Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford on Sunday announced he will challenge Donald Trump for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in 2020, becoming the third member of his party to do so. Sanford, in an interview on “Fox News Sunday,” said he believes the GOP needs to have a conversation about what it means to be a Republican, adding: “We have lost our way.” The former governor, who was also a congressman from 1995 to 2001 and 2013 to 2019, highlighted in particular a need to discuss the country’s ballooning debt and deficits, as well as Trump’s turn toward trade protectionism. “One of the hallmarks of the Republican

Whenever a need "to have a conversation" is mentioned, my ears shut down, probably because it is so often used in relation to race, which is very much over-conversed. This time, however, it is in relation to motives. My ears still shut down.

If by 'losing our way' means we are no longer on the path to cultural suicide then I fail to see how this is a bad thing. If by 'losing our way' means we are no longer going to put the interests of other nations and multi-national corporations ahead of the American working class then I fail to see how this is a bad thing. If by 'losing our way' means we will no longer expend our blood and treasure on conflicts that do not advance the well being of the American nation then I fail to see how this is a bad thing. I guess Gov. Sanford would like us to continue down the path of national ruin by expending ourselves in pointless bloody pursuits overseas and ignoring the destruction of our national character at home. Maybe I am wrong. I would like Gov. Sanford to clearly articulate what is wrong, why he believes it is wrong, and how exactly he plans to correct it.

Wrong messenger. There are legitimate criticisms and concerns about the Trumpian takeover of what once was the only place for conservatives. It is more selective, however, than Sanford is able to criticize given his own misfeasance. A better choice would be someone who could lay out the case for free trade and for more circumspection in rhetoric and the use of tweets; while acknowledging the wisdom of our efforts to constrict Iran's widespread terrorism and the moving of our embassy to Jerusalem. As with any president, there is a mixed bag. A reasonable analysis will not, however, come from Sanford's candidacy.

Sanford should know by now that not everyone can successfully run for public office and should therefore find another line of work. He's one who cannot take the lesson. Romney, H. Clinton, Gore and Heb Bush are others who should have found another line of work. Apparently, the money to be made as a "public servant" is too great. The Department of Homeland Security is discarding a 1994 rule which says officials must provide work permits to asylum seekers within 30 days of their request. The tighter curbs on work permits may reduce the huge flow of low wage foreign migrants into U.S. blue collar jobs. In turn, the reduced inflow will pressure employers to offer Americans higher wages as they compete for the limited pool of U.S. workers Federal law allows illegal immigrants and economic migrants to ask for asylum — and then to ask for work permits once they have waited at least 150 days for an asylum court hearing.

During last week’s climate town halls, several Democratic presidential candidates endorsed a carbon tax. It’s an idea Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton shied away from. At Bloomberg Opinion, I argue they had good reasons for keeping their distance. A memo for the Clinton campaign estimated that a carbon tax of $42 per ton on greenhouse-gas emissions would raise annual energy costs by $478 for the average household, and by $268 for the poorest fifth of households. When considering that number, keep in mind another poll finding. In November 2018, the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research ran a survey about climate change that found, in line with other polls, that most Americans
