During my student days at a UCLA economics department faculty/graduate student coffee hour in the 1960s, I was chatting with Professor Armen Alchian, probably the greatest microeconomic theory economist of the 20th century. I was trying to impress Alchian with my knowledge of statistical type I and type II errors. I explained that unlike my wife, who assumed that everyone was her friend until they prove differently, my assumption was everyone was an enemy until they proved otherwise. The result: My wife's vision maximized the number of her friends but maximized her chances of betrayal. My vision minimized my chances of betrayal at a cost of

Once again, the brilliant Walter Williams nails it perfectly.
I had a very similar situation when visiting Armenia. An American friend was with me on a business trip, raised in Armenia, he had been an American for over 20 years. We visited some of his family and childhood friends. During a discussion, one of his old friends said something which clearly caused the whole group to stop and stare. My Armenian-American friend, stopped, and replied calmly and clearly, and after a bit, the joviality slowly resumed. Later I found that the Armenian had said "Armenia would be so much better off if the Americans weren't holding us back." My friend told him that he shouldn't talk about thing which he didn't know anything about. In fact, the reason we were there was to provide funding for an Armenian research project which would employ a number of their scientists.
Later, when he explained the situation and what was said, I laughed out loud, and commented, "Does he realize that 999 out of a thousand Americans, if offered $100 to locate Armenia on a map couldn't get it within 500 miles, and many couldn't place it on the right continent? Holding them back? Hell, Americans don't give a damn about them, generally."
Yeah, just about all people just don't give a damn, one way or the other about someone else that they don't know. WAY too much trouble to "hold someone down", we are all busy with our own lives.

In theory this is the way it should be. Unfortunately there's too much hay to be made by shoving race in everyone's face and thinking about it for more than one nanosecond/day is impossible to avoid. Of course gender, religion, political ideology, income, etc. also are exploited by the stuff disturbers, drawing lines sells on many levels.

As for you personally, Dr. Williams, I care a lot. And I think I would even if you were white.

If only blacks and other minorities can see what we whites are really thinking; racial grievances can disappear overnight. I don't give a damn about race relations and I'm not wasting my energy on monitoring blacks to make sure they stay down.

Walter Williams is a national
treasure. I told my wife as soon as this NYT 1619 bs came out, I don’t begin the day wondering how I’m going to put my foot on the throat of black people.

Jesus. Jesus cares.
I mean, it's not as if someone else doesn't like me, really, but the REAL care?

It just goes to show you that even Walter Williams can be very very wrong at times because all of us out here do care very much--about you, Walter Williams.
