The September 26, 2019 edition of the Washington Times included an article, NYC bans calling someone an 'illegal alien' or threatening to contact ICE that began with the following excerpt: "New York City has made it against the law to call someone an “illegal alien” or threaten them by calling immigration officials on them. City Hall’s Commission on Human Rights released the new measures this week that could pose up to a $250,000 fine. The restrictions say the term “alien” — typically used to refer to a noncitizen — is a loaded phrase meant to categorize migrants as 'other' and dehumanize them." Before we consider the attack

Comments:

First Amendment absolutist, Justice Hugo Black, would know what to tell them. The entire Bill of Rights is in danger, especially the first two Amendments.

This couldn't possibly be constitutional. We are supposed to have free speech. This is a slipper slope and very dangerous, with the left pushing for an Orwellian society.

Not even close to yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater. That totally sounds like a First Amendment violation. I don't think the framers meant for the First Amendment to protect anyone, citizen or non-citizen, from having their feelings hurt.

How would this even be enforced? Would heresay be allowed (seems to be the go to method to introduce testimony by the left)? Would the illegal alien's statement against the perp be accepted as unimpeachable (they must all be believed - after all they are virtuous and noble, even the rapists). This NYC law will be around about as long as flatulence in a dust storm.

Banning words and phrases gets people killed. A white guy got sucker punched and killed by a black kid a few weeks back at a fair for supposedly saying the "n" word - doubtful, but that was what was initially reported as the excuse for the attack. Will illegal aliens get to weaponize the phrase and go on uncontrollable rampages - justified, no less - if some mean old white guy conservative, e.g. Rush Limbaugh, mentions "illegal aliens" and how they're taking over the country?

The real issue here is media like bloggers and cable and TV networks that originate from New York City. Anyone in any media that uses "illegal alien" will be subject to the fine. To avoid a run in with authorities networks for example will force their employees not to use the term on the air. This won't stand up in court but that is not the point. New York believes it is above the law and will do whatever it can get away with for as long as it can till their hands are slapped. Then they will turn around and do something similar forcing the process all over again. Personally I prefer the term illegal foreign national.

A new report by the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee reaffirms what the White House refuses to accept: Russia intervened in the 2016 election to help then-candidate Donald Trump and to hurt his presidential rivals. The findings are alarming for the breadth of Russia’s operation, the Kremlin’s direct involvement and the ongoing threat posed by foreign meddling to American democracy. But perhaps more than anything, the report amounts to a bipartisan rebuke of the White House’s own disinformation campaign to shift the blame away from Russia. The committee, chaired by Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., released a second report this week that furthered the findings of America’s intelligence community

Going solar isn’t necessarily any protection from California’s new “planned” power outages, and local residents and business are enduring a lot more than just a few inconveniences. Bloomberg’s Chris Martin has a story on California’s troubles with one of my favorite headlines ever: “Californians Learning That Solar Panels Don't Work in Blackouts.” Apparently, many of California’s would-be Earth-savers had no idea that just putting solar panels on their roofs doesn’t mean they’ll have power when PG&E switches it off. As Martin explains: "Most panels are designed to supply power to the grid -- not directly to houses. During the heat of the day, solar systems can crank out

The men and women of science are supposed to be rational, sober professionals. Yet a few hundred have decided to behave as rabble, having been overtaken by global warming hysteria. Reuters reported Saturday that “almost 400 scientists have endorsed a civil disobedience campaign aimed at forcing governments to take rapid action to tackle climate change.” The objective is to warn the rest of us “that failure could inflict ‘incalculable human suffering.’” To say these activist-researchers have broken “with the caution traditionally associated with academia to side with peaceful protesters courting arrest” is almost an understatement. They have chosen to align themselves with the Extinction Rebellion,

The time for President Trump to take action on ANTIFA in labeling the organization an international terrorist organization is long overdue. It is an international terrorist group, since it also operates in many European countries as well as the United Kingdom aside from the US. ANTIFA is only part of a much larger spiderweb of anti-American terrorist groups, all founded and organized by Barack H. Obama and run via the central organization known as Organizing For Action. ANTIFA along with Black Lives Matter, MoveOn.org, the ACLU, and Planned Parenthood, just to name a few are all part of the massive Obama organized and managed sphere of influence,

There are a number of things that climate activists don’t want the rest of us to do, like eating meat and flying on airplanes. They seem to have decided that discouraging flying is a better bet than compulsory vegetarianism, so several European countries are moving in that direction. In Sweden, the government “is considering making it mandatory for travel companies to declare the climate impact of their long-haul trips.” "The companies should inform customers of the climate impact of long-haul trips when advertising or selling tickets, the government said on Friday." The bar just got higher for deputies to make marijuana arrests in Pinellas County. Pinellas Sheriff Bob Gualtieri and Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney Bernie McCabe on Wednesday issued a memo cautioning deputies about making pot arrests in light of a new law legalizing a type of cannabis called hemp. While the memo only applies to the county’s 820 or so deputies, some Pinellas County police departments have also raised the standards for their officers to make marijuana arrests since the state law went into effect July 1. Wednesday’s memo marks the first time the county’s top prosecutor has issued an official stance on which marijuana cases his office is willing to pursue.

All of Washington has been atwitter with the president’s recent decision to draw down American forces from their ongoing mission in Syria. The reason is the purported American abandonment — betrayal, in the eyes of many — of the Syrian Kurds. But the situation is more complicated than that. There has been much conflation of both the American mission in Syria and the disposition of America’s erstwhile Kurdish friends. The fact is, despite being the world’s largest stateless ethnic population, sharing a contiguous landmass that cuts across Turkey, Syria, Iraq, and Iran — roughly a 500,000-square-kilometer area — the Kurds are by no means a monolithic entity.
