Why Do We Still Celebrate
Constitution Day?

Original Article

We live in seemingly divisive times. Politicians are at each other’s throats. Talking heads on the network news explain to us all the reasons we should hate and mistrust each other. Confidence in public institutions is at an all-time low. There seems to be nothing but bad news. Then we notice an oft-neglected holiday on our calendars: Constitution Day. This federal holiday commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. And as we all learned in high school civics class, the Constitution defines the structure of our federal government. It is the most remarkable political charters in history. This may not mean much

Ummm.... I'm 62 years old. I pay attention. I did not know until today that there WAS a Constitution Day, let alone that anyone celebrated it.

Our Constitution is a marvel of goverment stability, responsiveness, evolution, equity, and simplicity. As Benjamin Franklin was leaving the Constituional Convention in 1787, a woman asked him what sort of government they had crafted. "A republic, madam, if you can keep it." To a man, the delegates knew that a well-educated citizenry was a necessary ingredient for such a goverment. Unfortunately, our statist schools of today are churning out students who couldn't even tell you what a democratic republic is, much less how to keep it.

Every country has some form of Constitution, even the Soviet Union and North Korea, to "protect people". The document is only as strong as its judiciary is honest, its government supportive of the people, and the people vigilant. These days, more and more, the Constitution is being used to usurp freedom and liberty as politicians assert social "rights" that are not, and deny individual rights that are plainly guaranteed, from freedoms of speech and religion to bearing arms. And what do Americans do about it? That's the question at hand...

Ronald Reagan certainly nailed it. From his 1989 farewell address but even more important in today's political climate: "Ours was the first revolution in the history of mankind that truly reversed the course of government, and with three little words: ‘We the people.’ ‘We the people’ tell the government what to do, it doesn’t tell us. ‘We the people’ are the driver, the government is the car. And we decide where it should go, and by what route, and how fast. Almost all the world’s constitutions are documents in which governments tell the people what their privileges are. Our Constitution is a document in which ‘We the people’ tell the government what it is allowed to do. ‘We the people’ are free. This belief has been the underlying basis for everything I’ve tried to do these past eight years. But back in the 1960s, when I began, it seemed to me that we’d begun reversing the order of things—that through more and more rules and regulations and confiscatory taxes, the government was taking more of our money, more of our options, and more of our freedom. I went into politics in part to put up my hand and say, ‘Stop.’ I was a citizen politician, and it seemed the right thing for a citizen to do. I think we have stopped a lot of what needed stopping. And I hope we have once again reminded people that man is not free unless government is limited. There’s a clear cause and effect here that is as neat and predictable as a law of physics: As government expands, liberty contracts."

When the Tea Party was in full swing, local members decided to offer a constitution knowledge bowl competition for middle schoolers. It flourished for five years. The young people that took part were almost all either home schooled or from private schools. The public school teachers wanted nothing to do with us. There was not one response from them to our offer of a presentation about the Constitution on this day set aside for it. Just a few generations ago, this would not have been so, Civics classes routinely taught the Constitution and its effect on modern politics and philosophy. Cleon Skousen's great book The 5,000 Year Leap is one of the best tools for introductory studies of this amazing document.

Remember when intelligence leaker Ed Snowden's gentlest critics said that he should have taken his complaints of intelligence abuses through established internal channels instead of steal thousands of documents of top secret intelligence files and then leak them to the press? That 'mistake' - and I don't think it was one -- is what drove him to seek refuge in the old Soviet Union just a few years ago? Remember when the same was said of then-Private Bradley Manning, who leaked troves of military secrets to Wikileaks before being packed off to Leavenworth? He should have gone through channels... Within hours of suffering chest pains Tuesday night, Bernie Sanders had stents inserted to relieve the blockage in an artery. He’s lucky. Because if Sanders lived under “Medicare for All,” things likely would not have gone as well. Sanders, along with every other Democrat pushing “Medicare for All” and its variants, constantly bleat about how the U.S. spends far more on health care but gets worse results than countries such as Canada or the U.K. But the quality measures – infant mortality and longevity – are notoriously unreliable for international comparisons. Infant mortality rates depend on how countries measure them, and longevity has more to do with things like

TALLAHASSEE — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and South Florida Democrats plan to meet with Venezuelan exiles this week amid an ongoing stalemate in Congress over whether or not to offer protections to those who fled the South American country. Democrats have scheduled a forum on Thursday in Weston, a town that has seen an influx of Venezuelans fleeing their country during an economic collapse that began under former President Hugo Chávez and has continued under President Nicolás Maduro.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A group of San Francisco neighbors said they had to do something to make their street safe. Their answer? Some giant rocks. Fed up with what they see as the city’s failure to combat homelessness and rampant drug use, the neighbors had boulders delivered to their sidewalk to block people from pitching tents on their street. That started a fight that shows the frustration with an unprecedented homelessness crisis in California. Cities are struggling to address the lack of affordable housing and a growing number of homeless encampments that are popping up on city streets, sometimes in neighborhoods.

The content of the Ukraine phone call, as unseemly as it may be for President Donald Trump, will not be the basis of impeachment, the way Bill Clinton’s “perjurious, false and misleading testimony to the grand jury” was. Which is why House Democrats are utilizing it as pretext to fish the whole expanse of the vast waters of presidential diplomatic communications with foreign leaders. A few breaths after grousing that Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani “seems to think I’m judge and jury here,” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, the California Democrat, almost comically delivered the verdict, telling ABC News on Sunday that “what we have seen already is damning” and falsely

How did this get to be standard practice? The whistle-blower scandal that has prompted the fourth presidential impeachment process in American history has put a spectacle from earlier this decade back on display: the jaw-smacking feast of scavengers who circled around Ukraine as Viktor Yanukovych, a Moscow-linked kleptocrat, was driven from power. Ukraine’s crisis was the latest to energize a club whose culture has come to be treated as normal—a culture in which top-tier lawyers, former U.S. public officials, and policy experts (and their progeny) cash in by trading on their connections and their access to insider policy information—usually by providing services to kleptocrats like Yanukovych.

California, whose new leftist governor, Gavin Newsom, has big ambitions to be the counter-president for now, and eventually replace President Trump, has this one little problem that always comes of socialist rule: The locals are fleeing. And now it turns out half the ones who haven't fled are thinking about it. Just over half of California’s registered vote have considered leaving the state, with soaring housing costs cited as the most common reason for wanting to move, according to a new poll.

Until the transcript of President Donald Trump’s call with Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky emerged on Wednesday, Democrats were in a mad fury with accusations that Trump had bribed a foreign government to investigate the business dealings of former Vice President Joe Biden’s son Hunter. The claim, based on a whistleblower’s second-hand account, which none of them had seen, alleged that Trump withheld aid to Ukraine on the condition that it open an investigation on Biden. Circumstantially at least, there seemed to be some crumbs to back this up. Aside from the mysterious whistleblower claim, the administration had

It's not just San Francisco that has a poop problem. The verdant banks and peaceful beaches of the Russian River are left littered with human waste after busy weekends of visitors partying on the water, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. "You're talking about orders of magnitude of fecal matter beyond wild animals," said Don McEnhill, executive director of RussianRiverkeeper, an organization that seeks to preserve the Russian River's natural beauty. The Press Democrat reports most of the waste is found near Petrified Forest Road, Porter Creek Road and Geysers Road and Steelhead Beach — where there is a public restroom.

Seems the mainstream media are desperate to keep President Trump's stellar United Nations speech out of the news. On Tuesday, Trump delivered a far from throwaway speech articulating the vision of the voters who elected him, speaking of nationalism, globalism, and socialism, along with an added rundown of problem nations to condemn and props for others. RealClearPolitics has a video and transcript. For starters, it was a zero apologies for America speech, which was a breath of fresh air, given the previous administration. He drove a fine definition of nationalism in the American sense, not other countries, as a positive thing that benefits not just the U.S., but all nations.

"This has nothing to do with politics or partisanship.” That was how House Speaker Nancy Pelosi put it shortly before announcing the opening of an official impeachment investigation into President Donald Trump. Who is she trying to kid? Despite the breathless commentary about Trump’s phone call with the Ukrainian president and a whistleblower report based on second-hand accounts of uncertain credibility, we know little about what transpired, much less whether it rises to the level of an impeachable offense. Democrats could have gone through the normal procedures to get the information from the White House rather than jump immediately to talk of impeachment.

If there's one thing Democrats have always wanted to get their hands on, it's workers' private retirement accounts -- the 401(k)s, the Roth IRAs, the Social Security checks. The idea of course, is that that big pot of stored savings can be spent now for leftist social programs instead of raising taxes and let what happens, happen, to people who've saved for retirement. We saw it in 2010, in the Democrats' effort to 'Argentinize' U.S. 401(k)s and replace them with a 'guaranteed retirement accounts,' using the private savings to bail out failing public pensions. It fell flat, but that didn't stop Democrats.

The great triumph of recent American politics is for the people of your fine country to have elected as president a man who is the precise embodiment of what supercilious Europeans think Americans are really like. Pig-ignorant, arrogant, jingoistic, contemptuous of foreigners, loud-mouthed, badly dressed and irredeemably bumptious. So consuming is the European antipathy toward Donald Trump — he’s never read a book! He eats steak with ketchup! — that it afflicts leading politicians across our continent, people who would be better advised to button it a while and show a little bit of diplomacy to the leader of the free world. But they can’t: the contempt always bleeds through.

MSNBC contributor Sam Stein asked House intelligence committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on September 17, nine days before the complaint was released to the public. "We have not spoken directly with the whistleblower," Schiff responded at the time, never mentioning that one of his committee staffers had directly spoken to the whistleblower -- and that the staffer "shared some of what the [whistleblower] conveyed" with Schiff, according to the New York Times. The New York Times says the staffer referred the whistleblower to a (Democrat-connected) attorney to help him file a formal complaint with the intelligence community inspector general.
