President Donald Trump says his administration is revoking California’s authority to set auto mileage standards stricter than those issued by federal regulators. In a tweet, Trump said his move would result in less expensive and safer cars. He insisted that new cars would be cleaner, even as they burn more gasoline than they would have under Obama-era fuel efficiency standards he wants to replace. California’s authority to set its own, tougher emissions standards goes back to a waiver issued by Congress during passage of the Clean Air Act in 1970.

Op, agree it's great news. I remember the days of making sure I bought the "49 state" model rather than the under powered CA model.

The watermelon progs in California will scream about the environment, climate change, etc. But they ignore the costs. There are real hard-dollar costs that go into developing the technology to achieve the California standard (assuming it's even attainable), and these costs will increase the price of every new car. Higher new car prices = fewer car sales and more older (and dirtier) cars on the road. There will also be higher costs to owners to maintain/repair cars with higher and higher tech. To achieve the California standard cars will have to be smaller and lighter than they would otherwise be. This has a cost in lives and injuries. TANSTAAFL, despite what Gruesome Newsom and his cohorts say.

Its always been said that CA leads the way. Leading lemmings over a cliff maybe isn’t good? So glad Trump is putting the kibash on their regressive regulations.

Actually, #6, the air in LA is a hell of a lot cleaner than it used to be. Huge improvement. But the 49 state regs will be good enough, and we need NO Federal fuel mileage standards at all.

The funny little part of this is the CA gov't has been receiving less $$$ from the gas tax due to the higher efficiency mileage, which prompted them to install a new increase, and discussing how to charge every driver on each mile they drive.
#5, when they had a large fire at the Richmond refinery, they applied to expand the operation which would add capacity to the state, but the environmentalist demanded an entire new EIR would need to be done, which would have shut down the plant for years, so they simply built what they had previously.
Again, it's all how they can punish drivers, by not building the necessary infrastructure YEARS ago, and watched the population nearly double in the last 35 years. But, now it's how can they find even more money to pay for the government they've created in Sacramento. All with 1/3 of the population living in poverty, which is roughly 13,000,000 people - or more than many states combined.

# 4 makes a very good point. California types are YUGE on federal government dictates when it suits them. Not so much this time - but they never counted on Donald Trump.

Car manufacturers have been producing very clean burning engines.. They've also been using cheaper metal --and less of it--to reduce weight and increase mileage, which means less safe vehicles. The question arises how manufacturers can / will adapt....I doubt they'll revert / retool immediately. Consumer demand dictates as much or more than federal regs. Obama was such a fool...not to be outdone by recent California governors.

California leftiy hucksters are trying to dictate & broadcast their wacky policies on this and many other issues not only in California but throughout the rest of the States as well. The votes of the American citizens across the country are being obscured on matters we the people should be having a voice. Do Californiz lefties ever read the U.S. Constitution?! Good for this President for ending this disturbing political trend which could eliminate the will of the people!. California lefty pols and its radical tech moguls do not rule this country, although they sure seem to be trying to marginalize and obscure the will of the American people.

This is GREAT news! The darned ridiculous fuel mileage standards, and tighter auto emissions standards of California, compared to the 49 other states has always been a cost factor that the rest of us had to support the California nutballs with their special rules. Making two kinds of cars is costly, and guess who pays for Californai's special stuff - disproportionally? The rest of us, of course.
