NEW YORK—The master of the love letter to New York, E.B. White, eloquently described the city as a place that “can offer the gift of loneliness and the gift of privacy.” Like many of us he believed the place would last and would always matter. White was an optimist, sophisticated and thoroughly American. He was lucky to die in 1985. I say lucky because fate spared him from seeing the wreckage of what was once his dream city. It was also my dream place, an indelible part of my youth, a poem of steel and limestone majesty, of high-end shops, hotels, theaters, and nightclubs, of dandies and high-class women,

I have been to NYC once with no plans to ever return. While I enjoyed the Statue of Liberty, Lion King on Broadway and other historical sights as a whole I hated it. To each his own but I simply don't get it. But then again I am a deplorable and simply cannot appreciate all the chaos NYC has to offer. Thanks, I'll stay where I am.

About far more than NYC, self-destructive Western/intellectual culture today. If you know nothing else, know this -- ".. the constant search for the lowest common denominator..." I'm reminded of the shunned and reviled Owen Benjamin who says he's not a white supremacist but rather a white enthusiast.

Funny you should mention 60s movies, #2. Today I watched a couple of episodes of Kojak, from 1975-76 or so, when NYC was dirty, crime-ridden, gaudy prostitutes hanging out on street corners. Giuliani wouldn't be elected Mayor until 1990s. A city, like a nation, can deteriorate and collapse more quickly than one likes to think. That's because we are on the downward trajectory as a nation. The decline begins and accelerates once the Law is not applied equally, when people detect the whiff of corruption. This is true everywhere: every kind of nastiness, criminality, perversion, poverty, ignorance is spawned and nourished in environments of lawlessness. You know, the Hobbesian life that is "nasty, brutish and short." This decadent social/legal environment and economic dislocation can pave the way to the arrival of a dictator who promises to restore order and safety.

The New York City that everyone fondly remembers is the NYC of over 40 years ago. After decades of Democrat rule.....including Blumberg, who only became a Republican because the Dem ticket was too full.....and being shaken down by Amish boys like Sharpton, and now the rule of Commissar DeBlasio. the NYC you have now is Moscow with glitter. White people aren't the cancer; Dems/Libs/Progressives or whatever name they hide behind are the cancer. They destroy everything they touch.

I use to hate the East Coast forced to travel to NY and Princeton every month! I still do! From a Midwesterner perspective, Minneapolis we found your cities to be loud, obnoxious and full of terrible rude people who all think we are still fighting the injuns here in flyover country! Unfortunately, our town is now going the way of yours! We NEVER leave the burbs to travel downtown to be shot or knifed by a Somali refugee just looking for a better life!

What a stupid piece. I’m a staunch Trump supporter and a proud irredeemable, but New York is more beautiful, cleaner and safer than ever, in spite of its buffoon mayor. I suspect the author is a professional curmudgeon.

The country of Haiti is convulsed by growing unrest, with thousands taking to the streets to demand the ouster of U.S. backed President Jovenel Moise. The issues are familiar to the impoverished nation: food and fuel shortages, a mismanaged economy, and rampant corruption. But also driving the protests has been the government's response to several severe storms and hurricanes that have ravaged the island nation. Destroyed housing and businesses have not been rebuilt and the frustration of the people in their government's malfeasance and incompetence has boiled over. As usual, class envy has played a role in the violence. Al Jazaeera: "In the wealthier

In late June of 1941, my father's first cousins Moshe and Dvora fled their house in the tiny town of Kameny Most, about halfway between Slonim and Baranavichy in what is now Belarus. Hitler had launched Operation Barbarossa days before, and their home stood almost on the German-Soviet line that had divided Poland in 1939. Now the Germans had marched into town. The boy and girl, then 15 and 16, reached the woods behind their house before the Germans arrived. Their parents and baby brother fled a minute later, but the Germans

Depravity: the state of being morally bad, or an action that is morally bad. Impeachment depravity: a campaign by Democrat politicos intended to excite the extremist Democrat base and simulate impeachment without the requirement of any grounds for impeachment nor any substantive steps that might trigger real impeachment proceedings. That’s where we stand in the wake of the fake whistleblower scandal and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s empty impeachment inquiry threat, although new developments break minute by minute. The day Pelosi leveled her toothless threat, Mike Huckabee, guesting on The Story with Martha MacCallum, spoke for millions

Stop me if this sounds familiar. An intelligence operative backed by a Clinton lawyer accuses Trump of an inappropriate relationship with a former Soviet bloc country leading to an investigation and calls for everything from imprisonment to impeachment. The political half of Washington D.C. is muttering quietly, “Didn’t we do this already?” After spending years accusing Trump of working with the Russians to undermine Hillary, they’re accusing him of working with the Ukrainians to undermine Biden. If Warren pulls far enough ahead, the Democrats will accuse Trump of working with the Poles or the Latvians to undermine her campaign.

Former Ambassador Joe Wilson — who found himself and his then-wife Valerie Plame in the middle of a political firestorm when he contradicted President George W. Bush’s rationale for the 2003 invasion of Iraq — has died at the age of 69. Plame, a former CIA operative who was outed in apparent revenge after Wilson blew the whistle on Bush, said the cause was organ failure. Wilson and Plame ended their marriage in 2017. A veteran, 23-year diplomat, Wilson had been assigned by the CIA as a private citizen to go to Niger in 2003 and investigate reports that Iraq had been sold uranium yellowcake by the African country

I was alerted to a substantial error in my text thanks to the kind offices of Eugene Volokh. In that column, I excoriated Peggy Noonan for misreading the Trump-Zelensky transcript. I was wrong. I had misread it. I had written that Zelensky first brought up Biden in the phone call when it was the reverse. Zelensky brought up Giuliani, which then led Trump to bring up Biden. How many times do Democrats get to cry wolf before a rational body politic tells them to go fly a kite? Instead of retreating with tails between their legs over their failed Russia hoax, they're already at it again. Did any Democrats leading the false charge that President Trump colluded with Russia to steal the 2016 election ever apologize for putting the country through this nightmare? Did any of their media water carriers ever backpedal from their anti-Trump sensationalism? Of course not, because in their minds Trump is so evil and his presidency so bad for the country that even ignoble efforts to remove him

What a crushing feeling it must be to be a Democrat, an infotainment industry newsreader, or a NeverTrumper today. The week started off so full of hope, with impeachment in the air as the autumn colors turned. That was Monday. By Thursday morning it was all over but the shouting. Oh, and the lies. Lots and lots of lies. Over the weekend, news broke that a whistleblower had the goods on Trump, who had supposedly twisted the arm of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky into a quid-pro-quo deal to investigate Joe Biden, Trump's potential president rival. The swamp-fever pitch reached such heights over the next two days, that on Tuesday

When Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "When you strike at a king, you must kill him," he probably wasn't thinking of impeachment. But politically speaking, the stakes are pretty much the same whether you try to murder a monarch or remove a president from office. Just ask Newt Gingrich, who found himself the victim of a putsch within his own party after his impeachment of Bill Clinton died in the Senate. Had Gingrich claimed Clinton's scalp, do you doubt he'd have likely remained Speaker for as long as he might have wanted? Suppose however the target of Congress's impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump isn't actually

During an appearance Thursday on CNN, the famed Watergate sleuth reacted to controversy about an intelligence community whistleblower who filed a complaint alleging Trump improperly leveraged military aid to encourage Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Trump attacking the whistleblower's sources as being "close to a spy" and alluding to capital punishment, Bernstein said, provided "real time" evidence of the president's corruption.
