Linker from a pot-hole but, I wonder how many deplorables he has actually talked to in his life. Maybe Damon, millions and millions of Americans are totally sick and tired of the CORRUPTION that has been going on in DC for decades, of the destruction of our country, of the lies told by the so-called "media" and the Rat party.
Maybe they're tired of seeing people go to Washington and within a few years...VIOLA...They're millionaires. Maybe they're sick and tired of the leftwing politicians sucking up to every despot, tin-horn dictator, thug, commie and socialist that comes down the pike.
Maye WE WANT OUR COUNTRY BACK!

Nope, not buying it. I saw these vermin play at the Tea Party game. What did they do with Obamacare when they had a majority in both branches of Congress? Where's the balanced budget, what's happened to the national debt? Make no mistake, this is a tactical withdrawal, they are still slow trot socialists.

FTA: The party they once knew and loved, the party that I once admired is dead and gone, replaced by a party whose voters strongly overwhelmingly support the presidency of Donald Trump.
That's right Linker. Finally the Republican party is woke and overwhelmingly support a winner who believes in America First and is proving it with results.

FTA: "The party they once knew and loved, the party that I once admired (while also dissenting from it in numerous areas of policy), is dead and gone, replaced by a party whose voters strongly, overwhelmingly support the presidency of Donald Trump."
I have been an active Republican since 1972, first working on the Nixon campaign. I was not a supporter of PDT from the time he rode down on his golden escalator. Frankly, I expected him to be gone in fairly short order. Then he amazed me with his raw, effective political communications skills. He drew in bold colors. He spoke in "Hell, yeah" phrases. He stood for something. Despite all the hard times, he has delivered.
The Republican party has exposed itself as a "conservative" partner to the "moderate Democrats" as the UNIPARTY. This very real collusion for profit is an existential threat to our nation, our republic, and must be rooted out. I stand with Trump.

He's right about one thing: The party 'he knew and loved and grew up with' is gone.
And well it should be. It couldn't defend this country or economy or people or.... the Law.
I like PDJT better. And if he wants to call himself a Republican... well, I guess we have a new Republican party. It isn't as if we haven't been threatening the cruise ship and country club Republicans with this for the last 20 years or so.

Much as I have stopped holding my breath waiting for IG Horowitz to issue his report, I have no expectation that Jonah Goldberg, Peggy Noonan, George Will, et al., will ever see the light and stop undermining Trump and the wishes of Republican voters. In science, revolutionary ideas are often hindered by disagreement from the current powers that be and more general acceptance in the scientific community is often delayed until the opposition leaves by way of death.

#1 is correct, but at list this (apparently former) NeverTrumper author has figured out that 89 percent support of Trump in the GOP means that the NeverTrumpers have LOST.
FTA:
"Jonah Goldberg, Michael Gerson, and George F. Will could talk the ghost of Ronald Reagan himself into challenging Trump in 2020, and Trump would trounce him.
The sooner the remaining Never Trumpers accept this, the sooner they'll stop indulging in fantasies and start putting their talents and commendable moral revulsion at the president and state of the party to more productive use."
Yes, I agree. And this guy doesn't seem too happy with it, but he is smarter than the "last Japanese solidier on the Pacific island in 1949" types like Jonah, and G. Will.

Actually, I disagree with #3, the article is worth reading.
I have been waiting for this kind of an article from Jonah and other deraged suffers of TDS, and this is the first I have seen where the author is clearly not a Trump fan, but IS SMART ENOUGH TO SEE THAT TRUMP HAS WON, and that it is Trump's party now.
This is an important point, and is ultimately, grudgingly, pro-Trump.

"if they went just a step further and became Democrats" "But then they would no longer be Republicans at all and would have to accept in an even more profound way that their influence on and within the party is finished."
They would also find they have no home in the hard Left dem party, i.e THE dem party, as well. Never Trumpers have already tried to give "advice" to the dems, to eschew the Left and find moderate ground. This is self serving since they are trying to carve out a home for themselves. It is, however, for naught since very few of the dems are listening. The Left would never truly accept a "former Republican". They would make use of them as useful idiots like they did McCain.
Beyond this, I question the value of people that are so FIXATED on hating Trump that they cannot see anything else. In many ways they are like BO who refused to make any changes in strategy or policy when drubbed in the 2010 and 2014 elections. For all BO's "smartness", he refused to learn anything. Never Trumpers have been dope slapped for 3+ years and they also REFUSE to learn anything. When you read their stuff you know what they are going to say and it is the same as in 2016. People that REFUSE to listen or learn are not all that intelligent or wise.

I hope during his second term President Trump purges DC of all the "career diplomats" and life-long "government employees" that try to sabotage not only his presidency, but our nation.

FTA: ~~"The result of all this? Trump currently enjoys 89 percent approval from Republicans. He is exceedingly unlikely to be removed from office at the conclusion of the impeachment process — because Republicans in the Senate almost certainly won't turn on him. Why? Because their constituents don't want them to."~~
As Sarah Palin would say...."You Betcha...!!"
