This is not the time to go all Marie Kondo, thanking those scuffed-up high heels and broken tennis rackets for the joy they’ve sparked, then donating them to the Bahamas recovery effort. Most immediately, Bahamians still stunned at the level of destruction left in Hurricane Dorian’s wake have very specific and urgent needs, listed below, outlined by their government. No matter how well-intentioned, South Floridians should resist the urge to use the disaster in the Bahamas to clean out their closets.

I understand what they are saying, but that is a pretty snotty headline.

Rather complicated for the average person to contribute some of the items listed. And some are expensive. That is why cash donations are often requested - so that needed items can be purchased and transported to the site.

Anyone who has been involved in a community garage/rummage sale knows that people will donate absolute junk. For those who have to weed through the garbage and then dispose of it - when they really need to be attending to the crisis, the reality is that this headline is spot on. Our parish actually quit the annual garage sale years ago for this very reason. In this case, a gift of cash will certainly be the most helpful.

Sure the Clintons have some used underwear they'll donate. Plus another great opportunity for the Clinton Foundation, considering all the fine work they did in Haiti.

Well, if I'm going to be lectured- guess I'll donate to someone less picky.

I agree the tone of the article was very snotty. It does not make me inclined to donate anything. I think I'll sit out trying to save the world this time.

The Bahamas are a British concern. Did they contribute towards Puerto Rico 2 yrs. ago? I doubt it. Why should we feel obligated to contribute? If you are so inclined, fine, but I will pass.

What too many of them need now is a decent burial. And their own government is unlikely to be able
to actually do this in any sort of a timely manner.

Because of Ad Blocker, I can't read the article. When the hurricane hit PR, tons of donated clothing and other items sat in storage in FL until it was unusable. People sometimes donated dirty clothes and expired food. One time I saw a can of salmon that was 10 years old.
Not that I like the Red Cross, but some of these agencies are better prepared to buy what is needed like diapers, formula, medical supplies in large quantities.

I couldn't get past ad block hysteria so couldn't read the list. What people will need most is food, water and clothes. When we had hurricanes when I was a kid, the schools would request students bring canned foods and clothes for the victims. Others would then bring the stuff in trucks. As for donating money, you have heard what George Clooney did collecting money for Haiti, right? He kept it. Legally he only needed to donate a minimal amount and the rest was his. He never showed an accounting of the money.I'd keep my money.
