It follows concern in several countries over the presence of impurities in Zantac and other ranitidine products.
Canada and France have already announced Zantac recalls. The US and the European Union are investigating.
Health authorities say there is no immediate risk, but patients have been advised to consult a doctor who can prescribe alternatives to ranitidine.
What is the fear about? On 13 September, both the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) published their decisions to review the presence of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in medicines containing the drug ranitidine.
NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen (a substance that could cause cancer

I've lived with heartburn for most of my adult life. There is a television ad showing a guy with a bottle of Tums in the night stand, the medicine cabinet and the car console. That is me, but I'm a big fan of Prilosec and Nexium. However my doctor, an internist, discourages my use of those products on a regular basis because either of them can cause liver problems. Instead, she encourages Zantac, which I don't find to work nearly as well. I think I'm going back to Prilosec and Nexium. I'm plenty old enough to outrun any liver kickbacks.

I’m dealing with rampant acid reflux and take 2 prescription strength Nexium each day - that’s 4 times the over the counter dosage. I also take 4 sucralfate tablets each day. They are making a HUGE difference for me but my GI also told me that I could take Zantac as well if needed. So far I haven’t needed it.
I asked about side effects of all of these meds and he said that most of them have been disproved in recent years. The only one that they say is actually a problem is bone loss. But I take 1200 mgs of calcium and vitamin D each day plus Fosamax once a week for bone density.
So, I’m sticking with my meds - it’s that or suffer all day every day.

Wanna cure heartburn... Apple Cider Vinegar, a teaspoon of baking soda mix with a 4 oz glass of water. Drink in AM. Again at night. After one week or so, heartburn is in clear remission. After a month it is gone and has stayed gone for 5 years. I take another dose once in a while after Pizza or any spicy or acidic food. Guaranteed!

I like simple. For very occasional indigestion, I have found an unusual remedy. Altoids mints. Not really so unusual as it contains oil of peppermint, which my late Mother swore was great for digestive upset.

Re #6, my naturopath swears by apple cider vinegar. Likes the raw kind (the kind that accumulates mother in the bottom of the bottle) - some vinegar in a small glass of water with 1 tsp raw honey. Morning and night. Sip.
I have not needed for a while. She believes it should be part of our regular daily regimen.

Naturopaths have been saying for many years that the cause is not enough stomach acid not too much. I don’t like the taste of vinegar so I take enzymedica acv capsules with the mother. Works like a charm.

Just fyi, Prilosec is not for long term use because it contributes to magnesium deficiency which among other thing.
All these drugs seem to rob Peter to pay Paul, changing how your body functions and thus causing complications down the road.

Not taking Zantac but wanted to comment on something. In 2012 I was getting generic guiafenesin from my insurer's mail order OTC. Opened a new bottle and the burning in my esophagus was crippling. Had 3 endoscopy's in a year. It had burned a hole in my lower esophagus. It did not have the proper coatings. Nobody would take the blame. They wanted me to send them the bottle and remaining pills.(don't think so) Recently, the same thing happened with generic acetaminophen from them.
Is it heartburn or is it from cheap OTC drugs they give seniors?

A physician 20 years back prescribed Prilosec or Prevacid for my acid indigestion. Six years later, I was diagnosed by a smarter physician with osteoporosis. I switched to Zantac at his suggestion and eventually returned to normal bone density levels.
The same original internist over-prescribed Advair for my asthma. It contains a steroid. Using it too long gave me early-onset eye cataracts.
Thanks, Doc.

My little pharmacy in the grocery store where we shopped closed. Found another small family run one in my home town. Transferred all my info to them, even though they tried to send it to Walgreens. I don't trust these big guys and it isn't their job to give medical advise! Just fill prescriptions and do it on-time and work with my insurance company and I will be happy happy!
