NASCAR has an all-new car coming in 2021, but a bigger change may happen the following year. “Nothing is fully confirmed until it hits the race track. That said, hybrid tech could certainly be in our cars by 2022, if all plans stay on track,” NASCAR’s senior vice president for racing development, John Probst, told Tech Crunch this week. Probst said the plan is still very much in development, and that the powertrains would be focused more on improving performance than fuel efficiency. Even if they debut in 2022, hybrid powertrains may be used initially just on road courses and short

Maybe electric go karts would leave a smaller carbon footprint?

Might just as well equip the tracks with electric slots so they can run full size slot cars on 100% solar electric. That'll bring in the crowds.

Heck, that will make it possible to put the CROWDS in the driver's seat! As long as they don't fight over the wheel...

I can see it now. Zero to 60 in 5 minutes on the drag racing track.

"It started with Woke Dale Junior."
I remember several years back Jr. proudly stating he'd taken his crew to a Michael Moore movie.
Which movie? Doesn't matter.

They'll soon be racing electric mopeds, with rainbow-colored streamers on the handle bars.

Key word in headline is may. They may not too. Imagine NASCAR races with electric vehicles. The sound of silence would be deafening. Fans wouldn’t go. It would be a total embarrassment for teams and drivers. Ain’t going to happen.

Not racing any more. Toyota putting so much more into engine research than the others.

Actually, #7 & 8, with enough money, hybrids can be quite powerful. But they are complex, very expensive and not something that most people want, and make no sense for most NASCAR tracks.
The ONLY technical advantage that a hybrid brigs to the table is the ability to do regenerative braking, which is providing the majority of the stopping force on the vehicle with a generator, putting that energy back into the batteries, instead of taking the energy of the motion of the car and converting it to heat in the brakes. So, in a stop and go traffic situation, with lots of braking going on, a hybrid can be more efficient, get higher gas mileage. In all other driving condiions, hybrids are a liability.
For example, if you drive a hybrid across the country at cruising speed for long periods, the batteries and the motor-generator unit do NOTHING AT ALL during cruising, and are, in fact, just dead weight, reducing range and reducing fuel economy, while greatly increasing the cost of the vehicle, and taking up space.
In the great majority of NASCAR races, on high speed ovals, there is little or no braking, no chance for the hybrid system to do anything, other than provide a bit of extra power until the batteries were exhausted from their initial starting charge. There would be no recharging with braking, so no benefit most of the race, and just dead weight of dead batteries and a motor-generator would be just reducing performance.
A few NASCAR races are on road courses, with braking and left and right corners. These might have more performance with hybrids, but primarily it would be better fuel economy. Who in hell cares about fuel economy in racing? Just dumb. And since the road course racing is maybe 3 or 5 races per year (I really don't know, but very few) they will need entirely different cars from their super speedway cars, and they will be very expensive, and have limited time and money for development, so likely be unreliable, too.
VERY bad idea. Just pure stupid.

To better conform to its new target market, NASCAR should henceforth field only Mazda Miatas, Jeep CJ's, and Subarus, with the occasional Smart Car thrown in for good measure and with all festooned with COEXIST and BERNIE 2020 decals.
