Two Texas high school football teams made sure the national anthem was sung at a game on Friday when none of the marching bands could be there to play it. The initial game was rained out on Thursday, so the Granbury Pirates and Crowley Eagles rescheduled to play the next night. However, when the announcer said there would be no national anthem because neither of the school’s bands could make it to the game, the Granbury Pirates decided to sing it themselves. Tracy Deason, who sent the video into NBC 5 DFW, said it did not take long before the other team and all of the fans joined them in singing.

The final score of the game was not given, but both teams won that evening.

I had the great good fortune to live in Texas for four short years and then we were transferred to Ohio. I am here to say, IT IS ALL TRUE! The hospitality, the enthusiasm, the patriotism and God and football. Our lives were changed forever.

The headline is misleading. It’s not that the Anthem “wouldn’t” be played. It’s actually “couldn’t” be played. No band from either school.

It is truly good and inspiring to see this still happening in this day and age. In the early eighties when my younger brother was in high school, his football team played another school in a driving downpour. The stands were sparsely populated with family members and diehards, but the majority of the fans either stayed home or watched through their car windshields. It was cold, wet and miserable, but if the players were out there representing their respective schools, we family members could do no less.
However, neither the cheerleaders nor the respective bands were on the field or at the game. It was raining too hard for the cheerleaders to safely perform and the band instruments and uniforms would have been destroyed by the driving rain.
When the announcement came over the P.A. that there would be no National anthem played by the band that night, the crowd in the stands started singing instead. We sang our National Anthem proudly, and the game was then played. I dont remember the final score, but I do know who won that soggy, miserable night!

One other point: this was in Illinois, of all places, not too far from Chicago, but it was a different time and place and it wasn't yet an anathema or an insult to stand and sing the National Anthem of this, our beloved country.

For those who are curious about the score:
"Crowley defensive back Xavier Goynes stopped a 2-point conversion try by Granbury with 54 seconds left in the game as the Eagles held off the Pirates 35-34 in a District 3-5A Division I football game on Friday afternoon at Eagle Stadium."

That is called a "righteous rebellion" against authority.
Thank you, my fellow Texans!

#5 is correct and #14 misses what happened. There was no rebellion. They didn't play the Anthem because they didn't have bands. The didn't forbid the playing of the Anthem, they never thought to sing it. The kids did though and showed the true love of country and good citizenship. They gave their parents and the school administration a lesson and moment of pride.

The original music instrument is the human voice. I ESPECIALLY applaud the very first young person who started the anthem. Things like this always start with one person being courageous.
