Google Claims ‘Quantum Supremacy’

In what may be a huge milestone in computing, Google says it has achieved "quantum supremacy," .(snip).. The claim, made in a new scientific paper, is the most serious indication yet that the promise of quantum computers—an emerging but unproven type of machine—is becoming reality, including their potential to solve formerly ungraspable mathematical problems.

Comments:

Great. Big Tech, which already tries to spy on everything you do, will soon have the ability to hack all your accounts and passwords (quantum computers make conventional security obsolete).

They are wrong of course. As a lifelong computer programmer I can tell you that a computer can do absolutely nothing on it's own. Every step, every communications connection, every logic or mathmatical computer instruction must be worked out by a human mind and after much software manipulation and testing, the computer will repeat those instructions for you. Google is blowing smoke. Most unauthorized access is done by carelessness or the deliberate action of someone who already has the passwords or the admin authority to access the information. The success of Brute Force hacking is rare unless you use simple passwords found in the dictionary and the resource you are attempting to access does not limit the number of attempts at getting the correct password before it shuts you down. On the physical security side, a walk through any user department will find a number of passwords taped to the bottom of a keyboard or in a desk drawer. It's not magic.

Google is evil. And I don't trust anything they say.

This is wishful thinking by Google. Quantum Computing does have theoretically huge payoffs, but there's a problem. These "qbits" they speak of are actually single atoms, or even single atomic particles, placed into one of two states and linked somehow so that their states control each other as in a standard computer. Unfortunately the very quantum nature of the linked particles that gives them their theoretical power also causes them to "collapse" and become unusable very quickly. And the greater their number the faster they collapse into uselessness. We're talking milliseconds here, or less. The instability increases much faster that the number of qbits too. It's almost like the universe's quantum structure was designed to prevent quantum computing! The first working Q.C. had 15 qbits, and this one has a few dozen. It took the most extreme bleeding edge technology to make even that happen. But, to do useful QC operations will take something like 1000 qubits working in concert. Ain't gonna happen, ever. Personally I like this state of affairs. Our entire banking system and all our secure online activities depend on public key encryption, which would be broken by a working QC. Down with QC!

A 59-year-old man has died from injuries suffered during an attack by two teenage brothers prompted by the man's refusal to give them a dollar. John Weed was attending the Great Frederick Fair in Maryland on Friday with his family when he was approached by the teens, ages 15 and 16. According to the prosecution, the 15-year-old sucker-punched Weed after he refused to give them a dollar, knocking him unconscious. Video evidence of the attack shows chaos and laughter in moments after Weed hits the pavement; one of the boys even spits on his lifeless body.

In an angry and emotional speech at the United Nations climate summit on Monday, Swedish teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg tore into world leaders for failing to act. "This is all wrong," Thunberg said, reading from a piece of paper. "I shouldn't be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean, yet you come to us young people for hope. How dare you." "People are suffering," the 16-year-old continued through tears. "People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are at the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about

Sunday, MSNBC “PoliticsNation” host Reverend Al Sharpton delivered a memo to President Donald Trump addressing his solution to solve homelessness in California. Sharpton questioned Trump’s Christianity for saying homelessness was bad for business, saying he “subverted the humanitarian called Jesus’ message to nurse a political grudge against California.” He then said he does not “understand” how “avowed Christians” and “evangelicals” support the president. “Absent a certain baseline racism, I still can’t understand why avowed Christians, let alone evangelicals, are still enthralled to you, Mr. President

"Democrats say we have guns in America because of 'corruption,'" former White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders declared on Twitter on Sept. 12. "No, we have guns because it's our God-given right enshrined in the Constitution." (Snip) The second part of that tweet is silly; God didn't give people the right to own AR-15s any more than a divine entity gave Americans the right to own automobiles without seat belts. The first part of Sanders’ tweet, though, is mostly accurate. The National Rifle Association's money doesn't corrupt Republican legislators. Instead, Republicans oppose gun control because conservative political identity is today inseparable from guns. Identity is a deeper motivator

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D., Texas) claimed to have held an AR-15 and immediately regretted it, saying it weighed as much as "10 boxes that you might be moving." Speaking to reporters last week, she added that AR-15s use a ".50 caliber" bullet that ought to be licensed. "I've held an AR-15 in my hand," she said. "I wish I hadn’t. It is as heavy as 10 boxes that you might be moving. And the bullet that is utilized, a .50 caliber, these kinds of bullets need to be licensed and do not need to be on the streets."

The Maryknoll missionaries have thrown their support behind 16-year-old climate activist Greta Thunberg, comparing her to the Virgin Mary. “Christians getting their knickers all in a twist over the passionate, articulate & knowledgeable witness of Greta Thunberg because of her age seem to overlook the age of the Virgin Mary at the time of the Annunciation,” the group wrote on Twitter. “Young women can & have changed the world,” they concluded. The TV people put on a TV show to praise TV, but TV viewers tuned out in droves. The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards on the Fox network hit a record low with a dismal 5.8 household Nielsen rating — a 22% drop from last year, Deadline reported. Last year, the show pulled a 7.4 rating (10.2 million viewers). The latest show got crushed by NBC’s "Sunday Night Football," even though it featured the undefeated Los Angeles Rams versus the lowly Cleveland Browns. TV's biggest night included all the virtue-signaling viewers have come to expect from awards shows like the Oscars and Grammys.

Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper told CNN Monday night that getting a transcript of President Trump's July phone call with the new Ukraine president "may not be such a great thing.""You know, I hate to suggest this, but it's crossed my mind that even if we got a transcript, well, can we be assured that's actually what was said? So getting a transcript may not be such a great thing, either." (Video) President Trump has said he may consider releasing a transcript, although he and others say it might have a chilling effect on future conversations between a president and foreign leaders, if they're afraid to speak candidly.
Venus was once like Earth until climate

Venus was once a habitable planet with liquid water on our surface, much like our own, until runaway climate change turned it into a hell world. New NASA computer models suggest that until 700 million years ago, temperatures ranged from 20C to 50C on the surface. NASA’s Pioneer Venus mission spotted hints that the planet had once had oceans in the 1980s - but at the time, scientists believe that it had evaporated quickly. But new research by the Nasa Goddard Institute for Space Science suggests that the ocean may have lasted for billions of years. The researchers believe that

Sen. Bernie Sanders on Tuesday proposed an “extreme wealth tax” on the highest-income Americans, along with a “national wealth registry” that he said would help prevent them from avoiding the tax. The tax rate would start at 1 percent on net worth of more than $32 million and rise with income above that, topping out at 8 percent on wealth over $10 billion. Sanders’ Democratic presidential campaign said the tax would raise $4.35 trillion over a decade and would be used to fund "Medicare for All", along with his plans for affordable housing and universal childcare.
