Democratic presidential hopeful Pete Buttigieg on Friday released a set of economic proposals that includes free public college for people living in households that make less than $100,000 per year. Under Mr. Buttigieg’s plan, families of college students that earn up to $100,000 wouldn’t pay any public college tuition. Those making between $100,000 and $150,000 would receive reduced tuition benefits. That’s a contrast to proposals from 2020 candidates such as Sens. Bernard Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who want to make public colleges and universities tuition-free for everyone. Mr. Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, also wants

Vote for me. If you have paid off your student loans, you can be taxed to pay for other people's student debt.

The more that's given away by the government that hasn't enough money, the more money the government will print to meet its needs. That's true inflation. Government mandated inflation will simply devalue the currency. Earned money usually represents effort, ingenuity, and hours in the life of the worker. Giving money away devalues all those... people get things for no effort, no reason. Those who work are simply stupid in that kind of scheme.
Democrats are courting economic disaster and promoting communism.... from each according to their ability (IF they choose to do anything) and to each according to their "need" (even if they don't want to do anything. I live in a small town in New England that is filled with younger people who don't want to do anything except make babies with other young women who don't want to do anything. These people lead, subsist, unexciting, unfulfilled lives.

So if I make $101,000 I have to pay but if I make $100,000 I don't? Does this sound like a boondoogle to anyone?

We have too many going to college. We need to encourage youth to go to technical and trade schools. How about tuition aid for that?

Consider, please, that the Cortez twit now sitting in Congress has a degree in economics from Boston University. That tells you the value of a college education in our society, and at the moment it is not "free."
Indeed, trade schools should be encouraged. College is not for everyone.

Well, if Pete or any of these socialists get elected, it won't be long until we're all making less than $100K

There is no age limit mentioned, nor prior level of completed education (I bet there will be, soon!) so, sign me up! According to Pete's proposition, the fact that I have a graduate degree already is not a factor. I'm a senior citizen, with an income of less than $100K, who wants to study nuclear engineering, with minors in electrical engineering and computer science. Oh, and I want to go to a party school that has a championship football team. Go Pete!

I'd offer that this is probably well-intended, if not for the mountain of empirical evidence showing that these programs always have one of two results: Either the free thing will be of such profoundly low quality that nobody will want it, or the cost to produce it will be prohibitive and no provider will have it.

Like health care, you deserve exactly as much education as you can afford to purchase.
Beyond 12th grade, education is largely either just frippery and foolishness, and often is propaganda more than actual education or it is job training, such as accounting, engineering, medical schools of various types. Any of those should be paid for by the 'recipient', who may or may not actually be a student.

Tell you what, Buttboi, just give me the money you'd spend on me. I always longed to finish my Masters, but the crapshow available at most state universities is more than I need at my advanced age. But I'll take YOUR money. I don't want any government cheese from your hoped-for government job (which you'll never get).

Any type of program that pays for college other than hard earned scholarships will result in a dumbing down of effort and results. Learning takes work, effort and more importantly MOTIVATION. For many college students (I had 3) when faced with a class they hate and sleeping in (or video games) they will often choose sleeping in, if not for the fact that they or their parents are paying for the class. Even then it can be dicey, but eventually there will be the discussion of accountability, if it is free who cares.

I actually need a plumber today. True. Kitchen sink is messed up. What I don't need and never will is some pussy-hatted twerpette with a degree in Wymyn's Studies.
Pete bootyjuice needs to quiet his silly sausage hole and apply those meager talents on that jacked-up city of his.

I can guarantee that households making somewhat over 100K would suddenly find themselves with reported income of 99K or less. Husband & wife filing separately for instance.
Democrats are such stupid ashes.

Human nature is we don't t value something as much (in general) if its given to us, vs. having to work for it. Attending college will turn into 4 years of partying for many students, with no intention to graduate.

When they say "for free", what they really mean is that the taxpayer has to fund it.

Remove all taxpayer money from pre-school, from K-12. and from colleges and universities.
The entire education system needs to be purged of government. Privatize.

Doom, is right, OP. Our recent mayor's election is a good example. City of 100k. 10k voted. The liberal female candidate lost (thank God) to the incumbent by a mere 200 votes. I'm surprised it didn't go into a recount battle...

The Dems have never been more transparent in their jockeying to give everything away for free, but the scary thing is that a large fraction of the populace supports this kind of thing. We're probably doomed as a nation.
